Longhorn Football Attrition News - Calvin Howell
Reports surfacing on the eve of National Signing Day that Texas Longhorn defensive tackle Calvin Howell is electing to transfer. Howell was expected to contend for major reps this Spring and battle for a starting defensive tackle spot, replacing the departing Kheeston Randall. Good luck to Calvin wherever he chooses to strap it on again. Hook 'em.

Head Scratcher
He played in all 13 games last year and started a majority of them too. Must be something else, any ideas?

I’m wondering the same thing… Couldn’t find the reason.

From a personal level, this shocks me
I read recently where he was becoming one of the leaders at his positional area. And was in position to be an impact player.
On a playing level, DT might be the deepest area on the team. I was already wondering how we’d find enough snaps for Dorsey, Jackson, Whaley, Moore and Malcom Brown and possibly another of the freshmen — plus Howell.
I just sense there’s something deeper here. Best of luck to him; seemed like he really came alive the last few games of the season. I wonder if the “bench 400 pounds” dictum that Manny or Bo Davis wanted is a factor.
Agreed
Most be something deeper – team rule violations, recent arrest, academic casualty…Shocked by this news as well.

Odds that MBII comes in and competes for a starting spot??

He may get small playing time, but definitely won’t be starting.

It's expected that Moore
moves into Kheeston Randall’s vacated spot. The other spot is up for grabs but I would think it would be Dorsey. But Whaley or Jackson and maybe even MB2 could steal that spot. Other (smarter) people than I think MB2 won’t start so I would probably go with Dorsey.
Good info thanks
Should be a nice little competition

Yeah, I love the depth, even with Howell leaving.
Jackson really came on late in the year, should be fun to have our DTs rotating in and having fresh players terrorize QBs.
Absolutely

Supposed insider information
saying his locker has been cleaned out. Some have speculated violation of team rules. Others, grades. We’ll just refer back to the story link for now. No official word from Belmont at this time unless you count the ESPN leaker about as official as it gets.

How could it be grades when classes started two weeks ago?
Still sorry to see him go. Seemed like a good team guy, gave what he had, overcame a serious head injury/concussion issue his first year in the program.
Vs. McFiction McFarcland
He had been looking like the clear better prospect than that sack of crap at OU. I didn’t seen this coming and was really a fan of Howell. Dang it.
We're Texas, We're not OK.
Weird.
I don’t know what to think of this yet.. I have to think that Mack and Co. had a very good reason for giving him the boot if that is indeed what happened. Sad to see that he messed up somehow because he is obviously talented. If that isn’t what happened.. then jeez ha why would he want to go?!
Arrested it seems
SMPD blotter, January 29th, 2012:
4:44 a.m.- Possession of marijuana less than 2 oz., 1500 block Aquarena Springs drive, Calvin Trent Howell, 20, arrested.
