Sundays with Bill, Post All Star Game Edition
It was a rough Thursday and Friday night for Texas fans. On Thursday night, Connor Brewer got knocked out of the UA Game, and Johnathan Gray hopped off the field with an ankle injury. Mario Edwards and Malcom Brown looked great. On Friday night, Thomas Johnson decommitted, and that news was chased with Texas backing off JUCO QB Bo Wallace. Things got better on Saturday at the Army AA Bowl. Kendall Sanders pulled down a couple picks and a MVP trophy while Hassan Ridgeway flashed some big time potential. DGB was well DGB.
Talking points:
* The Thomas Johnson decommitment. What it means and who Texas is looking at for a replacement.
* The Bo Wallace story then non-story. It looks like Texas will dance with the ones that brung them.
* All Star Game whispers on DGB and Mario Edwards.
* 2013 FL Safety Marcell Harris visits Texas for the second time with an eye on a third visit.
* Kendall Sanders and Hassan Ridgeway represent.
* Johnathan Gray flashes his immense skills as a receiver, and Malcom Brown dominates the line of scrimmage.
* Finishing off the 2012 class, how Texas might finish.
* Looking forward to the 2013 class, Raulerson is the first confirmed Junior Day visitor.

So . . . What are you hearing about Wallace's
non-visit?
Was that his idea, or UT’s, or was there ever even a true plan for a visit?
I think Case staying effected Texas' decision to back off
I think Wallace will stay in state. There seems like a lot of pressure for him to go to Ole Miss or MS State.

So, we backed off?
Hate that. But I’m glad Case is staying.
Craig Way stated ...
eary last week that Case had made if very very clear to the coaches, et al, that he had every intension of staying. Way said this days before Case made his tweet.

Spring practices have not....
….come and gone yet. Case’s move has cost us Bo Wallace. Meanwhile, Case can change his mind in May. We’ll see how it goes after all the cards have been played.

Case’s move has cost us Bo Wallace.
I keep seeing this stated as though it were fact, when it’s guesswork at best.

If it were logical, you might be able to say that he MIGHT have cost UT Wallace
But as it is, it’s not logical, because Case reportedly told coaches well beforehand that he was not transferring. Even if that hadn’t been the case, you still would’ve been jumping to a conclusion, so here:

According to Jesus:
I was able to catch up with a couple of Big Cigars after the big win in the Holiday Bowl and got some interesting bits of information. First, we’ll start with what looks to be more attrition for this Texas team. The Big Cigar told me Case McCoy has told some folks inside the program along with teammates that he’s transferring. This isn’t exactly a revelation, but my sources say Case was telling various parties as early as Wednesday that he was indeed looking to get out. In talking to my Big Cigar here’s why.
Can we take either as gospel or the other as always wrong? So, we don’t really know what Case’s plans were before he tweeted or even after his tweet. So all I know, and I suspect all you know, on this subject is what was said by whom. We don’t know the truth. And we all have our opinions. And HC was simply stating an opinion, which was supported by some logic. Do we always have to say “IMO” here to express an opinion?

Ground Rules
I know many of us didn’t care for Thomas Johnson’s decision to decommit. I don’t want this forum to turn into a “Thomas Johnson sucks” thread. Johnson is 18 years old, he went about his decision in a less than ideal manner. Sure it hurts, but it’s time to move on.
I also don’t want this to turn into a “Case sucks” thread. The coaches made an unfortunate decision to not pursue Bo Wallace. Case looks to be a career back up at Texas. I’d rather have Bo Wallace, but there is some dignity and honor in Case’s decision to stay.

We are in need of WRs.....
….not so much the slot receivers. Oh, and we need some real TEs for Harsin’s offense. Personally, I hope T.Johnson finds the right program. If he felt he wasn’t going to be happy on the 40 Acres, then I hope he finds it elsewhere.
--- All roads to the Big-XII Championship lead through OU/RRS. It's not just another game! We're all about championships here. ---
I think we're fine at WR
Goodwin showed he can be a go to guy and we’ve still got Shipley aka Mr. Realiable. Onyebule and Harris were good when we went to them. Even if Davis leaves, we’ll have have 4 guys coming back who proved they can catch the ball and do something with it after the catch. And I think they’ll move either Kendall Sanders or Orlando Thomas to WR so we should be fine there with Jones coming in to be our big receiver. We have Marcus Johnson coming in as well. We’ve also got Terrell and Jackson coming back. They didn’t play much, but a year under their belts in the offense will certainly help.
As for Davis, I don’t think he will leave. He dropped the balls. He finished with 45 catches and it should have been 55 easily. Not to mention he would’ve gotten more balls thrown his way had he actually been catching the balls that were thrown to him late in the season. He’s our #1 guy and he will go into next season as our #1 guy, he has so much potential on the football field. Hopefully he stays and fulfills that potential as a Longhorn

All Star Game rumblings on DGB and Edwards
On DGB, the Texas coaches likely visited with him after the Army AA Bowl. I’ve heard different things on DGB from he’s made a decision to he’s wide open. Watch the official visits. DGB’s possible January 20th official visit to Arkansas is very much in the air.
On Edwards, Texas commits sound confident. Texas also didn’t make a push for Arik Armstead after he expressed interest in visiting Texas. That could be telling. FSU put the full court press on Edwards after the UA AA Game. Still waiting on his post all star comments.

Plus, we need to remember that kids de-commit and re-commit all the time. Martinez is likely leaving. Bringing him in and bringing TJ back to the TGOD would be awesome.

DGB is not going to tip his hand. Shutting down the official visits, maybe, is a good development for UT. I expect Texas will recruit DGB even harder now that Johnson decommitted.

Mack has been making his recruiting trips around the state this week and he came to my school to see a recruit. Using my journalist perks I got to spend some time with him, Major and Giles and really enjoyed the experience. All 3 really represent the program well and I even had some good conversations with them. IMO I’d love to see Mack stay another 2 or 3 years as HC, and what are your thoughts on Applewhite succeeding Mack when he retires?

Applewhite will not suceed Mack u don’t turn the keys to a Ferrari to a un experienced driver so Applewhite needs to be a head coach somewhere else before he gets that job some where eslse first!!!
Not only did Stoops take 0U as his 1st head coaching stint ...
… but that program was far from even a Ferrari when he took it – and it looks like he’s done a pretty dang good job there. Major taking over at UT would be that much easier because of the foundation that Mack has already laid. It’s okay for Major to take his first HC job at UT – as long as he’s got the moxie that we all hope he does.
Right, but Stoops was a much more accomplished coordinator...
…than Applewhite has been. Major had a good year at Rice, a horrible showing at ‘cuse, and then had the reins reportedly pulled away from him at Alabama. Now he’s a co OC without playcalling responsibility, so I question whether he’d be ready for such a job. Stoops at least had proven himself, no?

Also, you sometimes have to take chances when you have sucked for over a decade. Ou wasnt the Ou it is today. They would not take an unproven coach if Stoops left today. We would not take an unproved coach either. We are in a great situation. We would/will someday go after someone with HC experience.

Another strong point
A top-tier program with strong support, piles of cash, and a recruiting assembly line is going to go get the coach it wants. There are some who wouldn’t take the job, but generally the program will have as long a list of people wanting the job as any program in the country could.

Well, my point was only about the fact that many good coaches ...
… start as a head coach from the very 1st opportunity – and succeed greatly. That’s what point “… don’t turn the keys to a Ferrari…” was differing from. I didn’t say that I necessarily think Applewhite is the best candidate for a program as prestigious and consistent as Texas’ but it’s easy to see that he is definitely a worthy candidate as a favored son and accomplished coach. No use in trying to downplay his experiences working under a bad head coach (Syracuse) or a philosophically-opposed boring & offensively-challenged head coach (Saban) where he actually improved the offense by 4 ppg and was once voted as $EC offensive coordinator of the week.
Really?
“u don’t turn the keys to a Ferrari to a un experienced driver so Applewhite needs to be a head coach somewhere else before he gets that job some where eslse first!!!”
It continually surprises me how easily we pick up the company line & parrot it as gospel. I’m fully aware DeLoss stated the UT job requires previous head coaching experience but 18 months ago we had HEAD COACH IN WAITING WILL MUSCHAMP who had no previous head coaching experience. Never say never. The taste of eating those words can be extremely bitter
I guess you were trying to reply to nvlonghorn?
Sounds like you’re right in line with my point.
Major
By all acounts, is a fantastic person and an elite recruiter. I would like to see him coach Texas someday. I do think he needs to go outside of the program eventually and learn the head coaching ropes elsewhere first.
I love Manny Diaz. He’s the most important coordinator to retain. There’s some noise that Texas is committed to keeping Manny at Texas. His media skills are off the charts, so I think he could handle that aspect of the job.

I’m not going to accuse them of anything. There are some unflattering stories out there though. I’m not concerned with them pulling defensive players out of Texas, but I am concerned with them recruiting offensive skill position players in Texas. The Ducks offense is humming right now, while Texas at times struggled with their offense. I think it’s more of a reflection of how Oregon’s offense is performing than anything else.

I visited Eugene with my HS son two years ago . . .
It is VERY remote (2 hrs from Portland and a plane ride from anywhere else), and also very crunchy granola. My kid actually started out at Boulder, and the vibe in Eugene is very similar to CU.
If the proposition is that Texas kids are choosing Oregon simply because of their flashy offense and so-hideous-they’re-hip uniforms, color me skeptical. It’s one thing for California kids to make the trek up there, but a Dallas kid is looking at a two-hour drive plus an expensive 4-hour flight to get home.

and have always wondered about this subject. Why does nobody ever bring it up? Not that I have one clue about these recruits/students finances, but to go from Desoto, Daingerfield or Dallas to Eugene is one expensive trip! And I always see parents spotted at the games courtesy of TV crews, so they can afford that as well?? Call me skeptical about this travel to say the least.

MB will be in the 2 deep rotation
Too hard to think of a reason he won’t play. He already has the size and speed. Very good with his skill moves as well…especially for a HS player. Watch him…he will be special.
Not necessarily
There is a good chance he starts the year behind Jackson, Dorsey, Whaley, Howell, and even a more experienced newcomer in Moore. Not saying he won’t play or contribute heavily, but DT depth next year should be godlike. We will have third teamers who would start at many Big 12 schools.

Funny how quickly a position of weakness becomes a position of strength
This time last year, we were still talking who would step up with Kheeston Randall to fill the 2nd DT spot, and now we are talking about our 3rd teamers starting on other Big 12 teams.
Sure is nice
To have recruiters who work hard. Diaz’s multfaceted schemes and love for playing deep into his bench can’t go understated either.

Quincy Russell wants to to be at Texas in Spring 2013 if the Horns will have him. The Texas coaches have been staying in touch with this JC coaches. I think it’d be a good PR move to bring him back, but there are some nice options at DT in the 2013 class.

OK, TJ's gone. Who's left that has the skills to replace him?
Daje? Corey Coleman? Those are the names people are laying out but are they even in the same range as TJ?
TJ Replacements
I think Bralon Addison is only addition that could be viewed as an upgrade. That’s an uphill battle though. Wyatt is pretty darn busy recruiting DGB, Texas might go for the easy grab here. Daje Johnson fits that category.
by billfromlaketravis on Jan 8, 2012 5:33 PM CST up reply actions
To add to that
Addison would not be an instant upgrade at “wide receiver,” per se. Bill’s implying he has higher potential there due to improvisation ability with the ball in his hands. Addison will likely need some time to learn the WR position, progress that hasn’t been made recently in a lot of raw receiver talents to grace the 40. He is possibly the best player in the state, and possibly the country, with the ball in his hands though.
Follow me on Twitter @GoHornsGo90
I actually watched him in a few games, being from Houston myself
Hightower had a few variations of the wildcat formation whereby they threw to Addison. Trust me when I say he won’t have any problem adjusting to WR.

Is there possibly a rift that's developed within the coaches?
The mixed stories about the Wallace visit are strange. One says he was going to visit because coaches thought Case was leaving, then Case stayed put so they cancelled Bo. Another source says Bo never had an invite from us, he invited himself, and Case never thought about leaving. Maybe a difference of opinion within the coaches?
Add to that a couple of times at the end of they year when seemingly someone wanted to do a QB sub and someone overruled them.
by Nunna Yo Bizness on Jan 8, 2012 5:21 PM CST reply actions
Case
Do I think he looked around? Yes I do, and I don’t begrudge him for that. Ash started the Holiday Bowl, played every down and has 3 years of eligibility left. If he wants to be a starting QB, he was smart to look around. It feels like he accepted the back up role.
I don’t like the all in gamble on Ash. I think Wallace should have been brought in to compete with Ash.
I’ve never had a problem with Case at Texas as a CAREER BACK UP, and not a starter.
by billfromlaketravis on Jan 8, 2012 5:37 PM CST up reply actions
I'll never believe the rumors that Case was ever going to leave.
I do believe that it was just all wishful thinking on many of those here not associated with the program. It remains to be seen whether he is a career back-up or not. He’s shown as much or more productivity as Ash and has contributed big-time towards several of the Texas wins this past season. The only times he didn’t contribute was when he was forced to watch from the sideline as his QB competition did less.
Sorry, Bill. I know you didn’t want to get into this. Just irritates me that Case is viewed as worthless by some.
Case is not worthless, but I also don't think he's better than Ash.
He had one good scramble at A&M, and then completely fell apart against a horrible, horrible Baylor defense…the worth part of which is their secondary. Add that to his lack of arm strength and that Ash is more physically suited to running the option and I think the coaches saw more upside in Ash.
Case
You need career back ups. You need somebody with experience that can continue to run the offense in the event of an injury and close out blow outs.
by billfromlaketravis on Jan 8, 2012 6:39 PM CST up reply actions
I absolutely agree with that
I just think Ash is the better starter prospect at this point. But, here’s hoping BOTH can develop in Spring and Summer and give the kids coming in the luxury of time to grown both physically and mentally before seeing the field.
Agree with you Bill
But Disagree with robthecob. I have not really seen anyone saying Case is worthless. I have seen a lot of people unhappy with his transfer rumor.
I have been vocal that IF Case has become a distraction he must be removed. IF he is being supportive in his role as a backup competing to get the starting job back from Ash, I’m all for him and continue to wish him luck.
However, he simply cannot be allowed to stay if he is being a distraction. Wallace would have been an insurance policy. The only reason we didn’t take his visit had to be a firm commit from McCoy, so I for one consider it now settled that McCoy is comfortable as the backup and will work hard to win the starting job back. Bring it on. I hope that McCoy pushes Ash and that they are both starting QB material next year.
We're Texas, We're not OK.
I actually liked what I saw of McCoy on the sidelines in the Holiday Bowl
The 2nd half of that game would have been the perfect opportunity for McCoy to start sulking about his lack of playing time, but he was on the sidelines in the 4th quarter encouraging Ash and trying to keep the energy level high.
Seems apparent that the staff viewed Wallace as an insurance policy backup to Ash, should McCoy have transferred. It looks like they believe they can develop Ash into the QB they believe they need. If our OL and RB corps progress in the off-season, I think that’s probably true. But for better or worse, we’re all-in on Ash for 2012.
Please know that I really respect all you guys but it really amazes me that ...
… y’all ignore stats when comparing these two players. BOTH earned 5 starts from the coaches. Every passing statistic favors McCoy – many by far. As much as everyone likes to tout Ash’s rushing (103 yds total), he is not really a good graceful productive runner – only a durable guy (which he definitely seems to be) who puts his head down and barrells forward, almost always keeping the ball when he should pitch. He has, way more often than not, made the wrong read.
Y’all are going on A) size , B) passing form (neither is solid), C) potential (there’s that word!), D) uncontroversial personality (Did you know that Case is 1st-team academic all-Big 12*?), and E) siblings when favoring Ash. That’s it. RESULTS are certainly not considered. I don’t exactly know what happened vs. 0U – none of us does – but, IMO, Case’s competitiveness just got the best of him. Besides that one highly emotional day, he’s never shown that he is a “distraction” to the team. That’s just way beyond our ability to know or be spouted off as fact. For some to just say that he should be a good little soldier, hold the clipboard, and pat Ash on the butt – is crazy! Do you really want our players, regardless of age or position, to be happy they’re not getting playing time? Good gosh amighty! Don’t you value a competitive & fiery QB? He’s always going to be a good sideline supporter but I’d have a big problem with him if he wasn’t at least begging the coaches to start him or put him into the game after the many good things he did in ’11.
I guarantee you one thing. If Ash gets handed the keys to this thing and he knows that it’s solely his based on a coach’s decision for size & “potential” (over McCoy) – he will definitely fail. It’s what happened with Gilbert. That’s cultivating the exact sense of entitlement that everyone loathes while inaccurately espousing it in Case simply because he’s Colt’s little brother.
Don’t take this as a silly “McCoy is better than Ash” soapbox rant. I simply think that BOTH guys have earned playing time and frequent starts. It’s just makes no sense to ignore the production that McCoy provided in 2011. I appreciate the Matt Nordgrens of the world but it’s just flat silly to say that Case should accept a backup role – with 2 years left to go in his career. Go ask Applewhite how that whole thing turned out with Simms. Until one of ’em pulls ahead, UT can benefit in 2012 by both staying competitively tested and fresh in games.
I read very little of that
But Ash has a very good passing motion. Case’s is abysmal. Not sure where you got the alternate impression.
Follow me on Twitter @GoHornsGo90
My condolences on your reading ability.
Ash “very good”? No. Case “abysmal”? Strike 2. Both r OK but both still have a ways to go.

I just think its strange that we as Texas fans
would ever think of anyone as having an “unfair advantage.” dollar for dollar we can compete with anyone. Oregon does get special uniforms, but so does just about any other school that signs a deal with Nike (Texas could as well, but we don’t want or need it). Phil does donate money to the program, but there are plenty of donors on Texas’s side.

Oregon uniforms
I’ll submit that the Ducks agree to model Nike’s fashion show every week because they are a relative upstart as a program (at least compared to Texas). The Longhorn uniform is iconic, laden with tradition like the rest of the program. I applaud Oregon for taking a weakness and making it a strength (in terms of PR). But I, and I imagine a lot of other fans, would absolutely loath adopting their Uniform Of The Month Club / Nike Whore schtick.

Along the lines of what Old Horn says below, I can buy Nike down the street but I have to drive 35 miles to a friend’s house to watch the LHN football games. And I haven’t seen hardly any UT basketball this year, because of that. I don’t think the LHN is giving us ANY unfair advantage … yet.
Ridgeway
I’ve seen him compared to Aaron Lewis. I think his ceiling is much higher than that. He has the strength right now to make an impact at Texas. Needs coaching and some pass rushing moves. I think he can possibly be as good as Okafor.

Ridgeway
Strength: Brute strength, aggressiveness, moves very well for his size, disruptive.
Weaknesses: Lack of pass rushing moves, doesn’t read plays as well as I’d like. His first instinct is to get upfield and that will kill you against the run. Instincts need to get better.
I think Oscar Giles can fix the weaknesses.

Ended the year the best PAC team and proved it in Eugene. Cal seems to be on the upswing. USC is back. UCLA has only one way to go. Oregons road is going to get a lot harder
by codaxx on Jan 8, 2012 6:47 PM CST via mobile up reply actions
Quick note as A Pac-12er
I kind of feel that next year is USC’s last good chance at a BCS bowl for a while. Kiffykins proved he coach this year, as USC improved immensely from the early October to late November, the recruiting restrictions start this year and although they are pulling in high-quality talent, I question whether the simple lack of quantity begins to catch up with SC in 2013 and beyond (injuries, academics, legal issues, personal issues do happen afterall). Furthermore, the lack of scholarship opportunities is enabling other SC’s competitors to have an easier road to gaining more talent. UCLA and Mora have assembled a team of good recruiters who if given a full recruiting cycle should be able to easily pick up two or three players that would have usually gone to SC. Hence, my premise that next year is SC’s last good chance at BCS bowl for a while.
Isn't that what Slick Rick thought?
How did the declaring the monopoly is over thing work out for him? I’ve been a Pac10/12 guy for a long time and I can accept the fact that in the Pac there is SC then everyone else period. Losing the ships just means that everyone will have to contribute.
by SDG on Jan 8, 2012 8:46 PM CST up reply actions
A series of things
1) Slick Rick did that to get the fanbase motivated (maybe he should of been a promoter instead of coach)
2) Thusfar, SC has not felt the effect from sanctions, by 2013 they will be playing with 20 fewer football players than their competition. I have to believe that will have some effect, either with youthful mistakes or a lack talent (via injury) at one or two key positions.
3) SC will always be good as they will continue to get a limited supply of excellent talent (8 – 10 wins), but not be apart of the super elite to make a BCS bowl. Also, will SC have specialists on scholarship now, if not will special teams lose a game or two.
4) SC will lose both a proven quarterback (Barkley) and a top 3 college receiver (assuming he leaves as a junior), those two players keyed the offense this year (though, McNeal helped greatly). I think it will be hard to replace that talent with the sanctions in place.
5) UCLA, Cal, Oregon, and potentially ASU will all pick up a 4* player or two they usually would not have gotten. Meaning SC will be playing against tougher competition.
6) Again, I’m not saying they won’t be good, simply not BCS level (and personally, I believe the stories that the BCS bowl system is going to be altered to solely be responsible for the championship game, leaving the rest of the bowls to do their own thing).

He is what he is and there’s no real development period like an OL where he could possibly wash out.

I think Hawkins could go early. Everybody needs another OT. Moore could go early. His size is a huge need in the NFL.

I do not understand negotiating exit fees
Hold their feet to the fire to pay their contractual obligation. The fees were negotiated when the contract was signed-there is nothing to negotiate now: they pay their exit fee as stated.
I am a commercial litigator and the Big XII and other conferneces are setting very bad precedents for themselves by not enfocing the actual stated contractual exit fees. It should be absolutely non-negotiable.

I would assume that Brewer wouldn’t be super excited about having to compete with both Wallace and Ash for the majority of his career.
I really think it would be a good idea to get another QB in the program that can compete for the starting QB position the next 2 years while Brewer redshirts and gets prepared.

I think Texas was looking for depth, not a starter. Wallace wants to be a starter. Period. That’s a conflict also.

Kendall Sanders
Do you think Kendall Sanders will play CB at Texas, if we get any of the following:
DGB, Addison, Coleman, Daje Johnson, and/or Devonte Harris
6"1 natural corners don’t grow on trees. And we don’t have any taller corners in this class or the previous
Sanders
If Texas were to land DGB and Addison, I think Texas would have enough play makers on offense to move Kendall Sanders to offense.
There’s a need for a utility back and another slot WR. Addison kills 2 birds with one stone in my opinion.
Texas is communicating with Harris. It’s not serious, but they’re talking.

I was always on the Sanders to WR train
But he’s just filthy at CB as well. The kid is just a playmaker. He’s this year’s Quandre Diggs—sick player on offense and defense that the coaches didn’t want to recruit forever. Will turn out to be a star because he has a chip on his shoulder. Love kids like that.

Insanity
3-and-done OLs are pretty rare. The only two I can think of off of the top of my head are Tyron Smith and Andre Smith, both of whom were super highly-touted out of HS (top 10 nationally from what I recall).
There have been many, many more
Off the top of my head, Bryan Bulaga, Bruce Campbell, and Anthony Davis went in 2010, Smith and I believe a guy who went undrafted last year, and this year there are already Kalil, Reiff, two Stanford guys (a guard and a tackle), and I think one or two more. That’s just the last three years.
Granted, it’s not as common as RBs or corners, but it happens every year. That said, it’s ridiculous to say a lineman should play as a true frosh because he might only be there two seasons. A redshirt year is really important, and lots of those guys who went pro early actually did redshirt earlier in their college careers, so they were actually finishing their fourth seasons.

some confusion on your part
A redshirt year is really important, and lots of those guys who went pro early actually did redshirt earlier in their college careers, so they were actually finishing their fourth seasons.
I was talking about three and done players, which means guys who left after their true junior season. Kalil, Rieff, DeCastro, and Martin all redshirted, and I would say they certainly aren’t arguments against redshirting an offensive lineman.
I think there's just some confusion here
I am saying I agree with you. People are concerned about the very, very remote possibility that a guy will go pro after his third season, so they say to play him immediately, when in fact guys turning pro early as OL usually only do so after a redshirt year plus three seasons of play.

Bergeron and LBs
How much do you think he can contribute next year? Will he stay at RB or move to FB? And how do you see our LBs shaking out next year? Who gets in the rotation outside of Cobbs and Hicks
Bergeron
I think Bergeron will be a big factor in the offense. I think Brown will get the most carries, followed by Gray, but Bergeron will carry the rock plenty. I think Texas probably wants to be around 40 carries a game next year. Must keep Ash at or under 25 attempts. I think Bergeron will work at TB, FB, and H Back next year.

Our O-Line was night and day better this year than last. I am sold on Searles development ability. And we have never lacked in talent, just development.
I think it was a clear improvement, but I'm not in love yet
Time will tell. He didn’t get the greatest results before coming to Texas, but at the risk of dancing on a loyal former coach’s career’s grave, Searels wouldn’t have to accomplish a whole lot to achieve an improvement over the Mac OLs.

He was just a boy thrust into a man’s world. And then, for god’s sake, he was asked to lead the University of Texas football team to greatness.
What the problem with UT fans was – we expected him to be some kind of phenom that could overcome all this newness and pressure and play mistake free and as a mature and experienced QB. This was unrealistic and unfair to him.

Pac 12 - Big Ten partnership
I really like the move. It’ll make scheduling marquee OOC games much easier. I wish the Big 12 had struck first and partnered with the BIg Ten to lock up the Midwest. From a competition stand point, it’s also a very smart move. California speed vs. kids from the Rust Belt, advantage Pac 12.

We should invite ourselves to the party and make it a 3 way alliance of Big 10, Pac 12, and Big XII. We should not have let that party start without us.
We're Texas, We're not OK.
Partnerships
I think the Big 12’s recent uncertainty probably factored into this. The conference could have serious TV contract issues if it’s unable to add WVU for the 2012 season.

DGB
Is a great young man. I read a story about DGB at Army AA Bowl. He was signing autographs after the game, and a child came up to him without anything to sign. DGB took off his shoe and signed it for the child. He kept signing autographs with one shoe.
He’s a tremendous young man. He can do big things on and off the field.

He’s a guy Mack can point to and say this is how you’re supposed to conduct yourself on and off the field.
Yes the legend grows. He healed a beggar while in NYC.

I believe he can
A good WR makes your QB look much better. DGB is elite at adjusting to the ball in the air. As long as Ash doesn’t badly overthrow him, he’ll go get it.
by billfromlaketravis on Jan 8, 2012 8:35 PM CST up reply actions
Exactly. If Mike Davis had done a better job of this not to mention catching it could have made a huge difference.
by Nunna Yo Bizness on Jan 8, 2012 8:36 PM CST up reply actions
Ash hit him dead on at least 2 times that were dropped
So, maybe Davis needs more of a challenge.
Our O-Line and WR’s were actually more troubling than our actual QB play. A true freshman won the Holiday Bowl. That is amazing, and still Ash gets no respect or not enough respect. He has amazing potential.
We're Texas, We're not OK.
At this point, I'd take Mike Davis playing with some fire
by billfromlaketravis on Jan 8, 2012 8:39 PM CST up reply actions
WRs finishing a play.
The all star games had some interesting camera angles with all that on the field stuff. But, I found it really interesting because I noticed the WRs would not block or do sh** if they weren’t the one that got the ball. Maybe it was the all star game not being that important, but they just stopped and looked for the next play even while their fellow WR was fighting for his life to get some YAC. It wasn’t just one WR, it was most of them.
We're Texas, We're not OK.
WR blocking is huge in the new offense
If WRs are unable or unwilling to do it, there’s a nice warm spot on the bench for them.

DGB just what the Dr. ordered
Defenses will continue to play single coverage on the outside and move their safeties up into run support until Ash proves he can exploit that. My sense is that DGB would win more than his share of jump balls with a 6’ CB.

The Shipley factor
A lot has been made of Texas’ QB play possibly effecting DGB’s decision. Well think about this, Jaxon takes a lot of pressure off of DGB. Dorial won’t be asked to be the savior as a freshman. Sure he’ll be asked to contribute, but Shipley will see a lot of single coverage with DGB on the other side.
by billfromlaketravis on Jan 8, 2012 8:45 PM CST up reply actions
One thing I like about DGBs decision making is.....
he seems like a really level headed and smart kid. He seems to understand it’s not about flashy unis and promises of this and that. He seems to be looking at all the right factors including quality of the school and education. I like our chances based on the kind of kid he and where he has his priorities.

Recruiting
With UT going to WV in the near future, at least every other year, can you see Mack starting to recruit PA, Ohio, or even Illinios more.
Along that line, are you worried Alabama and L$U come to TX, thanks to aTm, and start looking for doors to recruit
LSU is already in the state...
Bama already grabs 1 or 2 each year and I expect that to increase a bit maybe to 3-4, Florida may be making in road into the state because of Muschamp’s connections here, while I don’t think it’ll be much different for us I can imagine that its about to get harder for A&M TCU Baylor and Tech…

Rust Belt Recruting
No I don’t see Texas recruiting those areas. The coaching staff don’t have ties to the area. Now could Texas’ increased exposure on that area lead to some recruits contacting Texas? Certainly, I could see that happen. Noah Spence is from Harrisburg, PA and expressed interest in Texas earlier in the recruiting cycle.
LSU is always going to be player in East Texas. Additionally, they’ll be a player for former Louisianans living in Texas. 2013 Bishop Dunne OT Ishmael Wilson certainly falls into that category.
I think Bama will take a few recruits out of the state of Texas. Georgia, Florida, Mississippi and Alabama is there bread and butter.

Obviously the main factor in his recruitment is proximity to home. Arkansas is 3 hours from Springfield yet he still keeps Texas in his top schools…obviously he’s smitten with us. His family wants him to do what he wants regardless of how close to home he is. I think, in the end, he decides to come to Texas because it’s what he really wants.

Like I said ... I hate the hat game.
I will change my legal name to "I. M. Harsin" if Texas scores on a Statue of Liberty or Hook-and-Ladder vs. OU."

Folks, in case you missed it
J. Gray will be a lock All American and a serious candidate for the Heisman. I said it here first!
He,,,can…catch…a…damned…football and he is faaaaassssttttt!!!!!!
Proud of your offense? Manny badger don't give a shit!
Harsin will not take a HC position as long as Gray stays at UT - book it!
Proud of your offense? Manny badger don't give a shit!
Bill, how is the 2014 class looking - where is the strength of that class?
Proud of your offense? Manny badger don't give a shit!
Wow it's early
Skyline CB Ced Collins, Brenham OT Austin Schlottmann, Rockdale LB James Daivd, and North Shore LB Zachary Whitley headline the class.
North Shore is LOADED in 2014. The 2014 class should be loaded on the defensive side.

Ah, Northshore - it just seems they have multitudes of D1 players every year - a UT pipeline!
Proud of your offense? Manny badger don't give a shit!
Bo Davis coached there
And yes it is considered a pipeline school.

LB/DE Hoza Scott is a freak of nature at La Porte
Solomon Thomas from Coppell is supposed to be the top DE in the state, so far. Talk about Collins being the top DB in the country, but it’s way to early for that most likely.

Spot on
Texas will be after Soloman Thomas HARD. He’ll get the full court press.

Hoza Scott
Is already a man out there and just a soph. Heard that A&M already has an impending offer out there for him.

Yeah Derek and James David are brothers
James is said to be a really good kid though. No character or grade issues to speak of so far.

great
they’re in West Brook’s district. Glad I’m graduating this year while we still had a chance to win some.

Also, what have you heard of the rumor that Fozzie may look at coaching?
Proud of your offense? Manny badger don't give a shit!
What a shame this kid didn't another couple years with Harsin. He was so misused in GDs system.
I don’t know if he has NFL potential now but a couple more years like this one and he would have. What a gread team leader. After all he’d been through in his career he could have been one of the bad attitude entitled type. Instead he bought in and made the most of this year’s opportunities. I wish hiim the best.

I haven't heard that, I'm sure he'd be welcome at Texas a GA
I think he’s looking at a 16 month + recovery from his injury.

I knew him from Pearland
There is nothing false or put on about him. He is the sincere kid man that you see. You would be proud to have your kids be like him.

Watching the Saints game last night and how effectively they used Sproles,
made me really happy that the offensive coaches are visiting them this year. Do you think we’ll see more screens to counter the pressure the defenses are surely going to try to put on Ash?
Gray is the most logical candidate
I don’t think DJ has the hands.

OK thx. I know Ash isn't Brees and Gray isn't Sproles, but one can dream.
I think Gray can be a big contributor right away, but I hope I"m not just buzzing on the Kool-Aid.
Interesting tweet from Jinkins

If Searels and Wylie can turn our O line into strong blockers by September, Ash and the RBs will be stars....if not, we will lose to
OU
KSU
TCU
WVU and
maybe Baylor
I'd kill for a Nobel Peace Prize

not Baylor...
w/o Kwright and RG3

daje johnson
When were we suppose to offer daje an offer? Hopefully ash can complete 60 % of his passes or don’t under throw wider open wrs and we could be in good shape.
There's a dead period starting tomorrow through Thursday
I think Texas could start reaching out to candidates by Friday

Per twitter, UT seems disinterested in Coleman - Cal giving him the most love
