A lot of people are excited about the win over Tech and the success of the offense against their nationally ranked defense. While I was also excited, please do not use it as a good guage of the future. Tech's #1 nationally ranked run defense was based upon their success against Northwestern State, Texas State, New Mexico and Iowa State. While they only gave up 380 yards total offense to Oklahoma, which was a lot better than our performance, they did give up 408 yards to West Virginai and 426 yards to Kansas State. My point is not that our defense is better, but that their defense was overrated after four games and helped justify their ranking. Yes, they held stopped WV in Lubbock by stopping them on 4th down (converted 2 of 7) versus the grandiouse success versus the Longhorns the week prior. I question whether WV was a little flat after their win over us, but I digress.
Last year, Tech couldn't have stopped Jonathan Gray's Aledo offense as evidenced by UT rushing for 439 yards for an 8.1 per yard average with Bergeron going wild on his excessive 29 carries. This year Tech "held" the horns to 163 yards and 4.2yards per carry by over emphasizing the run stop and filling the box, which led to the Magic in the passing game. Improved defense, yes, but I expected some success based on last year
Tech's defense, which has improved with a new coordinator, but the success against Tech's defense does not translate into success against a tough front 7 for Iowas State or running success in our remaining games as demonstrated by last years follow-up to Tech being only 76 yards against Mizzouri. Iowa State is only giving up 141 yards, but has done it against Tulsa, Iowa, Western Ill, Tech, TCU, Kansas St. and Oklahoma St. Welcome back MB!
