Around SBN: Indy 500: Coverage of the 'Greatest Spectacle In Racing'

The late surge from the Longhorns to finish out the 2012 class, including the commitment from Louisiana's Torshiro Davis, wasn't enough to vault Texas past Nick Saban and his rolling Tide. Click through the link to find out just how close Texas came.

Disparity

A quick glance at the numbers shows a pretty wide gap for FSU and Georgia in how the 247-ESPN ratings finished vs. Scout-Rivals. Did not see that much of a gap with the other teams. Care to speculate on why the difference in ratings?

Scout vs 247

Scout takes a grand total with each player adding points and most points win, typically the more players a team signs the better chance they have to win…

247 (click on the info button at the top next to “football teams rankings”) uses a formula that puts emphasis on the highest average of total players signed, so typically the team with the best average of quality players will win…

Also each site calculates different rating and not just stars, for example ESPN assigns numerical grades to players which makes some five stars better than others, for example ESPN gives Mario Edwards a 90 and Jon Gray an 86 despite them both being five stars which it uses for its rankings, while Scout uses the star ranking combined with the players overall national ranking for that position, not to mention a player may be a 5 star on one service and just a 4 star on another…

Hope that helps…

Unless...

…they’re giving out a crystal trophy for winning the recruiting title, I’m not bent out of shape that the Horns’ class was judged second to ’Bama’s. I wouldn’t trade classes with the Tide, FSU, or anybody else.

also

it seems that espn is still showing us with 24 recruits with only 9 in the ESPN150 (on their class ranking page), when the ESPN page for Texas shows that we have 28 with 12 from the 150 – don’t know if that figured into their calculations or not.

Interesting point, and also note that they only list 26 for Alabama, when there were apparently 27

Are they just slow to update?

Honestly...

whether we finished 1st or 3rd, it really is pretty meaningless…we addressed all of our major needs BIG TIME! Yes, we need TE, but most TE’s are created, not recruited (usually). Im just happy that Mack has finally realized that the JUCO route is nothing to be ashamed of. Ask Auburn! You’ve got to think those JUCO guys are being brought in to start, right???

Agreed on how meaningless it is

Address the needs with some great talent, and it doesn’t matter whether the class is ranked first, fifth, or fifteenth. What matters is what the coaches and the players themselves do with all that potential. Many recruiting busts are the result of poor development, not completely blown evaluations by all recruiting services and the schools who offer.

Plus other forms of attrition

Such as career-ending or career-stunting injuries, academic failures, those who decide they don’t like the program, and those who trade their burnt orange uniforms for bright orange jumpsuits. Am I leaving anything out? It is great to know we have an especially deep class, but still the stars have to properly align for it to work out well. I can’t get too excited now as it could mean big disappointment later. I’ll be more interested when spring training ends to see how we’re shaping up, and maybe then we will be pleasantly surprised that some low-star guys have suddenly matured or become bigger and stronger and can play better than past four-star recruits at other schools.

Don't care, don't care, don't care, don't care.

Just keep describing our new O-lineman as “mean” and “nasty” and our new WR’s and DB’s as having record-setting speed. And win some goddam games. Lots of them.

We're going to play like we're in a bad mood.
