What's the deal with Morgan?

If he commits to Arky, we really need to land RSJ and Smythe.

C’MON JAMES! Pull the trigger.

Certainly a fan favorite, the coaches don't feel the same

Think the coaches made a mistake w/ Morgan

He should have had a JD invite just based on his rankings alone…and it’s not like there are a ton of quality TEs just lying around that we can ignore kids like him. Slow play doesn’t mean to completely ignore…

I'm wondering whether the interest is there on Morgan's side

I’m not accusing you of this, but there’s been a lot of criticism of the staff at times for supposedly recruiting by the rankings instead of doing in-depth evaluations. I’m not convinced the staff ever did that. But would you really want the staff to make recruiting decisions based on recruiting rankings? I wouldn’t, although the prevailing opinion on Morgan is that he’s a quality guy who should be in the crosshairs, and I’m in no position to disagree.

GOBR and BFLT, do you guys know whether he received an invitation to either JD and just declined, or simply hasn’t been courted in the JD phase?

Have u seen his JD schedule?

If going to UNT’s, I’m pretty sure he’d go to Austin if invited, and with the most in depth recruiting sites out of all FBS programs I think we would have found out if he was offered. And what I put up there wasn’t necessarily a critisicism of the staff, it was just an opinion.

Good blocking TE in Morgan

But I’m wondering who else is in the mix.

What about DeSean Smith? Or get in the mix for Breneman?

How about Dylan Chmura?

If nothing else, he has the bloodlines to play football and throw wicked hot tub parties.

2 More on JD2

2 are coming in on 25th, J. Gaines (Red Oak) and Trent Gow (Mansfield). Heard Gaines is possibly WR option. Gow on the other hand is end of line TE who catches well but is a freaking monster on the edge, from what I saw on YouTube. Maybe there looking for and end of LOS type guy to go along with Smythe.

No Kent Perkins today.

Not sure of the reason, but it’s certainly disappointing and he was one of the more likely kids to pull the trigger early. Right now, I wouldn’t be shocked if there aren’t any commitments today.

Yeah but realmccoy says this is a bad omen.

because if you don’t commit to Texas on February 12, 2012…then the chances of us signing him must drop drastically. Sheesh. Talk about a knee jerk reaction.

by Dagga Roosta on Feb 12, 2012 2:14 PM CST up reply actions

This could be working in our favor guys.

It’s not as exciting as Junior days in the past, but having so few commitments this early, leaves room for re-evaluation and gives us a chance to hold onto those extra scholarships for quality players.

by Hippie Killer on Feb 12, 2012 12:30 PM CST reply actions

True

But I also kind of like having at least a solid core class so we do not have to scramble for guys at the last minute if we lose some key recruits (like we had a good class this year so DGB was not as crucial).

by HookemHouston on Feb 12, 2012 12:36 PM CST up reply actions

Definitely

It’s a different vibe, but it’s for the best since as of right now, it’ll have to be a smaller class. Want to emphasize quality over quantity when numbers are smaller. With that said, any attrition this offseason will help us increase the class size. So, it’ll be something to watch

by Wrangler86 on Feb 12, 2012 2:24 PM CST up reply actions

And A&M's lack of quality quarterbacks and defensive backs

will play no role in the outcome, I’m sure.

Florida folks aren’t sold on Muschamp yet but I don’t think they understand how Meyer’s crappy/unfortunate recruiting in the late Tebow years was bound to leave his successor in a hole. Personnel-wise, Florida’s in the same spot that we’ve been in, and without the benefit of Duane Akina. You just don’t fix that overnight.

by Dagga Roosta on Feb 12, 2012 2:33 PM CST up reply actions

Yes, I would definitely put money on that

Florida was atrocious last year. Unless getting rid of Weis massively upgrades their offense, it wouldn’t surprise me if they barely make a bowl game or even have a losing season.

TEXAS FIGHT

by Darklust on Feb 12, 2012 3:44 PM CST up reply actions

Getting rid of Brantley

will help. He was Florida’s Gilbert. With an offseason of work Jacoby Brissett should be an upgrade.

And I think you underestimate how much bringing in a new QB and a new offense will hurt A&M’s chances in the second game of the season. Florida will be in the same boat but at least they’ve got some real NFL-caliber talent in the defensive front seven. From a betting standpoint I wouldn’t touch that game with a ten-foot pole. Unless it was a cattle prod.

by Dagga Roosta on Feb 12, 2012 4:11 PM CST up reply actions

I really think it takes time sometimes, especially with a real system turnover

Meyer left an undisciplined mess with some great talent, but mostly stacked at a select few positions, and not very good translatability to a conventional offense. It’s a tough job undoing all that in one shortened off-season.

Not trying to be critical, guys

But there’s a lot of Nervous Nellies out there.

There’s, like, 11 1/2 months until signing day. Today’s commitment to Arkansas or A&M is tomorrow’s target for our assistant coaches. If it’s somebody we want, we still have as much to offer as anybody, more than most, and we learned over the last six months that the staff doesn’t hang the hammock after April 15.

These guys keep recuiting. They keep talking, keep working, keep contacting — and we get what we got from November through Feb. 1 — a pile of late commitments. Those count the same as commitments made last week.

Yup

Former players are technically boosters for the program, and boosters can only contact prospective athletes if they have a friendship with their family that pre-dates the athlete’s prospective status.

And besides, I think Swoopes is plenty aware of VY’s greatness. He would’ve been eight or nine back in 2006, and that’s a formative age for football fans. Once you’ve been in a backyard game and proclaimed “I’m unna be Player X” to your friends…well, you can figure it out.

Quick question for GoBR, or whoever

Isn’t Hicks and Wilson a bit redundant, especially now with Daje Johnson in the fold? All three seem to have very similar Ramonce-ish skill sets.

by Dagga Roosta on Feb 12, 2012 4:14 PM CST reply actions

Very hard to tackle

for a kid his size. One of those kids who’s constantly adjusting his footwork and balance so defenders can’t get a bead on him. I love the take, I just wonder if we need three of those guys in two years.

by Dagga Roosta on Feb 12, 2012 4:48 PM CST up reply actions

That's why I'm wondering about Wilson

maybe he isn’t a Texas lock or lean like we thought?

by STLaw on Feb 12, 2012 4:51 PM CST up reply actions

confused

I thought wilson was oregon lean. I never heared him being a Texas lock. Am I mistaken?

by codaxx on Feb 12, 2012 5:41 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

That's correct

I’m not sure that Texas has ever been in a great spot with Wilson, but they certainly haven’t been recently.

Was talking about the pipeline and some "statements" made before

Some people had talked about how Texas would have the DeSoto “in” and also be able to sell themselves to Wilson pretty easily. Statements are just statements but a pipeline usually doesn’t go against a school I thought…

by STLaw on Feb 12, 2012 7:14 PM CST up reply actions

Texas did have great relationship with Claude Mathis,

who moved to DeSoto from Austin LBJ a few years ago. There’s no question that the strong ties there helped bring kids to Texas. But Wilson just hasn’t been that high on Texas in his public statements. Would hazard to guess that Mathis isn’t steering kids to Texas and in the case of Wilson, the thought is that there are other people around him who believe that Oregon is a better fit. And those people could very well be saying that with sincerity. I’ve been saying this a lot, but I don’t think that I would disagree with them or imply that they aren’t looking out for his best interests. As hard as it is for some diehard Texas recruitniks to realize, the school isn’t always the best fit for every kid and that’s just a reality rather than something that needs to be bemoaned to any great degree. (Not implying that you are one of those people either, by the way.)

by HookemHouston on Feb 12, 2012 7:29 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

I completely agree with you

Especially on Oregon fitting him better. There’s no denying that their offense would fit Wilson’s skills perfectly. I also think he realizes that he would be running into a big logjam on the depth chart at Texas.

I didn’t realize that Mathis and Texas didn’t have a good relationship though. Could explain the die down in DeSoto kids to Texas or highly interested in Texas. Thanks for the new piece of info.

by STLaw on Feb 12, 2012 7:39 PM CST up reply actions

No, Texas has a great relationship with Mathis.

He just moved on Texas to coach running backs there, though there were reports yesterday that he left and may be headed back to DeSoto. Not sure if that is official yet. Relationship is still strong, just spoke of it in the past tense because he had left.

Some thought out there

that the Texas coaches are pushing less for commitments on the spot and recommending to kids that they go home and talk about the decision with their family. If so, that’s a bit of a change in strategy and could result in several pledges over the next few days.

by TowerPower on Feb 12, 2012 7:43 PM CST up reply actions

I don't think it has to do with de-commitments

It’s two words. Well, 2 1/2 words.

We’re . . . Texas

With the exception of tight end, we’re BLANKING loaded. At least if our staff has done its due dilligence in the signing classes of 2011 and 2012. Other than TE, we don’t NEED anything now.

Other than the one thing we always need. Word starts with “Q” and ends with “Y”. Synonoym would be STUD. We only need quality studs, and at age 16 with almost three HS semesters and a spring training and a full season in the future, what’s the BLANKING rush?

Obviously, we made some offers this weekend. We’ll get some “yesses” right quick.

As to the rest . . . We like you now and you’re still good in nine months, we offer. We like you now and you’re not so hot in nine months, we’ve avoided the kinds of mistakes the staff made from 2006-2010. We’re not sure on you now but we like you in nine months. See Johnson, Daje . . . Santos, Dalton . . . Sanders, Kendall.

Etc.

by edsp on Feb 12, 2012 7:59 PM CST up reply actions

Much wisdom in here.

But as a fan, I’m greedy as hell.

by Hippie Killer on Feb 12, 2012 8:20 PM CST up reply actions

sorta like those guys

but a major reason Daje, Dalton, and Kendall were so late is because the new staff couldn’t review as many recruits in the smaller amount of time they had. Thus, they missed some players who they might have gone after sooner.

Though I do agree that Texas has pulled the trigger too quickly on some of the guys the passed couple of years and this might be a combination of trying to avoid that, and also the new staff feeling that because they are still relatively new as a group, they want to take things slightly slower and make sure they are on the same page. I think Mac really wants to get things set right, all of us are tired of loosing games.

by Brkroger on Feb 12, 2012 8:24 PM CST up reply actions

I also think Texas is taking their time, being careful with their evals

Texas had some big misses in 2012, that were luckily corrected later. The staff doesn’t want to make the same mistakes again.

Additionally, I think the defensive class is going to be smaller than many of us anticipated. It feels like an offensive heavy class.

Mack's Press Conference on National Signing Day

During his press conference, Mack talked about not wanting kids to make decisions when they’re all excited and caught up in the moment. He indicated he’d prefer the student go home and talk to his parents, and that Mack would call him on Tuesday following a visit.

He was speaking more about the late in the process visits, but my guess is that the coaching staff is generally following a “we don’t need to rush, we just need to get it right” approach.

Estelle

I thought he went to Dawson… And Erlich is pretty good. But I’m just saying, Texas hasn’t recruited a lot of guys from pearland lately! I also know Miles Kanipes was pretty good but he got busted several times – Ramonce style – I believe. Not taking anything away from Pearland, they beat the hell out of us and they’re real good. I guess Texas just isn’t constantly recruiting the Pearland area as much as they are in some of the other places in state. All in all, should’ve thought that out a little more, but Erlich, Fozzy, and Garrison were the only guys I remembered going. So as you have pointed out, many more than I remembered! Thank you.
