Quick ? About the JUCO Guys...?

Hey fellas,

Like many of you, I am fired up about this recruiting class. I really feel like this class could be special. I loved seeing that Mack was not afraid to finally enter the JUCO ranks. That said, what do you guys think (know) about the JUCO offensive and defensive linemen? I don't see Mack signing these kids unless he KNOWS they will play immediately. I know that Coach Davis wants some hogmollys in the trenches and I believe the DT is 6'6'' 335 lbs!?! Your thoughts? Hook em!!!

Both should start

Hawkins is already penciled in as our right tackle.

If the other guy doesn’t start he will surely be part of a rotation.

I hope this opens up our recruiting more as we tend to get holes at a position every once in a while. We need a great TE and I hope we can find someone ready in theJUco ranks next year.

I hope the assumptions are correct about Hawkins

I’m not sure if this has been mentioned before, but Hawkins doesn’t appear to have been ranked among the top OT’s for the 2010 recruiting class, but Rivals did list that he had offers from Georgia, Mississippi State, and Southern Miss out of high school. It’s unclear whether those were official offers or not, because I did find articles that said that MSU was waiting for a Hawkins to have a qualifying ACT score before they would give him an official offer. Anyway, if the Georgia thing is true, then Searels knows Hawkins from when he was a HS kid.

I don't think what he did in High School

is even relevant anymore.

Dude was good enough to get a scholarship offer from Oklahoma State and that is a pretty decent school to be a part of if you are going to be an OL.

I'm not sure you caught the point of my mention of his HS offer list

The point was that he was offered by Georgia, whose offensive line was then coached by one Stacy Searels, indicating that Searels has been watching Hawkins for a really long time.

Anyway, I do hope the assumptions are correct, because it’s not necessarily a given that a guy will make an immediate and smooth transition from juco to this level of football.

Hawkins is the biggest catch of the 2 JUCOs

He comes in ready to play with good technique. He has the size to play OT already and Wylie is conditioning him already. Can’t remember who said it but Hawkins has lost a few pounds already which is good. He has the size to afford losing a few pounds while increasing his athleticism and conditioning. Really glad we went after him.

I love the Hawkins grab

Beyond it being a critical need position, he seems to be one of those late bloomers. I’m like Burnt . . . I looked all over for Hawkins’ pedigree leaving high school, and had less success than Burnt did. I worry some about the quality of player Hawkins will be blocking come September, but he’ll have spent March and August trading licks with Dorsey, Jackson, Whaley, Moore, Okafor and Ced Reed, and that should give us (and the coaches) some idea how he’ll fare against Big 12 D-lines.

Moore — I’m a lot more reserved here. Can’t imagine he can be an instant starter for us when Saban let him go just last April or May. Certainly, the year in JC gave him a chance to scrape off the rust of not playing at all in 2009 and playing limited snaps in 2010 at Bama. But if he wasn’t Alabama good last spring, I worry he won’t be Texas good come September. Brandon: Please surprise me!

Still . . . love the change in recruiting philosophy. I view these two as replacements for recruiting flubs made by the old staff in 2008, 2009.

People continue to develop after high school.

Maybe he wasn’t highly recruited out of HS, but it seems to me he was pretty highly recruited out of the JUCO ranks.

This is probably a guy who was a late bloomer and is still on an upward slope of development.

Looking at a JUCO’s High School career is like looking at a High School players, middle school career.

It’s apples and oranges man, IMO.

I think Moore

is expected to slot into Randall’s vacated spot. I think he needs to trim down a bit though.

I wonder

what exactly we grabbed him for. Randall had a solid year but he’s not really the kind of DT Diaz wants. I’m not sure why we wanted another big Nose with experience in a 2-gap system.
Maybe Diaz likes to mix in 2-gap techniques from his nose, I’m not sure. But I do know that he stunts A LOT and you need speed and quick hands for that, not power.

i think...

Moore is going to be a space eater type guy. Coach Bo wants strength on the interior of the defensive line and Im guessing at 335lbs, he might be strong. I agree tho that he is only going to be a situational DT because of the stunting and dropping to coverage, ect. From what it looks like, Dorsey should be much stronger going into next season and with MB2 in there, this d line is pretty deep.

I wondered the same thing

I agree with AC…I think he is a situational use only.

the way I see it...

with losing kheeston and calvin howell transferring…this kid has got to be considered for some serious playing time immediately right? i mean, dorsey looked good at times but appears to not have that killer motor. Jackson sounds like he’s going to be a beast but until he proves himself, he’s just a workout warrior. i just think mack would not even THINK about taking a kid out of JC if he did not think he would contribute immediately

January?

Are these already in school? We’ve got 28 signees, but are only allowed 25 for September?

by bu2 on Feb 2, 2012 4:46 PM CST reply actions

Yes, JUCO

guys already signed and are practicing.

by 40A on Feb 2, 2012 4:56 PM CST up reply actions

rules rules rules...

there are certain loopholes that can increase the number to over 25 with transfers, early grads, NFLers, ect…mack daddy explained it pretty well yesterday in his press conf

by ACnDaHorns on Feb 2, 2012 4:54 PM CST reply actions

Mack explained that . . .

It’s 25 “each year” but January enrollees may be assigned to the previous year’s count . . . three were, since we took just 22 last year. So, 25 each year.

We actually have six of the 28 in school — the two JC players and four who were early HS grads.

Under this math, I believe we’d be capped at 25 next year. Not that we can get another 25 under the 85-limit, so moot point.

by edsp on Feb 2, 2012 4:55 PM CST reply actions

The numbers should be interesting next year

I’m thinking lower numbers with hard evals to make sure every offer counts. No low hanging fruit unless they are studs and we need them.

Like the turn around of offer before a visit….I really think it will get us in the hunt for OOS more often.
