Big XII ready to move toward hiring a permanent Commish
D. Ubben reporting Neinas is leaving by July 1
OK. What is the chance that Dan Beebe is hired back now that the whiner aggies and mizzou are gone? Well, what is the chance that Aggie AD Bill Byrne is hired?
Those are the two folks that I can think of now that Mike Leach has a job at Washington State. Dr. Lou could be a candidate if Lee Corso isn't available. Well, who do you think it will be?

Me?
I’d be a hardass with anyone who complained…no lie.
Plus, I’d only want 400K in salary plus a lifetime supply of Dr. Pepper. I’d say that’s reasonable.
I highly doubt it'll happen
But I think Deloss would be an excellent candidate. Just look what he’s done for UT. I know the haters gonna hate – and honestly, I wouldn’t want him gone from UT – but I really think he’d be a great commish. Realistically, though, I have no idea who would be next in line. Byrne has about as much of a chance as me, though.
Well, if you follow this thought process through it may not be best for UT.
If Deloss were the pick there would be a significant amount of complaining, true or not, that Texas runs the Big 12. After the last 2+ yrs of hearing the Big 12 implosion was Texas fault, do you want that to be the next Texas haters mantra? And I would assume if Deloss is gone this would be Mack’s cue to step into that role. Are you ready for that change? Is Harsin the answer or is there a national search? The ship has just been righted to an extent, so is the program steady enough at this point to make a coaching change. It would seem a national search would be in everyone’s best interest, UT included.
Your reply is exactly why I said I doubt it'll happen
The bitching from the rest of the conference would be unbearable. I think at that point it would be a little justified, but my stance on him being an excellent candidate has nothing to do with that. And again, I really would rather him stick around at UT. He’s doing as good a job as we could hope for, if not better.
I think Byrne is the front runner personally
He is at the end of his contract with aggies and he has to be sick of the changes over there. We know that his staff openly talked about Loftin being a “putz” and since Loftin is a “putz” Byrne is probably ready to move on. Aggies moved to $EC against his advice (big deal imo) and they also fired Sherman against his advice (another big deal).
He has done a good job for them in all sports. Can you imagine if Dodds takes the Big XII job and Byrne comes over to be UT’s AD. That would be weird.
I remember reading that Dodds and Neinas started a search firm together to place coaches, etc. They will make a good move—I’m sure of that, but I hope they don’t underestimate the backlash if it is Dodds.

You make some good points about Byrne
But I wonder what the Presidents position would be with is connection with A&M. Could it be a little too soon? I don’t think those “wounds” are healed yet, even if he did not want the move to the SEC.
I don't know if Dodds is that mad at Byrne or not
Byrne seemed to be aligned with Dodds, but it was that little Putz that caused all the broo ha ha. If Byrne was on the same page as Dodds it may actually work.

Kirk Bohls
Apparently, according to him, he knows everything.
Byrne makes a lot of sense
DeLoss is too tied to one school, and he’s very close to retirement. I doubt he’d want the job. Needs to be somebody with a stronger business than athletics hand. Big 12 will live or perish based on which schools can be retained and which can be added, and the TV dolllars are the No. 1 factor.
Byrne knows the league, and he knows the geographical situation. On his watch, A&M has succeeded in every sport except football. I’d give him a pass on that — interfering higher-ups and impatience keep bringing in a new staff every 4 or 5 years. But I suspect anyone associated with A&M, Mizzou, Colorado, etc., would have a hard time getting the votes of enough league members to be the choice.
Oliver Luck?
If a man in college kills 5 hookers and no one is there to hear it or see it, can he still run for the Senate?
hire Greg Davis!

HUSH! NO!
Do NOT conjure up the devil. Let He Who Shall Not Be Named scoot on over to Idaho or Ohio or wherever.
If a man is alone in the woods and he speaks, if no one hears him,,is he still wrong?
EXACTLY!!!
with Greg Davis at the helm the Big 12 would easily snap up San Jose State and Florida Atlantic

I don't think anyone who is closely connected to any of the Big 12 power programs would be considered
Dodds might do a good job, but I just don’t think anyone would stand for him…or Byrne. I hope they don’t consider a polarizing former politician.
Oliver Luck has been a weirdo at times, but I think he’s shown the ability to skillfully maneuver. The problem is he’s coming from a conference school, so I don’t want that to happen.
Ideally it’d be either a successful major conference’s deputy commissioner (or other top staffer) who had shown skill in some critical areas (media marketing, for example) or a commissioner of a lesser conference who had shown the ability to skillfully maneuver the realignment process, engage and retain current members, etc. I’m not sure who fits those profiles.

Won't be Dodds or any other Big XII AD
Dodds’ age and job security at UT work against him even being interested in becoming the conference commissioner. Now, him influencing who does get the job…that’s another matter.
Seriously, the new commissioner doesn’t necessarily need to have a college athletics background. He, or she, does need to know marketing backward and forward, needs close ties with ESPN, and it wouldn’t hurt to also be in with Time Warner, Comcast, and others. The new commissioner needs to be strong-willed, but at the same time, a consensus builder, given the fractured nature of relationships in the Big XII. The new commissioner needs to be a “big picture” leader, someone with his or her ideas what needs to happen for the Big XII to become peaceful, grow, and become the cash cow it can be. Being a UT fan, I think the new commissioner needs to understand the power source UT is, but doesn’t need to defer to UT’s wishes over what’s good for the conference. I liked Steve Hatchell, the original commissioner, and if there’s someone out there like him, working for another conference, we should grab him, but I don’t know who it would be. I’d love for the Big XII to find someone with much of the same skill set and connections as the PAC commissioner.
I don’t want UT to concede all of its’ advantages for the sake of a peaceful Big XII, but I would like to see UT be more willing to make some concessions for the good of the conference. Here’s the deal…For the short term, and maybe the long term, UT will be better off in a stable and profitable Big XII, rather than casting eyes at another, farther off conference. I don’t think the folks over at the state’s agricultural college come close to realizing how much they’ve divorced themselves yet from their home base of Texas by moving to the SEC, and I don’t want UT facing that same set of problems.
All of this being said, I have no idea who will be the next Big XII commissioner. I do know that hire will determine if the conference has a real future, or is just a stopover for UT and others before they head to another league.
