Ricky Seals-Jones Shows Off Receiver Skills at NLA
Ricky Seals-Jones Next Level Athlete.mov (via nlaplayerupload)
With only limited film to evaluate newest Longhorn commit Ricky Seals-Jones at wide receiver, this piece from Next Level Athlete taken in January and just posted provides some insight into what the do-everything prospect in high school can bring to the table at Texas when he arrives.
In the workout portion of the event, you can see the exceptional feet and agility RSJ has that makes him such a dangerous threat with the ball in his hands as a quarterback. Fluid and fast for someone 6-5 and 220 pounds.
All that fluidity and change of direction ability translated well to running routes versus air and working against defensive backs, where it appeared that RSJ dominated, using his hands to win the physical battles coming off the line of scrimmage or creating that extra bit of separation. And though there are some concerns about his hands and how well he can consistently attack the football, in these clips he Seals-Jones shows that he can go attack the football in the air away from his body and outside of his frame.
All in all, there's plenty to be excited about with the Sealy star just based on his high school film, but this video helps fill in some of the gaps to provide a look at what he can do at wide receiver right now. Questions? Answered. Concerns? Marginalized.
Yeah, buddy.

What's the likelihood he stays at WR.
I like him there, and think with the proper workout regimen and nutritional plan he could stay at a good WR weight. But needs wise, does he make the move?
Should he be a TE?
If he were to add the weight needed to be an effective blocker (25 – 30 lbs.), would he lose some of his mobility? Would it be best for him to get up to maybe 230 or so and be a physical receiver similar to Andre Johnson? There aren’t many CBs that could contain him alone, if any.
In response to the questions about RSJ's weight,
I think there are two key factors here — 1) he hasn’t been able to work out hard in the offseason because of commitments to other sports, notably basketball, and 2) he has the frame to eventually carry at least 240 pounds, with 250 not inconceivable.
As for the rest of the questions, there are some guys who can put on that weight and maintain their speed and I think RSJ is one of those guys, although that is more of a gut feeling than anything.
I think getting caught up too much in his position could be missing the point a bit, as I think that Bryan Harsin will move him around situationally to best stress the defense and exploit whatever match ups he sees. It’s not hard to envision an H-back or flex TE role for him either. At this point, I think it may be best just to view him as a multifaceted receiving weapon who has some significant upside as an in-line guy if he can commit to the blocking aspect of it.

Finley
Is the easy comparison as a player and his role. There was talk that if Packers put a franchise tag he might have been categorized as a WR and extra couple million. He actually took more snaps off the line than on the line. I could see that from RSJ. Regardless of his placement on the field he can be a match up nightmare. That said I am torn on which side of the ball I would like to see him play. He could might make a bigger difference at OLB than catching the ball.
Hell, it looks like he could start for us TODAY!

All I know is he has ball skills
Good cuts, decent footwork, great hands, and ability to seperate. Not to mention he looks like he strives for YAC.
Nightmare for LBs to cover.
They’ll need help. Which’ll make life easier for WRs. I’m not sure where he’ll end up but he’ll be a force no matter where he is.
isn't next level
the Baron Flenory group? Hate to see good kids even cross paths with that guy.
Flenory is New Level Athletics,
and apparently took down his website, though I think he still runs some 7on7 stuff in affiliation with Badger Sports.

Seals-Jones shows that he can go attack the football in the air away from his body and outside of his frame.
I saw the same thing in the highlights that showed his interceptions – just reached out and grabbed those things.
Unfortunately, he catches anything thrown right at him too close to the body…of course, if the hands are there (which they are) the rest can be coached, so I don’t have any real concerns.

I'd be more interested in the QB angle of what Ricky could do except for
the fact that Tyrone threw the ball at a Summer camp to Jones gives me confidence that he belongs in the receiving side of the equation. These two know what’s up and Ricky has openly stated he wants to play receiver. He is only 16 and from his coaches comments and some of the video I do think if he stays at QB all of this coming season the possibility will increase that he gets at least a look at the QB position. Love this kids attitude as he’s openly stated he’ll play wherever the coaches want.
Check out this video-
No, it’s not RSJ but it’s a running back who plays in a simlilar 5A distrcit to the one I did (they’ve shuffled them around over the years) when I played quarterback against teams consisting of Chance Mock, Rock Cartwright, Grant Irons, Sloan Thomas, Tony Jefferies, and B.J Symmons. It’s the COMPETITION- IT’S INSANE. You guys are amazing, everyone on this board knows more than me as this was a long time ago. NO concern about RSJ but admit it, 2A Swoopes passing stats?
Any concern to some of you?
Don't
think Harsin is really worried about his passing stats. You are right about 2a competition but Tyrone is being recruited because of what Harsin saw when he had him in camp plus his athleticism. There is something there that a lot of folks want.
I think you are right, But SWOOPES WILL NEVER PLAY QB full time at Texas
I’m comparing what he is doing to what VY did against 5A (I also looked at RG3 in HS last night though Copperas Cove is 4A) in a MAJOR competion district for houston and I’m not sold he will develop. VY use to throw for 3000 yards and 30+ touchdowns his Senior and Junior years while doing the whole 2500 yards rushing and 25 touchdown rushing thing too.
I’m glad we got Swoopes, but I think the coaches saw something else and it wasn’t his arm. He can’t spin it- Watch Vince against playoff 5A caliber teams.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2OJWrqGnyc8
The 2a private school around the corner from my 5A High School is where the kids went who were close but stuck behind a starter. By virtue of being 6’4 and QB at 5A I played at Texas State for a year before I realized I sucked. Before me the qb was plucked randomly off the basketball team his Senior Year b/c I was a Soph. One High School Year at QB and 3000 yards later he became a standout tight end at Sam Houston State before spending 5 or so years in the pros with the Browns and Dolphins.
THAT IS 5A. This 2A stuff is not and never should be a way to measure anyone’s skills against competition. Put him through drills with or without 2A guys across from him and it’s all the same- running against air.. Show me a monstrous win loss record, or godly stats, or some spin on his passes. Sloan Thomas scored 3 touchdowns on us and was unstoppable, so was Chance, BJ, and Jefferies. Again- all 5A.
Conditioning programs, facilities, quality of coaching, are huge drop offs too from even 5A to 4A. Our Head coach at Tomball makes 6 figures, stadiums seats 10k plus, it’s just different. If he has a monster year (his coaches have had 2 years with him to align something so he can do more than drop back and out run dbacks who run 4.9-5.2) then he may be who everyone believes he is. I don’t see it and see far more potential in RSJ, especially as a QB
2a v 5a
This is not an attempt to slam 2a programs or their coaches, but do you think there is a difference in coaching and facilities between levels? What is the difference in schemes and lineman? There is a reason that Swoopes has offers from Bama, Auburn, LSU, and OSU. The fact that you do not see the potential is meaningless. The fact that a guy like Meyer sees it, is very meaningful. He is not VY. OK, I will give you that. He is not one of the best 3 QBs to ever play college football. Big deal in no way does that mean he can not become a All-Big 12 QB. He is being recruited based on potential. Kid runs a 4.5 whether he is playing @ Whitewright, Katy, or Lake Travis. He may never reach his potential, but if he does he will play for Texas and in the NFL.
Something up with posting
Prob on my end. But wanted to say that RSJ and Swoopes threw together at Summer camp session and RSJ says he wants to be on the receiving end so I’m sure he knows enough to know he’s better off there from that experience alone.
Here is the video
It’s Keith Ford- it’s the way he’s dominating 5A competition, I think we have to go after him late this year if he is still available and all 3 of our main running backs look set to churn out 700-1000 rushing yards a year (after doing so next year), stay 3 or 4 year depending, then go to the NFL in the first round. I think this guy is something else.

Didn’t mean to post so much, wasn’t paying attention.
he is not coming
Really good looking RB, but it is clear he wants no part of Texas. Whether it is the competition, wants to go out of state, or just doesnt like Texas I do not know, but if I were you I would let the thought of him coming out of your mind.
thanks. I needed that
My hopes are not up.
However, guys who like to take a national tour (when they are from Texas we seem to go after them less unless they fill a huge hole and are the very best) and are sold on going out of state sometimes like the attention and remain uncommitted until the end. If that happens, I’d like to see us take a swing at Ford, especially if it looks like we are the new running back U which may be what it looks like if our big three stay healthy.
The issue with Ford
is that he’s not from Texas and wants to go out-of-state. He was invited in for JD1, but isn’t even interested in visiting Texas.

yeah he's from Florida

Agreed.
The Ford recruitment was pretty much dead before it ever had a chance to begin. The coaches liked Hicks enough to take him and he’ll provide solid depth with some upside, which is what Texas needs in the class.

he is the answer...
to the TE problem…this kids hands are outstanding…he knows how to position his body to “box out” the defenders…and the athletic ability makes ya drool…this class is shaping up prrrrrrrrrreety nicely
