Miles Onyegbule...why not TE?

In one of my previous post, I was asking you fellas to give me your opinions on a few players for the upcoming 2012 football season. As I hoped, most of you gave some really good points and thoughts for the highly anticipated (7 months!?!?) upcoming season. As I was reading through them, GoHornsGo really got me intrigued by one of his thoughts. He was suggesting that Miles Onyegbule move to TE. For those of you that aren't aware, Miles is a 6'4" 220 pound 19 year old. He is possibly the best blocking WR on the roster and from what it sounds like, he actually LIKES to block. With so much presumptive talent at the wide receiver position, why not take him, beef him up to about to about 240 pounds, and pray for the next Jermicheal Finley? With no TEs in this recruiting class, and no TEs on the 40 acres (or at least none that have me fired up), my question is....why not? Hook em

Tight end?

It’s probably not gonna happen this year, if at all. He’s more of a tall, possession-type receiver, good but not great speed. Retraining him to tight end would take some time, cut into his upcoming season, and he’d have to pack on some more weight for the coaches to even consider the move.

Would be fine streching the seam

but I am not sure he seal those large DE. TE blocking is huge for this offense, so really need a TE that can seal off the edge.

good points...

but i think adding 20 pounds quickly is not a stretch with his size and frame…i just don’t really see him getting any serious reps in games at WR so why not transition him along…this season may be unrealistic but i don’t really see any TEs on campus that could help in the passing game…i know the TEs are big time in the running game but Poehl doesn’t exactly strike fear in the hearts of opposing DCs…just a thought to ponder

Let's not give up on

Matthews and McFarland just yet. They are better options than Miles.

Matthews has shown he really isn't

Would prefer him at FB. Just doesn’t have the hands. Interested to see what M.J. can do.

Is this a joke?

Are there two of you? Do you have some kind of memory problem that doesn’t allow you to remember what you posted on various threads? Or, like, and eye problem that doesn’t allow you to see what you posted like 10 inches above?

I am going to pose this a different way

When you ask people to “post less,” which I now assume (thanks to Hopkins Horn) is because they are pushing other threads off the fan post section, do you really think the OP or others will understand that you are not being degrading to their post idea? I don’t understand the intentionally obtuse approach to a simple solution. Just remind people that the home page fan shots are limited. When you are so vague about the situation, all it leads to are unfortunate confrontations like the one directly above.

He is good at WR

He caught the ball when it was thrown to him…all 2 times last season. And Grant and McFarland are TE are better options. Would love to see him running wildcat with the option to throw. Him or Shipley

He should at least get a shot at TE...

I can see him in the mold of shorter Evan Moore from cleveland, not the best blocker but has the size and hands to stretch the field. I think he would only need to add about 15 more pounds (Jermichael Finley played at 235 in college) to be effective at TE

I can't stand OU, but I HATE the $EC...BIG12 all day!!!

by okhornfan on Feb 7, 2012 9:46 AM CST via mobile reply actions

thats what I'm thinking...

i don’t know if some of the people on here realize that jermichael finley was pretty much Miles when he came to UT. Tall receiver with a frame that allowed him to pack on mucho weight. We’ll see though. If he can help at WR then Im all for it, but I just don’t see him as a major contributor, so why not help out a position that could change the way defenses have to play us. Nothing helps out poor QB play like a safety blanket TE

Lot of people thought J-Mike

Could play WR coming out of HS (compliment). The comparisons to Miles are pretty interesting.

Onyegbule a WR

Actually, Miles started to gain the coaches’ favor toward the end of last year, and has good momentum heading into 2012. Harsin likes his skill set, and he will be used plenty in a lot of roles, but tight end is more than likely not one of them.

by sambunnell on Feb 7, 2012 2:32 PM CST reply actions

FINE!!! THE PARADE HAS BEEN CANCELLED DUE TO RAIN....

I guess I just desire a TE so bad that I’m seeing the oasis in Miles. He could do a little (hate to use this name but) Dan Buckner for us down in the red area…lining up off the TE and essentially running TE routes against LBs…just look at the NFL tho, TEs wreck freakin havoc on upper level defenses, I WANT ONE!

by ACnDaHorns on Feb 7, 2012 3:03 PM CST reply actions

I personally thought he'd end up converting to TE

when I’d heard about his recruitment in the first place.

There is a huge difference

between stalk blocking and in line blocking. Being good at one doesn’t make you good at the other. Also, and this is just my personal opinion, I don’t think Miles’ frame is suitable to carry the 240 – 260 lbs that would make him a true TE.

Miles did block a lot from what would I guess be labeled a "TE" position

Set right next to the OL. Not sure if he ended up blocking LBs or DEs, but he’s a way better natural blocker than a guy like Grant (and has been in the program for two years less I believe) plus has a much better frame for the position. If that’s his floor there, then I think the concept holds water. That combined with A) limited upside as a WR and B) the fact that the only pure TE on the roster is unproven RS Fr. M.J. McFarland make the move intriguing to me. Always thought he was a TE since I saw his highlights in high school. Also thought he would be a serviceable QB in a spread run system at a school like Oregon or Florida.

Not connected

To the line, I might add to that first sentence. Like a near slot or something. IDK what to call it. Michael Egnew kind of role.

We were in his district

his junior year and his senior year, when I went to work for a different school, I saw him play QB in the playoffs. I just don’t see it. We’ll have to agree to disagree on this one. If he was blocking LB’s from the slot he was cracking down on them which you have the inherent advantage of leverage in that situation. I just think stalk blocking CB’s and cracking on LB’s is a much different assignment from in line blocking on DE’s for 30+ plays a game.

No No No

differing opinions are good. We don’t get far as people if we have nobody else who speaks up with fresh ideas; right, wrong or indifferent. I enjoyed the perspective, just wanted to give my evaluation as well.

Agreed.

This is precisely why I said he won’t play TE.

by sambunnell on Feb 9, 2012 1:42 AM CST up reply actions

AND....

just because we THINK MJ Mac is going to be a decent option for us, do we want only ONE option at TE? I just really think that Shipley, Davis, Marquise and Cayleb are going to get most of the significant reps at WR…then mix in the Daje/DJ/Grey receiving options and its just going to be hard for Miles to get a lot of touches at WR…That said, with his size, if he can add speed and become a stud WR, i would def love that as well. Just nice to have options on the 40 acres again.

by ACnDaHorns on Feb 7, 2012 9:10 PM CST reply actions

options...

Man, we ain’t running out of bodies at TE any time soon. DJ Grant had a huge game last year…then disappeared a lot…but the potential is there. Dominique Jones and Barrett Matthews have starting experience, and Darius Terrell saw some time. MJ may or may not start, but regardless, we do have options. And they aren’t terrible. Plus, just hold your horses and cross your fingers, and Ricky Seals-Jones just might give you all the option you want at TE in 2013, baby.

Bodies =\= production,

and we didn’t have good production from the TE spot last year.
