Breakdown of Each Position (Defense)

DE- Jeffcoat and Okafor are no-brainers here. Both should have breakout seasons. Shiro-san will be a situational pass rusher and I'm picking him to have a monster season. Reggie Wilson is a big question mark. Unsure if he will contribute or not.

DT- Moore, MB2, Dorsey, Jackson, and Whaley will be in a rotation on the D-Line. I expect Moore and Jackson or Dorsey to start on the 2-deep. With Howell transferring, MB2 and other incoming freshmen could get increased playing time.

LB- I've got Hicks, which is a no-brainer. Now it gets interesting. I don't know if D. Santos can beat out Edmond, but I expect Edmond to win the starting nod. Edmond will need to keep his weight down, unless he wants to play on the D-Line. The third linebacker I'm going with is D.Cobbs. With some added muscle, i think he'll do just fine.

CB- Pretty easy here, C.Byndom and Quandre the Giant locking the opposing receivers down.

SS- A. Phillips will start when not in the nickel. M. Thompson when A. Phillips is in the Nickel.

FS- Machete will play here or nickel.

Nickel- I'm not sure about nickel, but I think it will be Machete or Phillips.

Depth Charts

are going to be of limited value in explaining our defense. We’re going to play 15-20 guys a lot and bring tons of different fronts and personnel packages against everyone.
What we did to Cal is a taste of what’s coming down the pipe for the Big 12 this year. 2009-level defensive dominance, maybe better.

I agree, depth chart doesn't mean a lot. Still, the starters will get the majority of the snaps

I see 5 DTs in the rotation. No idea who will be the stud, the Randall bellcow (regardless of position). Dorsey seems most likely. Whaley is the wild card. Jackson and Brown (Doctor, My Eyes. Sorry) are the two uber talents.

Reggie Wilson either needs to step up or step out. Toshiro is going to play (Mack won’t redshirt out-of-staters) and I expect Ridgeway to get meaningful snaps as well. Those two true frosh could be 2013’s starters. I’m not writing Wilson off, but he needs to up his game.

Linebacker is hard to predict. Only Hicks has played much. Shakily, I list Hicks, Cobbs and Edmond as 1-2-3, followed by Kendall Thompson. I love the Santos potential — but I’m not all in on him until I see some evidence. Benson? Jackson? Somebody falls by the wayside; Jinkens will play, but maybe not at LB this season. Not a senior in the bunch! Hello, 2013.

I’m curious to see how far Josh Turner has progressed, and I think AJ White is like Wilson — step up or get out of the way. Echols will play. Thomas might. Leroy Scott, I have no idea.

I’m guessing Thompson gets Gideon’s job, with Phillips remaining the top sub at all four positions and playing in nickel packages. Colbert will play. Sheroid Evans is a force.

The competition

at DB will be great to watch. With the top 4 pretty set (Diggs, Byndom, Vaccaro, Phillips) the other guys will be fighting for backup and nickel spots.

Josh Turner, Sheroid Evans, Mykkele Thompson, AJ White will all be battling for playing time. There are teams in the Big 12 who wouldn’t mind that line-up as their starters. Gonna be a great dynamic to watch this season.

I am less shaky than you on LB’s. I think you have how it starts with Hicks, Cobbs, Edmond. I think Thompson plays, but not much. I hope Tevin Jackson gets in the mix. I think he will be a force. Santos and Jinkens may see some time as well. That is a deep, talented group, even with the reaches on Benson, DeLa Torre, Moss and Cole over the last few years.

Agreed

DB will be the hardest to predict. I have a feeling rotations will be heavy. I think Phillips earns the starting FS spot honestly. Then shifts to nickel and Evans comes into FS. However, Vaccarro could come into the nickel and Evans comes in at SS. Then there’s Thompson. See my point? I agree though that Phillips gets the FS spot.

LB will be Hicks, Cobbs, Edmond. I think Santos gets rotations with Edmond if he has good summer workouts. Edmond still hasn’t dropped to ideal playing weight. I really want to see Jackson on the field. He will kill someone too.

Our DL is set…rotation rotation rotation. I believe Ridgeway might actually get into the 2 deep this year if he plays well enough in the summer.

5th DB/SS

is going to be based first on whom can cover ground laterally and keep people in front, secondly on versatility.
OR, if we have a stud safety (besides Phillips and Vaccaro) who can play close to the LOS, blitz, and cover in man-to-man really well but isn’t as solid in the deep-support role perhaps we play Phillips back there and use the new stud as the FS.

My guess, based on virtually no game tape, is that Thompson plays a Gideon role and primarily acts in deep support with occasional forays into the Hot 2 field/Hot 3 zones and blitzes while Phillips takes on those latter roles much more frequently.

Ideally, Thompson will be able to offer most of what Phillips offers and we can be completely unpredictable in who is deployed in which roles on a down to down basis.

That's what I'm thinking...

we have too much versatility at DB to really know who is going to play where and when. Too many guys are interchangable. However, this is a good problem to have.

I see Diaz and Akina doing exactly what you say…being unpredictable with who is back there. Phillips, Evans, and Thompson can rotate. I think Phillips earns the nod based on performance but that could change because of his surgery…I hope not but it’s possible. I’m really looking forward to seeing what Thompson can do during the spring game. This might give us a better idea of his ability.

Actually I choose Diggs

Amazing frosh year with plenty of room for improvement. Love the way he plays.
