Bomani Jones puts the legacy of Ricky Williams in perspective
Former Longhorn Ricky Williams has always been a difficult guy to figure out. Over at the mothership, Bomani Jones tries to assess the legacy of an enigmatic and, at times, reluctant football player still willing to share elements of his personality that many in the game either don't posses or choose not to share.

I've always loved Ricky Williams
His very first carry as a Longhorn, against Hawaii there, he went around 90-plus yards for a TD. They called it back on a penalty. Disappointing, yes, but he flashed the speed, strength and ability that one day would win him a Heisman. Like that first carry, his life would have some measure of penalties and disappointment, but he would endure in the end.
Real humans beings are rare. Those that carried the ball and ran like Ricky seldom ever come along.
Hope he comes back to Austin occasionally.
Wherever you may go, Ricky, go in peace. I feel you have more than earned it.
Ditto...
It was nice when 3rd and 4 seemed like a sure thing. Ricky spoiled us.
My favorite Ricky run was against Notre Dame…the play has him going left, but ND stopped it, a couple of ND defenders get to Ricky and seem to have him wrapped up…then, he spins out of their grasp and reverses field and scores (or almost scores). Seems like he lost some of his jersey, too. I can’t find this run on any of his highlights, but it sure ought to be included.

Reading between the lines
are you saying you’re not a fan of Ricky Williams?
Oh. Aggies, I apologize; I forgot you were there. You may go now.

Ah, the myopic Aggie perspective
Was concerned we wouldn’t be hearing your uniquely objective perspective. I suppose you’ve been too busy making new SEC! friends on their blogs to post the most recent results of your men’s basketball team on your one man dictatorship. In case you missed it they lost a home game to The University of Texas.
Wow!
Hmmm, I’m always amazed at Beergut’s sage-like wisdom. Thanks for sharing this lil’ pearl with us poor dumb t-sips
I'm sure you have maximized your potential!
As an idiot that is.

Great Ricky quote
“I don’t think you’re supposed to leave a legacy at age 34. At my funeral, I think the significance of football would just be something I experienced a lot of success doing. I like to think of it as a shade of a color that was part of my life.”
