Texas Women's Basketball

What is going on inside Texas Lady Longhorn basketball? I know they lost their young phenomenon star to injury early this year, but really, conference near-doormat? Really? When I went to UT we had a lousy football team (McWilliams era), an emerging Men's hoops team (Penders' first few seasons), an awesome baseball team (Gus-ball) but a sterling women's hoops team (Conradt with seven straight seasons undefeated in conference, just missed her perfect season).

The program had surely grown stale under Jody, but Gail Goestenkors has been a big disappointment for me. She had built a great resume at Duke and seemed like a great steal at the time. But midway through her fifth season, staring at a 3-8 conference record, only one season with a winning conference record with her tenure on the 40 Acres defined as a middle-of-the-pack team in conference, average to middling program nationally, I'm beginning to wonder about her future at UT.

Texas women's basketball has been and needs to become again a consistent top five program. Five years is a long time to get results. Can you imagine Kansas, Duke, Kentucky sticking with a men's Bball coach for five years of poor results like Gail has delivered now at UT? No way, not with expectations of marquee teams like they have. Well, dammit, that's what Texas Lady Longhorn basketball is and should be!!!

I say give her one more season ONLY because of this year's injuries. She should know she's on the spot and needs to pick it up in 2012-2013 or she's gone. What do you think?

I think Coach G is a great coach, how else do you explain 4 Final Fours at Duke

but she has absolutely zero connections in the state and its showing in recruiting year in and year out. The state’s best recruits are going to Baylor, A&M or out of state. She made the mistake when she was hired of bringing her own coaches without any AAU ties to the state. As sad as that it is it’s the truth. One of the Baylor assistants was an AAU coach prior to getting hired at Baylor.

Top recruits in last 4 years:
2011- Krystal Forthan Georgetown, now freshman at LSU, McDonald’s AA
2010-Meghan Simmons from Cibolo Steele, now sophomore at Tenn, Chiney Ogwumike from Cy Fair, now sophomore at Stanford
2009- Brittney Griner
2008 Nnemkadi Ogwumike from Cy Fair now senior at Stanford

Coach G has lacked any significant recruiting foothold since she got here and she’s only making small dents. That coupled with her approach obviously not resonating with her team results in the train wreck we have to be exposed to from this program. I am sick of the injury excuse with this program. She has enough healthy players to run the lineup but those players play like shit….too many turnovers, not post game, and playing high energy basketball for 5-10 minutes out of 40. That doesn’t get it done anywhere much less the most competitive conference in the nation. She won’t be going anywhere for two years as I expect the administration to honor her two contract. But don’t anyone expect the results will be any better next year. This team has no juniors and will be very, very young. The only guard with significant experience that can stay healthy is Fuessel and she has no ability to make a pass into the post. With her it all boils down to if her shot is on or not. They’ll be young guards trying to get the ball into a 6’7" freshman post and we obviously don’t have anyone on staff that can teach young girls how to do that.

In the real world

results like hers get you fired.

She can’t recruit Texas or nationwide.

Evidently she can’t coach for her teams are not fundamentaly sound.

This year was her mulligan year and she has failed miserbaly.

She can’t fish so it’s time for Plonsaky to cut bait.

She needs to go

Its just embarrassing 3-8 in conference play. We can’t compete with national powers either. She’s not recruiting. She’s not coaching well. It was a bad match, and we are paying her 1 mill, perhaps our worst investment in a coach ever ( since womens bball loses $ anyways). No reason to be giving her so much money. The only way she’d be worth that to our program is if we were getting to the sweet 16 and beyond annually. As it stands right now we are lucky to make the tourney.

However she’s probably back another season bc of her buyout. Not that we can’t afford it, more that there probably isn’t enough interest to make getting rid of her immediately, worth it

Gail needs to go now

no mulligan year. she has shown no improvement in recruiting elite talent in 5 years.
we are TEXAS. Plonsky needs to bite the bullet and send her packing. sorry. women’s
bb is an embarrassment and the change needs to be made NOW so someone can
get us to the Top 20. you can make excuses all day, but by any job review, she should
be fired.

This should serve as a reminder to those who want to fire Barnes

People want to jump on the Gonzaga or Butler coach, but they could very well have the same problem with not being able to recruit here.

Seems like Jody had lots of baggage

and Gail didn’t.She should be able to recurit Texas but it seems she can’t.IMHO if she can’t have a winning program here and now it isn’t going to happen.

Thanks to the LHN and other things I haven’t seen a game this year but this team is worse than last year.

This is TEXAS and we don’t put inferior teams out in anything.

Grinear will be gone at Baylor and A$M gone too. Next year should be competative for all the teams.

I have heard nothing about Gail’s recruits.Unless she gets a top class we will be at the bottom of the Big 12 again and this is not acceptable.

i think...

our women’s team should scrimmage the local 7th grade team…thats about the level of basketball that they play…i think women’s basketball would benefit if the rim was 8’6"…otherwise, its hard for me to watch layups and 3 pointers

That would be cool

I would wear out their practice court with skydunks.

So basically you only watch basketball for the dunks and highlights? You sound like a real fan!

College basketball in general...

is hard to watch…40 second play clocks are brutal…plus I live in an NBA town, why would I obsess over college hoops? College basketball is honestly only worth watching from now until the tourney. I understand some people love college basketball, but you gotta admit that its slow and can be painful to watch. Especially if you’re like me and watch the NBA regularly. What do you think, maybe 10 kids from the entire NCAA could actually PLAY in the league? Thats why i just watch the highlights from college

"What do you think, maybe 10 kids from the entire NCAA could actually PLAY in the league?"

I bet there are at least 10 freshman that would be playing in the NBA if the NBA didn’t prevent it.

by Texas Wahoo on Feb 14, 2012 12:25 PM CST up reply actions

ok...

name them…after about 3 or 4 you will thing…wow, maybe not…the NBA is hands down the hardest league to make…trust me, there may be 10 that will actually play in the league next year…will say tho, no one saw that chinese kid out of harvard as a prospect and look at all the LINSANITY!!!!!!

by ACnDaHorns on Feb 14, 2012 1:43 PM CST reply actions

i remember when Hasheem Thabeet was tearing college hoops apart...

now he’s literally a punch line for uncoordinated, goofy, flash in the pans….he struggles to get playing time with the Rockets D league team! Whats Kemba Walker doing this season? Splitting time on a 4-24 Charlotte team? With basketball being a global game now, college hoopsters are up against the odds trying to make a 12 man roster in the NBA

by ACnDaHorns on Feb 14, 2012 1:49 PM CST reply actions

How hard is it to press reply?

The NBA is hard to watch.Absolutely 0 defense. There are 82 games.

I understand some people love college basketball, but you gotta admit that its slow and can be painful to watch.

I think college basketball is perfectly paced, as long as the officials don’t try to control the game by calling foul after foul after foul. I think you’ve got college basketball confused with baseball. If college basketball is slow with a 35( not 40) second clock, then baseball must make your eyes bleed. Maybe that’s why you hate Augieball? Not enough action?

haha, the good teams in the NBA (half the league) plays great defense…I appreciate the athleticism that I get to watch in the pro ranks as well…

NBA Sucks

push ,shove, handcheck, hack, palm, three seconds disreguarded, travel, hang on the rim andlots of moving picks.

What they play is rollerball without skates.

Pro ball ruined college ball.If you are not physical you can’t play now.

Back to Coach G . . .

Serious question: Is it the fact that she can’t recruit without being propped up by an established basketball school (i.e. a Duke)? Can’t motivate players? Can’t X & O?

I’m a long way from Austin and haven’t kept up with the women but was on the 40 acres during Conradt’s great years and enjoyed the women’s game. I’m stunned that Goestowhatever is still the head coach at Texas.

Nothing is more real than nothing.

by AKHorn on Feb 15, 2012 6:15 PM CST reply actions

I don’t think it’s that she can’t recruit, it’s that her arrogance/ignorance about being able to recruit the same as she did at Duke. The profile of player choosing Duke is not going to the be same as a girl wanting to play at Texas. She severed all ties with Jody’s assistants who had the local Texas ties and she herself has admitted that was a mistake even though she defends the decision by saying she didn’t want to coach with people she didn’t know. I think she totally underestimated how tough it would be recruiting in the Big 12. You are competing against A&M, Baylor, OU all teams that are having more success than Texas. If you want to play ACC women’s ball you go to Duke if you want to win. If you want to play Big 12 ball you have a lot of options and if you want to play in the NCAA tourney (besides being a one and done) you have a lot better options than Texas. There has to be an element of success in the program to help with recruiting and so far that is glaringly lacking.

She can motivate at times but her constant screaming, fits and dropping of the f bomb have got to be wearing thin with her players. If you’re being yelled at that much it starts to become just noise after awhile and/or you start to believe you aren’t good enough which is why you’re constantly being yelled at.

I thought she was a good X & O coach. Her defenses schemes are usually good and she tries new things when old things aren’t working and mixes it up a fair bit. She isn’t able to trap and press as much as she’d like because of the injuries. However, this year I gave up on her because the offensive schemes she’s running make Rick Barnes look like an offensive genius. I honestly do not know what it is about the University of Texas and the inability of an offense to have an entry pass into the post. I’m beginning to think that is not part of the game anymore.
