The fall from grace is complete.

I thought about making this a simple FanShot, but realized these topics tend to generate quite the discussion around here. So I gathered up my thoughts, and decided to drop them here.

The fall from grace, which Notre Dame started many years ago, is now complete. I've never really been a fan of Notre Dame, despite my Catholic upbringing, but I could always respect their defiance of "the man". Not bowing to the pressure of joining a conference, playing their schedule - their way, and classic uniforms that were a hallmark of their tradition. All of that seems like so long ago, now. Notre Dame (I keep typing damn...) has sold out. This is for a single game this year, but to me it's a symbol of their acceptance that they are no longer what they used to be.

This not only saddens me, but it scares me. How long will it be before someone in Belmont decides it is time to fold to the pressure of ESPN and/or Nike and get some crazy uniforms for one game in a year. We're in the early stages of this crazy uniform fetish schools have adopted, but where does it go from here? Undoubtedly schools will start to loosen the reigns and wear these atrocities more and more often, until every school is Oregon. At least that's where I see it going. I do hope I'm wrong.

I fight the urge to accept a one game uniform. Not just because our current uniforms are perfect as is, not just because I'm a traditionalist at heart, but also because I fear where it might go if we allow it just. this. once. As a father, I can't let the kids do something they shouldn't just. this. once. because that one time becomes an excuse to get away with more: "but you let me do this that one time...". As a fan, I don't want to see the uniforms changed, even for a game, because that gives leverage to businesses (who are making lots and lots of money of these instances) to come in and say: "but you did it that one time...".

Hopefully Texas will not experience the long road that is the fall from grace, though the last two years seems plenty long. And while I do think Notre Dame can make it back to a big time, successful program, for me, this uniform change seems like rock bottom for a program full of tradition.
