Horns in the NFL: Weeks 5 & 6

Jamaal Charles scored twice vs the Raiders via euro.mediotiempo.com

First of all, I would like to apologize for not publishing a Horns in the NFL edition last week. I was away from home all week visiting Morocco. I was able to watch the Iowa State game there, but unfortunately didn't see any of the NFL games. And of course, I didn't miss a bit of the Red River Rivalry last Saturday when we beat the Sooners in the greatest Texas game of the last 4 years.

Our NFL Longhorns are continuing to struggle with injuries. Currently there are 4 former Longhorns on the Injured Reserve. The most recent was Aaron Ross, who will miss the rest of the season with a back injury. Ross had become one of the New York Giants' starting CBs after the injury of Corey Webster. Another dent for the Giants, a team who has yet to win an NFL game this season.

But not everything is bad. There is probably no hotter player, other than Peyton Manning, in the NFL than Jamaal Charles. The Chiefs RB has scored at least one TD in each of the six games (two vs the Raiders last Sunday). In most of the Chiefs offensive plays, JC25 is the main character. As expected, he leads the team in the running game, but also in the passing game. He has caught 33 passes (just two shy of the 35 he caught in the whole 2012 season) for 300 yards (best among RBs). There is little doubt that If he continues playing at this level, he will get a look for the MVP this season. The Chiefs and the Denver Broncos are the only unbeaten teams in the league.

After missing the last 4 games with a hand injury, Marquise Goodwin played again last Sunday and caught his first NFL TD pass against the Bengals. The score tied the game for the Bills and sent the game into overtime, where the Bengals got the win thanks to a FG. The other offensive player to score a TD was Chris Ogbonnaya, who missed Week 5 due to an injury. The Browns FB caught a 4-yard TD pass from Brandon Weeden during his team's loss against the Lions.

If Jamaal Charles is the offensive star of the former Longhorns, there is no doubt that Earl Thomas fulfills that role on the defensive side. ET has recorded 3 interceptions so far, the last of which came last Sunday when he intercepted Ryan Fitzpatrick during the Seahwaks win over the Titans. Derrick Johnson had his best game of the season vs the Raiders after recording 8.5 tackles and 2 sacks.

The main news off-the-field is that Fozzy Whittaker was released by the Chargers one week ago and claimed off waivers by the Browns. He is now Ogbonnaya's teammate. Fozzy didn't play last week but given the bad situation of the Cleveland backfield he could earn some playing time. He will have to battle Greg Little to become the Brown's kickoff returner.

PS: Only 4 of the 23 votes got the last poll question right. None of the players mentioned wore #7 on the 1969 National Championship Team, actually, no player wore that number during the 1969 season. Of course, I didn't know the answer, lucky I had help from an old friend who is also old.
