Horns in the NFL: Week 4

Img_0155_jpg_medium

Me and Cullen Loeffler.

NFL is providing me with happy moments this year. First, these posts are giving the chance to contribute to this amazing community. And most recently, I received media credentials to be an accredited journalist for the game that Steelers and Vikings played in London last Sunday.

It was my first opportunity to work inside the League and I had a wonderful time. I went to Vikings practice on Thursday and the Steelers the following day. You can read my experience in two articles I wrote for the Spanish newspaper I work for. For those of you interested, you can brush up on your Spanish, or you can also use Google Translate!

Link Day 1, Link Day 2. Any critiques are welcome!

I had the chance to meet Brian Robison, Cullen Loeffler and Curtis Brown. I couldn't talk much with Robison and Brown as they were in a hurry after their practice, but they told me how wonderful it was to meet Longhorns fans all around the world. And they signed my number 7 Deon Beasley-John Chiles-Garrett Gilbert-Connor Brewer-Marcus Johnson Longhorns jersey.

Loeffler, the Vikings long snapper, was extremely friendly as we chatted for about 15 minutes and he was the last Vikings player to head into the locker room. He also signed my jersey and told me about his years at UT and his point of view about the current state of the program, in his own words "changes are ahead". I told him about these posts I write on BON about the former Longhorns and he told me not forget to report his two tackles on special teams. He also added how much he would love to visit Spain. As a result, he has become my all-time Longhorn favourite. A LONG SNAPPER! It was a shame I couldn't find him in the locker room as he had already left when I was able to go inside.

I hope to be able to repeat this for the second London game that will take place at the end of this month with Jaguars and 49ers. Maybe I will be able to meet Colt McCoy!

Once again this week, Jamaal Charles had the most impressive performance among the former offensive Longhorns. He scored his fourth TD of season on a 2 yard pass from Alex Smith. He racked up 127 yards of total offense in the Chiefs 31-7 win over the Giants. His two best plays were a 24 yard run up the middle and a catch good for a 31 yard gain. But he wasn't the only former Texas RB who had a score during week 4, as Browns FB Chris Ogbonnaya caught a TD pass late in the fourth quarter to give his team their second win of the season.

On the defensive side, Aaron Williams made two of Joe Flacco's 5 INTs in his Bills' win over the Ravens. His first pick came in the first quarter and the second one in the 3th period. Williams had been playing safety during this season, but had to start at CB due to injuries suffered by his teammates, and the results were impressive (2 picks and 4 PBUs). He didn't finish the game due to a lower back injury but he is probable for the Bills game on Thursday. His teammate, Marquise Goodwin, has started to see limited practice but it's unlikely he will return to regular play this week. Earl Thomas had a pick during the outstanding come-from-behind win of his Seahawks over the Texans. He also forced a fumble and broke up 2 passes. Another defensive player with a great performance was Brian Orakpo with 2 sacks on Raiders' QB Matt Flynn.

Unfortunately, Phil Dawson missed both of his two FG attempts, one of which was a 71 yard free-kick attempt just before the end of the first half.

In other news, Adam Caplan reported on twitter this that former Longhorns Kheeston Randall and Jordan Shipley worked out this week with the Indianapolis Colts and Tennessee Titans, respectively. Colt McCoy has new competition for the 49ers backup QB position as they signed free agent John Skelton after releasing Seneca Wallace.
