Horns in the NFL: Week 7

Last Sunday, Brian Orakpo made his first pick in the NFL via www.washingtonpost.com

Unfortunately, injuries continue to be the headline regarding the NFL Horns. There is nothing worse, in my opinion, than a head injury, and that is what happened to Jermichael Finley last Sunday, when he got hit in the head by Cleveland Browns' safety Tashaun Gipson, after grabbing 7 passes for 52 yards and a TD. The alarms sounded when he couldn't get up and had to be carted off the field, and then taken to the hospital in an ambulance. The news from the hospital was not good and there was a rumor he was going to have to undergo urgent surgery on his neck, but luckily those rumors were false. Finley had to spend the whole night in the ICU. As he himself reported on twitter, he was transferred out of the ICU and more importantly he was able to walk and had feeling on all his extremities. He is expected to be released from the hospital next Thursday.

After watching the documentary ‘The League of Denial', my point of view of this wonderful sport has changed a bit. I wish Jermichael and the rest of the players all the best. Head injuries are something to worry about. Unfortunately, the Packers' TE also suffered a concussion not long ago. After this first injury, his 5-year old son asked him to give up football. I imagine his kid is really struggling watching his dad suffer another serious injury. I don't know if he will consider retirement as a possibility, but I certainly hope the game of football doesn't impact his long-term health. I wish the same for David Ash. As a Longhorn fan, I hope he returns to the field soon , but only if it doesn't impact his long term health as well.

Fortunately, Jamaal Charles and Earl Thomas are still healthy and making a huge impact in the League. JC scored his 8th TD of the season on a 1 yard run. He has racked up more than 100 total yards per game in all seven games of this season. With the Broncos loss, the Chiefs are the only undefeated team and they have a good chance to win this week since they are hosting the Browns. Meanwhile, Earl Thomas made his fourth INT of the season (second game in a row with a pick). So far, these are the Longhorn MVPs of the season.

The Seahawks safety was only one of the three former Longhorn players who had a pick last weekend. Redskin Brian Orakpo picked off Jay Cutler during the second quarter of the game and returned it for a touchdown, the first pick-6 of his career. The other former Longhorn with a pick was Bills' safety Aaron Williams. He intercepted Dolphin QB and former Aggie Ryan Tannehill during the first quarter of the game, and helped his team get an important victory over their divisional rival.

Offensively, Fozzy Whittaker made his first impression as a Brown. He had 11 yards on 5 carries and caught 2 passes for 13 yards. He was the Browns' primary KO returner with an average of 34 yards on his 3 returns (with a longest one of 56 yards). With Fozzy on the team, Ogbonnaya's production fell to 15 yards on 4 rushes and he failed to make a catch for first time this season.

The off-field good news is Emmanuel Acho signed with the Philadelphia Eagles after spending time on the New York Giants' Practice Squad. This is his return to the Eagles after being released earlier by them to make space on their 53-man roster.

It is already time to fill out the ballots for the Pro Bowl. The ex-Longhorns present are:

RB Jamaal Charles, FB Chris Ogbonnaya, TE Jermichael Finley, OG Justin Blalock, OC Lyle Sendlein, DT Roy Miller, DEs Lamarr Houston and Brian Robison, LBs Derrick Johnson and Brian Orakpo, DBs Aaron Williams, Kenny Vaccaro, Earl Thomas, Michael Griffin and Tarell Brown and kickers Phil Dawson and Justin Tucker.
