Horns in the NFL: Week 11

Raiders' DE Lamarr Houston sacking Texans' QB Case Keenum via binaryapi.ap.org

I usually start the Horns in the NFL weekly review with the offensive side of the ball, but this time I want to make an exception. Last weekend 5 of our former Longhorns recorded at least one sack, making a big argument for the DLU argument I brought after week 1 of the season!

Roy Miller recorded his first sack this season by tackling Carson Palmer for a loss of six yards on the last play of the third quarter. Cory Redding also had a sack, his fourth of the season, after tackling Ryan Fitzpatrick for a one yard loss on the first play of the Thursday Night Football Game. Lamarr Houston recorded his 5th sack of the season against the Texans last Sunday. The Raiders DE, who is in a one-year contract, sacked Case Keenum for a loss of 15 yards in the 1st quarter of the game and drove the Texans out of Field Goal range, forcing them to punt.

Brian Robison also had a sack, his 4th of the season, last Sunday when he tackled Russell Wilson 6 yards behind the line of scrimmage in the first quarter. Lastly, Brian Orakpo recorded 1.5 sacks against the Eagles, with one solo for a loss of 5 yards.

The veteran Broncos CB, Quentin Jammer had his first turnover of the season after recovering a fumble during the game against the Chiefs, giving Jamaal Charles, DJ Johnson and company their first loss of the season.

In fact, the Broncos held Jamaal Charles to 72 yards and no TD, his worst statistical performance of the year. Curiously, JC25 was the former Longhorn tailback with the least total yards last weekend after both Browns' backs, Chris Ogbonnaya and Fozzy Whittaker gained 99 and 78 yards (including returns) respectively against the Bengals.

The only TD was scored by Marquise Goodwin who had his best game of the season catching 8 passes for 81 yards. The TD came on a 43 yd pass from EJ Manuel, who took advantage of Goodwin's speed. Antonio Cromartie could do little to contain our favourite Olympian (no disrespect for Sanya Richards-Ross).

Ravens' kicker Justin Tucker played a big role for his team again last week against the Bears. The clutch kicker forced the game into overtime with a FG in the last second of the game. Unfortunately, Tucker wasn't able to do the same in overtime as the Flacco offense fell short on the first drive of the OT, and the Bears won the game in the terrible weather.

We have both bad and good news for the off-the-field section. Kheeston Randall was released by the Bengals after only two weeks in Cincy. On the bright side, Michael Huff finally found a new home as he signed with the Denver Broncos last Monday, joining Quentin Jammer. Maybe he can turn his season around and win a Super Bowl ring. Who knows.

NFL.com has released a note about the leaders in the ProBowl votes.Peyton Manning is the player with the most votes. Jamaal Charles stands in third position with 453.761 votes. He is 200.000 behind Peyton and 90.000 behind Saints' QB Drew Brees. Earl Thomas, with 195.586 votes is the FS with the most votes and Chris Ogonnaya is the second FB behind Panthers' Mike Tolbert, with 135.692 votes total.

You can still support our former Longhorns until the 26th of next month, by including them on your ballot. The players eligible to receive votes are:

RB Jamaal Charles, FB Chris Ogbonnaya, OG Justin Blalock, OC Lyle Sendlein, DT Roy Miller, DEs Lamarr Houston, Cory Redding and Brian Robison, LBs Derrick Johnson and Brian Orakpo, DBs Aaron Williams, Kenny Vaccaro, Earl Thomas, Michael Griffin and Tarell Brown and kickers Phil Dawson and Justin Tucker.
