Texas releases 2014 football schedule

Jim Cowsert-USA TODAY Sports

The schedule includes a brutal stretch of eight conference games in eight weeks.

The Big 12 athletic directors approved the 2014 schedules for the league on Tuesday and have released them to the public.

The non-conference slate for the Texas Longhorns includes the season opener with North Texas visiting and a return trip from BYU, which came to Austin in 2011, before the opening part of the season ends with a trip to AT&T Stadium in Arlington to play UCLA, providing a second game in the Metroplex to showcase the program.

After a bye week, the conference schedule starts with a trip to Kansas and then a big home game against Baylor, which may enter the 2014 season as the league favorite. Beyond that, there are no long road stretches or groups of games that would appear at this time to have a chance to define the season.

There will, however, be one fewer bye week than 2013, as the Horns will play eight of nine conference games without a break, a two-month stretch that will result in little recovery time -- if Texas is going to compete for the Big 12 title next year, it will probably have to do so by avoiding major injuries.

Of course, the two biggest questions surrounding the 2014 season regard the availability of quarterback David Ash and whether Mack Brown will still be the coach.
