Horns in the NFL: Preseason wk 3

Colt McCoy can finally smile after being named 49ers backup QB by Jim Harbaugh via ww1.hdnux.com

Last Tuesday the teams had to get down to 75 players on their rosters. It’s an important date for most of the players who are battling for a roster spot. Roddrick Muckelroy (Redskins) and Frank Okam (Giants) have been the only former Longhorns to be cut so far. Tony Hills was also cut by the Bills last week but he was signed by the Raiders last Tuesday.

All of the final preseason games this week will take place on Thursday (29th) and the teams will have to make their last cuts before Saturday, so the players will have one last chance to make a good impression on their coaches. Vince Young was able to do this exact thing last Friday and due to his strong performance, has now been selected as Rogers’ backup QB for the Packers.

Since the final cuts to reach a 53 man roster will have to be made after the week four preseason games Thursday night, I will only detail the status of the players who are at risk of being cut before Saturday. Then I will provide a full status update of each Longhorn before week one of the regular season.

  • QBs:

#13 Vince Young (Green Bay Packers): QB#2

Good news for our favourite Longhorn! Probably best player to have ever worn the Burnt Orange jersey has made the cut and is expected to be named the Packers backup QB after Graham Harrell was cut last week. Last Saturday, Vince had his best game of the preseason. He led the team to score his only TD of the game with an 80 yard drive that ended with a 1 yard TD pass to rookie FB Jonathan Amosa. He was the victim of a bad snap on his second (and last) drive of the game. You can enjoy his entire highlights by clicking here. His final stats were: 6/7, 41 yards, 1 TD. 3 rushes for 39 yards.

#2 Colt McCoy (San Francisco 49ers): QB#2

There is also good news for Colt McCoy. It was rumored he would be traded, but he has been declared the 49ers backup QB by Jim Harbaugh after the game vs the Vikings. He had a bad first half where he threw an interception (his third of the PS), and also badly missed a wide open receiver on 3rd down. He was better after halftime. He finished the day 11/15 for 109 yards and 1 INT (video), and 3 rushes for 10 yards. Scott Tolzien, his competitor during the preseason, was cut and the 49ers signed free agent Seneca Wallace, who was Colt’s teammate in Cleveland.

  • RBs:

#25 Jamaal Charles (Kansas City Chiefs): RB#1

Status: No risk.

#34 Fozzy Whittaker (San Diego Chargers): 4th stringer & KR #3

Last friday the Pearland product scored his second TD as a pro on a 5 yard-run (video). He is still pushing hard to make the roster and it looks like he may succed as he is having a great preseason. If he doesn’t make the roster, he would likely be signed by another team or be picked up on a Practice Squad which it would be great for him.

Status: On the bubble.

#25 Chris Ogbonnaya (Cleveland Browns): FB #1

Status: No risk.

  • WRs:

#88 Marquise Goodwin (Buffalo Bills): WR2 #2

The former Olympic long jumper once again showed his value as playmaker. This time he accumulated 75 yards on 3 kickoff returns (with a longest one of 31 yards). He also caught a pass for 7 yards. The Bills have already released WRs Da’Rick Rogers and DeMarco Sampson as they are expected to keep 7 WRs for the final 53 man roster. Goodwin of course is a lock.

Status: No risk.

#15 Jordan Shipley (Jacksonville Jaguars): WR2 #3

Jordan Shipley does not have an assured spot on the Jaguars roster. With the cut of WR Jamal Millers, the Jags are down to six wide receivers (+ OW Denard Robinson) and it’s believed that all 6 will make the final roster. He caught a pass for 10 yards and returned a punt for 14. His ability to play on special teams has been crucial for him to be on the final squad.

Status: On the bubble.

  • TE:

#88 Jermichael Finley (Green Bay Packers): TE #1

Status: No risk.

  • OLs:

#76 Tony Hills (Oakland Raiders): RT #2

Hills was released by the Bills last week and signed with the Oakland Raiders last Tuesday. He was working with the second team as RT in his first practices with the Raiders. He is expected to be cut by Saturday.

Status: On the bubble.

#61 David Snow (Buffalo Bills): OC #2

Snow is still on the Bills roster after the first cut. He is still on the bubble and is not on the Buffalo Rumblings’ (Bills SBN blog) final roster prediction.

Status: On the bubble.

#64 Kasey Studdard (Tennessee Titans): LG #3

The big OL is one of the players who is expected to be cut before Saturday. He hasn’t been able to make an impact during the Titans Training camp.

Status: On the bubble.

#72 Jonathan Scott (Chicago Bears): LT #2

Status: No risk.

#63 Justin Blalock (Atlanta Falcons): LG #1

Status: No risk.

#63 Lyle Sendlein (Arizona Cardinals): C #1

Status: Starter.

  • DLs:

#97 Kheeston Randall (Miami Dolphins): DT #2

Status: Backup

#91 Cory Redding (Indianapolis Colts): LDE #1

Status: No risk.

#97 Roy Miller (Jacksonville Jaguars): RDT #1

Status: No risk.

#99 Lamarr Houston (Oakland Raiders): RE #1

Status: No risk.

#73 Brandon Moore (San Diego Chargers): LDE #3

The former JC transfer made the first round of cuts, but he is still expected to be cut before Saturday. He is a rookie so he will be available to sign for a Practice Squad. Already cut, was former former Sooner and fellow UDFA defensive lineman, Jamarkus McFarland.

Status: On the bubble.

#70 Frank Okam (New York Giants): CUT

The DT was cut by the Giants last week.

Status: Free Agent.

#95 Shaun Rogers (New York Giants): RDT #2

Rogers has had a good preseason, but his age and injuries are a problem right now. He is fighting with a much younger player in Marvin Austin for a roster spot. If he doesn’t make the final roster he will have a serious look from other teams, as he can still be a valuable backup.

Status: On the bubble.

#69 Henry Melton (Chicago Bears): DT #1

Status: Starter.

#90 Brian Robison (Minnesota Vikings): LDE #1

Status: Starter.

  • LBs:

# 56 Derrick Johnson (Kansas City Chiefs): RILB #1

Status: No risk.

#53 Emmanuel Acho (Philadelphia Eagles): ILB #3

The ILB is making a great effort to get a final roster spot with the Eagles. The Chip Kelly team already cut Chaney, who was a direct competitor. Right now the Eagles are down to 5 ILBs and the question if they will keep all of them or cut one more. Only Mychal Kendricks and DeMeco Ryans have their spots secured. The other 2 spots will be for Casey Matthews, Jake Knott or Emmanuel Acho.

Status: On the bubble.

#55 Roddrick Muckelroy: CUT

Unfortunately, Muckelroy was one of the two former Longhorns cut. He is hoping to be signed by another team.

Status: Free Agent.

#98 Brian Orakpo (Washington Redskins): OLB #1

Status: No risk.

#52 Keenan Robinson (Washington Redskins): IR

Status: IR

#94 Sam Acho (Arizona Cardinals): SLB #1

#57 Alex Okafor (Arizona Cardinals): SLB #2

#23 Chykie Brown (Baltimore Ravens): RCB #2

Status: No risk.

#29 Michael Huff (Baltimore Ravens): FS #1

Status: No risk.

#31 Curtis Brown (Pittsburgh Steelers): LCB #2

Status: No risk

#33 Michael Griffin (Tennessee Titans): FS #1

Status: No risk

#34 Quentin Jammer (Denver Broncos): FS #3

The veteran player has made the first round of cuts but he is likely to be cut before Saturday.

Status: On the bubble.

#31 Aaron Ross (New York Giants): RCB #2

Status: No risk.

#32 Kenny Vaccaro (New Orleans Saints): S #3

Status: No risk.

#25 Tarell Brown (San Francisco 49ers): RCB #1

Status: No risk.

#29 Earl Thomas (Seattle Seahawks): FS #1

Status: No risk.

  • STs:

#9 Justin Tucker (Baltimore Ravens): K #1

Status: No risk.

#9 Phil Dawson (San Francisco 49ers): K #1

Status: No risk.

#46 Cullen Loeffler (Minnesota Vikings): LS #1

Status: No risk.

  • Bonus Track (Transfers):

#4 GJ Kinne (Philadelphia Eagles): QB #4

The former Tulsa transfer will be cut after Thursday game. The Eagles have already Vick and Foles as numbers 1 and 2 and also Matt Barkley to develop. He is elegible for the Practice Squad, but it’s believed that Kelly will prefer to keep former Duck Dennis Dixon.

Status: On the bubble.

#85 Dan Buckner (Arizona Cardinals): WR #4

The WR hasn’t been cut as he is still battling to make the Cardinals roster after going undrafted last April. The former Arizona Wildcat has played in all 3 preseason games, catching 2 passes for 23 yards.

Status: On the bubble.

#6 Brandon Collins: CUT by the NYG

I totally forgot about Brandon Collins and this is the first time I am including him (thanks Michael). Unfortunately he was cut by the Giants this week.

Status: Free Agent.
