Horns in the NFL: Week 1, making the case for DLU

Time to take a break from our defeat vs BYU and think about happier stuff. The first week of the NFL regular season left us with two clear winners: Kenny Vaccaro and Jamaal Charles and one less impressive performance by Michael Huff, who had a bad game in his debut as a Raven. All the other NFL Horns were somewhere in between.

Vaccaro, the rookie safety for the Saints, was all over the field, leading his team in tackles with seven and a clutch PBU in the endzone on the Falcons last pass (video). This allowed Roman Harper to intercept and sealed the win for the Saints. Meanwhile Jamaal Charles, led the Chiefs in total yards with 99 yards and one TD (video), showing how valuable he is on the Andy Reid offense. Earl Thomas had a good performance too, after making 9 tackles and forced a fumble (video).

We can also consider Fozzy Whittaker a winner after we saw action in his first game as a pro, during the unbelievable Texans comeback over his Chargers. He returned a kickoff for 41 yards late in the last quarter. Jermichael Finley scored a TD (video), but he also tipped a pass that ended up in a 49ers defender's hands (video).

Michael Huff suffered a nightmare game during the season opener last Thursday. He took bad angles, missed tackles and dropped an interception, uncommon mistakes for a player of his quality. Goodwin also had a bad night, fumbling the ball after his only catch during the Bills' loss against the Patriots (video). The speedster didn't get the chance to make any impact on the return game as all the Patriots kick-offs went for touchback.

As expected most of you voted Texas should be known as DBU (124 votes) over DLU (14). I was one of the 14 who voted for DLU and here is why:

Currently there are 10 DBs in the League, from whom we can count 5 as starters: Michael Griffin, Michael Huff, Aaron Williams, Tarell Brown and Earl Thomas, and we could add Kenny Vaccaro to that list. Although he is just a rookie, he will probably earn the starter position during the season. The rest are Chykie Brown, who is now getting more playing time, Curtis Brown who has been disappointing with the Steelers, Aaron Ross who is trying to get back on track and Quentin Jammer, living his last moments as a pro.

In my opinion, only Earl Thomas is among the elite in his position in the League, making the ProBowl the last two years. He is clearly one of the most talented safeties in all the NFL, a place that Vaccaro might reach someday, but not yet.

The DLs who are starting in the NFL are Brian Robison, Cory Redding, Henry Melton, Lamarr Houston and Roy Miller. But I would also add Brian Orakpo and Sam Acho, who are playing as OLBs in the NFL, but both played DE at Texas. Melton and Orakpo are both ProBowlers, and Melton is the highest paid NFL Longhorn, and among the highest paid in the league, on par with his own QB, Jay Cutler, per this article.

Since 2009, NFL teams have drafted seven of our DLs (including OLBs Orakpo and Acho), versus five DBs from Texas. The difference is that 5 of the 7 DLs have currently earned the starter position (Orakpo, Acho, Melton, Houston and Miller), and only 2 of the 5 DBs have done the same (Earl Thomas and Aaron Williams).
