I know this is obvious, but I have to vent my frustrations somewhere. Why do we continue to call designed runs with our QB when we have one of the deepest RB rosters in the country? When Ash was taking big hits early in the 1st quarter last night, I texted a friend and predicted he'd get knocked out of the game. Lo and behold, we dial-up a QB draw and Ash is out the rest of the game. Why?!
It's a huge asset to have a mobile QB like Ash, but the only rushing yards he should be getting is on broken pass plays (which he has done well). The designed runs that call for Ash (or any QB) to run up the middle and get his head taken off have to stop. Designed runs worked for VY because he was shifty enough to avoid big hits. We continued to implement designed runs with Colt and he suffered too many dangerous hits (remember K-State in '06?).
If Tyrone Swoopes is the future, then more designed runs can be implemented, but they HAVE to stop with Ash. We need his arm, not his legs. With a backfield composed of Gray, Brown, and Bergeron, who needs a mobile QB?
Whether Ash is 100% or not, he should NOT start against ISU. We can handle the Cyclones with constant hand-offs from Case and short passes. Save Ash for OU. Applewhite's play-calling in this area is inexcusable.
