Hunger + Development > Talent

In light of the recent Seahawk thrashing of the Denver Mannings, I took a look at Seattle's starting defense to see who these guys were. This group held the best offense in NFL history to one garbage time TD. Here is what that defense looked like coming out of high school.

LBs

Irvin **** LB

Wagner ** LB

Smith **** LB

DLs

Clemons ? (predates rivals)

McDaniels *** DE

Mabene **** DT

Bryant *** DT

DBs

Thomas **** CB

Sherman *** WR

Maxwell **** CB

Chancelor ** QB

These aren't exactly guys who were blue chips that are now dominating NFL offenses. These are guys that had a hunger for success and through toughness and hard work, made themselves to blue chips at the NFL level.

And then I think of how UT was dismantled by a team (BYU) made up of guys who weren't good enough to play for Texas. Then I think about how the Kansas basketball team was dismantled by a UT team made up of guys who weren't good enough to play for KU. Hunger + Development will beat uninspired talent almost every time.

When Charlie Strong said to not pay attention to the star ratings, it seemed like something a coach who doesn't have a top class would say. After all, Nick Saban has dominated the NCAA this last decade and had top classes for most of those years. Is Saban going to suggest we should ignore the star ratings for his players he recruited? So its not just a myth that 5 star = success, right? When looking at Saban's teams, that appears to be the exact formula. But he has been doing something lately that UT has not, development. This is what Charlie was eluding to, developing players who are HUNGRY to get better. Players who have a chip on their shoulder. "Weeding out the weak." Getting players who are serious about getting better. Charlie is a no nonsense coach, as we can glean from the Charlie Rules. Coach Strong's plan is to instill toughness in his players. I like the sound of that. For all the missteps the last few years for the horns, we now have a guy, at the least, has a plan. And he has a conviction about his plan. This is a breath of fresh air after the old coach, despite all the success, had 3 different plans the last 3 years. I like a man who has conviction. Coach Strong told me to ignore the star ratings. As someone who follows recruiting a little too close for my own good, going forward I think I'll try my best to do so, coach.
