'Horns in the NFL: Conference Finals (+Pro Bowl & Senior Bowl)

Sorry for the delay, but these have been hectic days. Here is your last ‘Horns in the NFL recap of the season, where I recap the Longhorns in the Super Bowl, Pro Bowl, Senior Bowl and a new future Chicago Bear with a burnt orange past.

Earl Thomas will be the only Longhorn on the field during the Superbowl this Sunday. His Seahawks defeated the Packers last week in a thriller and earned the chance to win back-to-back SB rings. Despite the fact that he was injured during the game after a hit to his shoulder, he will be on the field on Sunday. He starred in one of the highlights of the night as he caused Eddie Lacy to have to sit down on the bench after being tackled by ET, despite being limited by his own injury.

Former Longhorn transfer Garrett Gilbert will also be there as a member of the New England Patriots Practice Squad. The QB was drafted by the St Louis Rams in the 6th round of the 2014 NFL Draft; he was cut and later signed by the Pats. His dad, Gale Gilbert was also a backup QB in 5 consecutive Super Bowls with the Bills and the Chargers; he lost all of them. Curiously, Gilbert was in the spotlight when he was spotted in an NFL Network tweet and Emmanuel Acho commented on it:

In the Pro Bowl, Jamaal Charles was the only former Longhorn playing. He was a member of Team Carter as he was drafted 5th overall by former NFL legend Cris Carter. The RB, who this year became the player with the most rushing yards in Chiefs' history, ran 25 yards on 4 carries with a longest of 17. Earl Thomas didn't participate as his team will play this week in SB XLIX.

Also of interest, Jordan Hicks and Quandre Diggs played in the Senior Bowl last Saturday. Trying to make it into the league, both helped themselves with a strong week of practice showing their potential. Diggs was able to make an interception which he nearly returned for a TD on a 41-yard-effort, and he also made 4 solo tackles. Meanwhile, Hicks was involved in 5 stops (2 solo and 3 assisted). Both Hicks and Diggs will surely be drafted in April along with Malcom Brown and hopefully Steve Edmond, Malcolm Brown, Jaxon Shipley and John Harris, after no Longhorns were selected in last year's NFL Draft.

In some other good news, former Longhorns QB/WR John Chiles signed a reserve/future contract with the Chicago Bears, the team confirmed on their twitter handle. As I said in my week 15 report, Chiles spent the last two seasons with the Toronto Argonauts, after being cut by the St Louis Rams. He was signed as an Undrafted Free Agent by the New Orleans Saints back in 2011.

PS: Thank you very much to horndude, who has helped me with these recaps all season long. ¡Muchas gracias amigo!
