Murderer's Row

The Texas womens' basketball was also a winner last night, riding a dominating defensive effort to blow out Colorado 68-49, forcing Colorado to a season-high (for both teams) 34 turnovers.  Big XII scoring leader Tiffany Jackson struggled in the first half (0-13, 1-2 from the line) but broke out in the second to score a game-high 16 points, and guards Earnesia Bailey and Carla Cortijo both added double-digit numbers to go along with outstanding defense.

http://texassports.com/index.php?s=&url_channel_id=33&url_article_id=5566&url_subchannel _id=&change_well_id=2

This was Texas' third win in a row, coming off the upset of #10 Purdue and an overtime thriller at Missouri.  These games should be confidence builders for this young team, coming off the inexplicable collapse at home against an average Nebraska team (surrendering a 10-point lead in the last 8 minutes).

While this improved play has fans' hopes up, Texas is about to enter a murderer's row schedule in which the team could conceivably lose seven straight games and twelve of the remaining thirteen games.  The only gimme on the schedule is a home game against Kansas, given that the usually doormat-worthy OSU Cowgirls have shown surprising life this year (14-2 record, 2-1 Big XII).  Should Texas lose even eight of its remaining thirteen games, the team will end up with another disappointing season (18-13, 7-9 Big XII) and would likely miss the NCAA tournament for a second straight year.  This result will lead to howls of protest akin to what Mack Brown heard during his five-year losing streak, and would almost assuredly lead to coaching changes - perhaps not Jody, but surely at least one or two of the assistants.  Worst of all, Texas recruiting would take a serious hit, and one or two current players might even consider transferring.

So call me Chicken Little.  The sky is not falling.  Yet.  But this team has wrenched my burnt-orange heart out so many times the past three years that I'm preparing myself for the worst, and hoping for the best.  With three players out with injuries, Texas is down to a ten-person roster, and only six of those ten have contributed valuable minutes this season.  No matter how talented those six athletes are, that's a lot to expect in the bruising Big XII.

Tiffany Jackson is one of the best players in Texas WBB history, but she is no Kevin Durant.  She can't single-handedly win games for us the way KD has this season.  And her supporting cast is, unfortunately, not as talented as KD's.  For her sake, I hope the team can manage at least a 6-7 split of the remaining games, so Texas can avoid a second consecutive year with a losing Big XII record.  And it makes me sad to think that even that is a stretch goal for this once-proud program.

Star-divide

Murderer's Row:

01.17     WBB     Iowa State      Ames, IA      7:00 pm --- One of the toughest arenas in the Big XII
01.21     WBB     Texas A&M      Austin, TX     2:00 pm --- just upset top-10 Baylor, Texas NEEDS this win at home
01.24     WBB     Baylor            Austin, TX     7:00 pm --- Mulkey out-coaches Jody.  Again.
01.27     WBB     Texas Tech     Lubbock, TX     3:00 pm --- Texas always has trouble in Lubbock, even when Tech is down (as they are this year)
01.31     WBB     Oklahoma       Austin, TX     6:00 pm --- this game will be UGLY, with Dexter's twin sister coming to town
02.03     WBB     Kansas State     Manhattan, KS     4:30 pm --- Horns have always struggled in Manhattan
02.07     WBB     OSU               Stillwater, OK     6:00 pm --- used to be a gimme, not this year
02.10     WBB     Kansas            Austin, TX     5:00 pm --- our only gimme, but they beat us last year
02.12     WBB     Oklahoma       Norman, OK     6:00 pm --- UGLY, part II
02.18     WBB     Baylor             Waco, TX     2:00 pm --- see above
02.21     WBB     OSU                Austin, TX     7:00 pm --- should be a W
02.24     WBB     Texas Tech     Austin, TX     3:00 pm --- should be a W, but they beat us at home last year
02.28     WBB     Texas A&M     College Station, TX     TBA --- Texas will have to pull an upset here to save the season

Your assessment is dead on
While the team is playing better than I expected after Erika was injured, they have yet to hit the intense bulk of their schedule, as you mention. I'm concerned with how many minutes Carla has played the last two games. Averaging almost 40 minutes per game on a still beleaguered knee will no doubt cause her to tire down the stretch of the Big XII. Fatigue can also lead to injury.

The team's defensive intensity has been great the past two games. But, I fear that our lack of a consistent perimeter game that Erika provided will spell trouble for us down the stretch. We did not shoot the 3 ball well against Colorado. Many of our buckets were in or near the paint. That may spell trouble for us against OU, A&M and Baylor.

No One Cares
I'm sorry and you may hate me but no one cares about women's basketball or volleyball. Just like no one cares about the WNBA.

I'don't know if your a woman or man but it doesn't matter. Women's basketball is a joke and when they put that bad basketball on national TV it makes my stomach quench. I'm not a sexist i love women's tennis and golf.

But women's basketball and soccer is just bad and not very skilled. I'm a pretty descent basketball player. I am on my highschool varsity team for the second year in a row. I'm not the star player just the guy that comes of the bench and i average about 8 points a game. Pretty much everybody on the varsity team is better than 95% of all womens basketball players.

There isn't a single guy on the varsity team that will play D1 or D2 (oops i can't all it that anymore).

Sorry to say but please don't post this stuff on here.

Vince Young is a beast.

As a Texas Ex I support all things Longhorn, and I appreciate the time you spent all things Longhorn.

This
Is a Texas Longhorns blog. Covering all Longhorn sports. The people on this blog are what makes it great. If they want to talk about women's sports, let them do so. They didn't drag you into it; you don't have to comment.

Our women's teams are very talented and typically high-ranking (volleyball, soccer, T&F), and the athletes are high caliber, too. I lived next door to Marshevet Hooker during my freshman year summer semester. She is a hell of an athlete. I'd like to see you run an 11-second 100m dash.

I'll admit I don't follow our women's programs religiously, but I am still proud of them. I'll also admit it's pretty boring to watch most women's sports. But they still deserve at least some attention. They certainly don't deserve condescending remarks.

So keep this blog a great community by commenting only on the posts in which you personally are interested.

I don't think this needs to be said, but still
I care as well.  I think many people on this blog care, and I think PHF is one of our most valued bloggist.

And for me personally, I'm even more in the minority because the sport I played competitively and still follow religiously is tennis, so I understand loving a sport that isn't the most popular.

I also just think that's the wrong attitude to have.  Folks should be posting about whatever UT sport they're interested in.  If you don't care about that particular post, don't read it.

So no offense to you, dve, but keep rockin' PHF!

The straw
You know, dhab, I thought you made a nice rebound from the "don't tell me I need to punctuate!" debacle but this nonsense really chaps my hide.

If you run your cursor over a BON-commenters nickname, a number shows up.  Your number is 1024.  That means 1023 other Longhorn fans signed up to comment on this site before you. I don't know the exact details, but that puts you as starting sometime in 2006. Only about 30 comments show up in your history. I just tried to do a similar search for PHF and got to 330 comments/diaries just dating back to last November.

What I'm trying to get at is this: PHF is one of the most valued contributing members of the Burnt Orange Nation and has been as long as I can remember (and I've been lurking since basically the beginning of this site). You are nothing in comparison. You are as welcome as anyone to present your opinion in a positive manner, but as soon as you start telling other people what they should and should not post, you've stepped over the line.

Go start your own blog and see how long it takes you to get 1000+ registered commenters. The BON management has created the best meeting place on the internet for Longhorn-minded fans by being welcoming to all (with the exception of Sooner/Aggie troll-buffoons), inclusive and fair. If you don't like that policy, you can take a hike. Jerk.

So take that.

Thought this
might have something to do with OJ and/or Ray Lewis.

Anyway, dv....... it says on the main page of this site: "A blog dedicated to Texas Longhorns Athletics"  Note how there isn't a distinction between mens and womens athletics, it's just "Longhorn Athletics".  If you don't care about the women's or whatever, then don't read about it, just pass it up.  There's more to life than bball and football, but if that's all you want glory in, then whatever, but could just do everyone a favor here and stop being an outright ass?

Wow
Just wow.

PB has always leapt to my defense in the past, but it's great to realize that there are other BON'ers out there who at least take the time to read my posts about Longhorns Womens' Athletics, even if they don't really care much about the teams, or attend the events in person.

Thanks, guys, for your support both of my contributions to this community and of me specifically.  It warms the cockles of my burnt-orange heart.

heh heh   He said "cockles"   heh heh

I also take comfort in knowing that even the worst player on the WBB team this year could take dvehabovic in a one-on-one.  Doubt he'd even get a point.

"Doubt he'd even get a point."
There it is.

I was waiting for someone to say this.  I love how dvehabovic mentioned his current two year stint on his varsity high school bball team.  I myself started for two years for my high school's varsity (thought I was pretty good too), then got to college, played in a pick up game against 5 girls who I knew to be on the women's bball team and got my ass kicked.

It was a humbling experience, I must admit, and it showed me how well these girls can play the game.  It also gave me an immense amount of respect for them, even though I wasn't particularly a fan.

Keep up the good work PHF, and don't be discouraged by comments like that.  There are those who do enjoy your updates.

Dont forget
they beat you with a different size ball than they usally play with, and they still were probably knocking down shots.

And PHF, I might not read through all of your stuff, but I do like being kept up to date on what is going on.  If I lived in Austin I would come to some volleyball.  Keep up the good work.

Appreciation
I speak for PB, AR, and myself, when I say thanks, PHF, for all that you bring to the blog. The readers have already pointed out that this is a blog dedicated to Longhorn athletics, not just to men's athletics.

While our interests and enthusiasm push us to follow and cover the major sports, that does not mean there is not a place at BON for other coverage. Frankly, PB and I would love to have more sports covered and further our mission to turn BON into a one-stop shop for Longhorn Athletics.

That is where you and other BONers come in. Thanks, PHF, for the volleyball, women's basketball, and other sports coverage that you offer the readers. You are a valuable and respected contributor. Don't let one small minded commenter stop you from posting.

Not to pile on...
Okay, yes, definitely to pile on.

PHF - don't stop. Lots of folks love all the sports we don't have time to cover. We're all fortunate that you're here as the Ultimate Longhorn Fan. The site is 100 times better because of your contributions.

As for the commenter...  well, you're free to READ or NOT READ any post you like. You're not allowed to dictate what others may or may not post.

Ha!

Again, thanks guys.  And thanks to dvehabovic for kicking off this PHF love-fest.

I just found this site...
And it is great. I've always enjoyed reading PHF's posts on Hornfans. There aren't many sites where you can share objective viewpoints about women's athletics. Keep the posts coming, PHF!

You go, PHF!
This is my first post to BON, and I'm glad that it is to support my long-time friend, PHF.  He has enlightened me with his passion for UT women's athletics and made me into a daily BON reader as well.  So while I am at it, thanks to all you guys (gender-neutral term) for an outstanding blog.  Those of us far from hometown Austin really appreciate it!

Big XII Crashes the latest rankings
  1. OU
  2. Baylor
  3. aTm
  4. Texas
  5. KSU
  6. Nebraska
The Big XII still trails the dominant ACC, the SEC, the Big 10 and maybe even the Pac-10 in terms of conference strength though.
