The Finals: Heard v. Pedersen

Burnt Orange Nation - you have spoken. The votes have been tallied, and we've got our finalists for the BON Enemies of the Nation Tournament.

Readers Billyzane and OBdoc commented that Kellen Heard and Eric Pedersen shouldn't be meeting in the finals, while readers oregonlonghorn and abtxutfan noted that Heard meeting Hoge in the semifinals was a "seeding error".

I appreciate both sentiments, but respectfully disagree. And judging by the voting throughout this thing, I think it's pretty clear that Heard and Pederson are the top two enemies of the Nation for 2006. My reasoning in placing them in opposite brackets was that, if my hunch was correct that these two asshats were the worst sinners of the bunch, we'd have ourselves the ultimate question to decide in the finals:

Namely, which is worse? A truly nasty, brutish late hit that injured the hell out of our star quarterback? Or a column from a bitch Aggie columnist glorifying the awful play?

I don't think there's any question that these two deserve their spots in the finals. But I do think it's a hell of an interesting question as to who committed the more unforgivable sin.

I've refrained from leading the audience in these posts by jumping in with my opinion, and I won't start now. It's up to you to decide: who, and which, is worse?

You're all urged to vote, of course, but as interesting a question as this is, I hope you'll also make your case in the comment section below. When the winner is announced on Monday, I'll make known my own thoughts on each and every one of these clowns.

Happy Voting!

Tough One
This is a tough one because it does revolve around one incident. I will have to go with Pederson because he glorified and said that hit showed how "tougher" A&M is.

Heard's hit was cheap and dirty but it happens pretty often. There is usually a cheap shot every couple of games. If he actually inflicted long term damage then definitely but he is just another idiot who makes a bonehead play.

Pederson is worse because not only did he say that but it was published or posted online on a reall newspaper college or not glorifying the act. How stupid are you? Even an OU writer wouldn't say that horrible. Him and McGee are probably love bodies something because i don't how you like a qb that can't complete a pass.

I don't know but when you have trouble throwing the ball then you are not a qb. Its just what i heard. But anyways it has to be Eric Pederson but the enemy of this site specifically not all Longhorn fans has to be Sooner mom and how she defende her son.

I didn't even know that there were computers in Oklahoma. I thought it was an urban legend.

Also i vote for pederson because of how much a fag that he looks like embarrassing. Someone get his email so we can talk trash please. Ridiculous.

Vince Young is a beast.

Please
Please refrain from calling people - even enemies - fags, dvehabovic. BON is an open forum with readers of every stripe. Offensive language like that simply won't fly.

We insist that the discourse here remain above the nastiness that this very tournament seeks to call out.

Thanks.

Heard or Pederson
Easy for me....

Heard's discretion was influenced by the heat of the battle.

Pederson's discretion was the latent drivel of an idiot with a keyboard.

Pederson wins....

Can't Have Pederson...
...without having Heard first. My vote was for Heard.

by Longhorn13 on Jan 18, 2007 9:36 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

after i said that
I did think about the potential for a real philosophical question in the final between heard and pedersen.  So while I think it's not ideal that they meet in the finals, I do like the conundrum it presents.  Though I guess that conundrum could've happened earlier in the bracket, but whatever.  It is what it is.

There's an argument for Pedersen, namely that what Heard did can partially be excused because football is a game of passion and violence and Heard could've just gotten too caught up in the moment and done something stupid and hurtful.  But Pedersen had plenty of time to collect his thoughts (not to mention look in the mirror) and write something coherent and moderately intelligent.  But he didn't.

But I'm voting for Heard because what he did ultimately makes him more our enemy than Pedersen.  Calling Pedersen the enemy of the nation is like calling Brazos the enemy of the nation.  He's a douche, but he's just a flame-thrower.  He's a moron who everyone agrees is a moron.  The retarded kid in the corner of the room is not my enemy.

I also think it's an interesting question
and I said so a while back:

http://burntorangenation.com/comments/2007/1/17/145329/532/11#11

And having thought about it, I'll still go with Heard.

I was tempted
I was so tempted to respond to that comment, boom, but I resisted to wait for the finals.

Obviously, we're in agreement: this is the most interesting question.

And, really, let's face it. Even had these two clowns met in the semifinals, the winner would have won the finals. I think it really is appropriate that these bitches meet in the finals.

I loathe them both immensely.

No problem
No problem, i will stop useing that word from now on.

I'm surprised no one's quoted Obi:
"Who's more foolish, the fool or the fool that follows him?"

If the latter (Pedersen), "the greater fool" is at odds with "enemy," which brings with it the idea of "respect for one's opponent," i.e., no one respects the greater fool.

I think billyzane is on the right track when he notes that Pedersen isn't worthy of the respect that "enemyhood" brings. But then again, none of these bitches are (in the way that, say, OU as a program certainly is).

That said, I don't think we as a community can let Pedersen win, if only because you know he's going to wear that shit as a badge of honor.

by a0nyme on Jan 18, 2007 11:41 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Agree with Billy and a0nyme
This is a tough one for me as well.  It's hard for me to even imagine someone like Pederson trying to justify what Heard did when it was so obviously reprehensible.  But what a0nyme said about him wearing it as a badge of honor holds true for me.  I think he was doing it simply to get a rise out of Longhorns.  Does that make him even more of an enemy?  Probably.  But what it definitely does is make him a loser douche who most reasonable people won't take seriously.

Heard, on the other hand, actually, physically hurt one of our players in an extraordinarily cowardly and malicious manner.  This to me makes him the greater enemy.

Pederson's a waste of air who tries to appeal to the dregs of society.  Heard's a gargoyle who eats babies and plays poker every Friday with Merrill Hoge, Sooner Mom, and Perriloser.

by hornbone on Jan 19, 2007 1:53 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

you guys are right
if pederson found out about being a longhorn enemy of the nation, he'd probably feel good about himself and try to get high fives from his buddies. it just seems like he's the kind of turd who'd do that. i don't want to give him that satisfaction.

heard could do it too, but at least we can get the satisfaction of redemption next year on the field.

by greenman on Jan 19, 2007 7:55 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Pedersen, Hands Down
Heard's vicious hit reminded me of when Warren Sapp blindsided Chad Clifton of the Packers after Favre threw a pick.  It was one of those hits where every fan, both Green Bay and Oakland's went "Dude, that was pretty messed up." Pedersen's column is akin to someone standing in DKR yelling "Way to hit that bitch Heard!" Immediately after Colt got leveled, looking for high fives from his A&M buddies who would be, at the moment, ashamed to be in his presence.  Of course, he is an internet columnist, so the only place he would do this is in the comfort of his own home.  Screw Kellen Heard, but DAMN Eric Pedersen.  He is the Enemy of the Nation.
Hey Boise State fans, no pictures of crying OU kids on your fanblog ok?

by bendj on Jan 19, 2007 6:38 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

I voted Pedersen.
Like some readers have commented.  Heard's hit, as much of a cheap shot as it was, happens pretty often in college football.  I'm sure some of our players have done that in the past before, but we don't go around glorifying it using it as a basis for a "We're tougher" argument.

When i watch the footage of his
hit on Colt, i don't see someone who is caught up in the passion of the game, i see someone who hesitates for a moment, probably weighs the consequences of his action, and then proceeds to blindside our quarterback at full speed after the play has clearly finished. Now if he had layed a viscious late hit on  a lineman or running back, someone who he might be pissed off at for dominating him in other words, then i think the passion argument could be made. The fact is that Heard made a cowardly effort to take our quarterback out of the game with a cheap shot. Pedersen merely believed what they told him at fish camp and acted like as much of an idiot as he looks. Can't blame the guy for being intellectually sterile.

So that's why
i voted for heard.

I think it's gotta be Pedersen
This guy's way more "Enemy of the Nation" material.

A repulsive as Heard's hit was, it was committed in the heat of battle against a hated rival.

Pedersen taking glee in said repulsive hit, then defending the hit from any angle he could is just unforgivable.

by orangeblood1 on Jan 19, 2007 10:55 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

Me too
Put me down for Pederson. Heard will graduate (or not) and disappear, remembered only for this shameful act. Pederson will continue to spout bilge like this, so he is the greater enemy.

by Caradoc on Jan 19, 2007 11:36 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

It has to Heard
I think to be an enemy of the state you should take into account who hurt the Longhorns more.  To me that would be Heard because if that hit hadnt taken place the Longhorns most likely would of play for the Big 12 Championship game and in turns would of allowed them to play in a bigger bowl game.

by bkrasso on Jan 19, 2007 11:10 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

I may be wrong....
but didn't the hit come after he threw an interception which pretty much ended our last chance to win the game?  I believe Snead came in and threw the final interception but by then the game was pretty much lost.  I don't think the hit cost us the game or anything else beyond that.

nah, we got the ball back after that
with like a minute and a half left.  it would have been hard to get a touchdown, but not impossible.  colt tried to go it again, but then that borderline roughing the passer knocked him out for good.  then snead came in and threw the interception that really ended the game.

by billyzane on Jan 19, 2007 3:10 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

they're both douchebags...
... but one did actual damage.  The other one just yapped about it.  So, I'm going with the one on the field.

Kind of like a really retarded pit bull is worse than a really stupid lap dog, although both are just worthless bitches...

Wow, i was swayed at least 6 times throughout
I am still going to say this one is too close to call but alas i have to vote.

I hear all the comments about "heat of battle", "hated rival", and cant help but think, at some point you have to know restraint.  Im not talking about restraint in the sense of not playing hard.  Im talking about knowing that he could have knocked McCoy down without flattening him. Heard knew what was he was going to do, he knew he had an opportunity to lay a lick on McCoy and he had to know the play was over. He also knew the hit COULD re-injure McCoy. This all leads me to believe that the hit was meant to end the game for McCoy.

I also hear all the comments about glorifying the act.  But i also view the glorification as idiotic notions of a weak little punk who has no right talking about toughness standing on the sidelines or sitting in front of a computer screen. Unless hes stepped on the field of battle and been leveled like that he should keep his damn mouth shut.  I know its his job to write but if hes going to write about a thing like toughness he needs to posess the attribute hes writing about.  Much like many of the people who write sports or comment on sports in the media.

But i come to my final thought.  If anyone is going to wear this like a badge of honor he better deserve it.  Id rather Heard get the "honor" of being our enemy than a little punk who doesnt deserve to have an audience, much less bear the weight of BON's hatred.

Heard is the bigger Douchebag both literally and figuratively.

PLEASE.....
Post side-by-side pictures of Pedersen and Crying Sooner Kid in a permanent, easy to access spot on this site so I can look at them and realize my life could always be worse.  Who's with me on this???

tough decision/ great discussion
The argument seems to boil down to: do you consider Heard's attack worse because it potentially could have caused physical trauma, or is Pedersen's worse because it wasn't done in the "heat of battle" and he had time to consider what he was saying?  I think Pedersen's is the greater sin against the "nation" for that reason.  However, I would be happy to see co-winners, since this all came out of the same incident.  Maybe put Heard's head on Pedersen's body, or vice versa.  By the way, did either apologize?  To me, that might sway my vote since it is so close.

I know Fran issued an apology
I dont know if he apologized on behalf of Heard or let him do it himself.

Pedersons bitch a$$ would never issue and apology.  Dont ask me how i know.  He just looks like a little punk that would still try to convice us that Heards hit was legit(insert MC Hammer reference here).

I bet if he knew (i hope he does) that we were running this he would more than likely write something else about it, or about this site.  If that happened id like to change my vote.
