Merrill Hoge again

He says he would have voted for Reggie Bush if he had a vote.  I just don't understand what is wrong with him.  Bush's numbers were far from spectacular and I don't think I have to break down the case for VY here :)

My favorite quote
"I see every snap of every game of every player"

16 games a week, that is, assuming 3.5 hours per game,  56 hours a week.  Merill Hoge is a busy man.

I just love it
when people make up blatent lies to defend thier position.  Hodge is backed into a corner now and is just throwing out lies to make up for his stupidity.  Soon he is going to try to attack Vince's character (sp?) (why do I even add this when I know I a misspelling most of the other words in my post?)

Blatant lies
"I will not be the Head Coach of Alabama"

"I did not have sex with that woman - Ms Lewinski"

"I did not take steroids - period!"

Listening to Mike and Mike this morning?

You got it!
They gave VY some serious love, after being big doubters in the pre-season.

Damn early morning meetings!
I usually try to tune in, but I've been going to work too early. I guess I'll go the podcast route.

I saw like 30 seconds of them this morning and Golic was in a serious funk after the ND game last night.

They both had big time doubts about VY.

Your assumptions are off
He'd have access to the non-commercial tapes, so that'd be 2 hours (assuming he pays attention to the penalties and whatnot).  However, to claim to know as much as he does, he'd also have to watch most plays 3 or 4 times to see just half of what he claims to see.  So, that's 4 * 2 * 16 for a grand total of: 128 hours in a week, leaving him just 40 hours a week to sleep, eat, travel, suck, and make an ass of himself on national tv.

He is a VERY busy man who apparently does a lot of Meth.

by Hornbud on Jan 4, 2007 10:05 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Luckily
He can make an ass of himself in less TV time than most announcers use to say their name.

by Wells on Jan 4, 2007 10:07 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I'm not sure the math is possible
because Hoge sucks at least 40 hours a week.
So take that.

Vote for Bush?
Since he lost all credibility weeks ago with his anti-VY stance, this really is no surprise.  But allow me to use his logic to prove why Bush would still be the wrong choice even if Vince never played this year (quote from the link Jimmy provided):

"Watching Reggie Bush play three different positions -- impacting games as a wide receiver, a running back and on special teams -- to me, he had a much better rookie year than Vince Young did.''

Maurice Drew may not have played WR, but he sure was more valuable as an RB and kick returner (stats from ESPN.com).

Bush
Rushing: 155 ATT for 565yds (3.6 AVG; 6 TD; 2 FUM)
Receiving: 88 REC for 742yds (8.4 AVG; 2 TD; 0 FUM)
Punt Returns: 28 for 216yds (7.71 AVG; 1 TD)

Drew
Rushing: 166 ATT for 941yds (5.7 AVG; 13 TD; 1 FUM)
Receiving: 46 REC for 436yds (9.5 AVG; 2 TD; 0 FUM)
Kick-off Returns: 31 for 860yds (27.74 AVG; 1 TD)

Bush ranks 25th in average punt return yards, while Drew ranks 3rd in kick-off return yards.  When considering their rushing and receiving stats, Drew has better averages, more TDs, and fewer fumbles per touch.

Exactly
You could vote for MJD or Marcus McNeil and not be accused of being an idiot.

Merril has a reputation to uphold, though.

Bush isn't even the best rookie on the Saints
Hello Marques Colston, who might edge out Vince for value of pick, having gone in the 7th round.

by aorist9 on Jan 4, 2007 10:46 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

True
However, since Colston missed two games and his production dropped off somewhat after his return I personally wouldn't consider him in the running.  Colston's value based on draft position was unmatched this season, but Vince impressed me as an overall #1...err...I mean #3 pick.

Establish an award
Call it the "Trev Alberts Award" for the most idiotic ESPN talking head.  Though it would be a tossup this year between Hoge and Desmond Howard.  And does Andre Ware work for ESPN?

Ware
Yes he works for Mother Mouse Ear, I mean ABC/ESPN.  Please tell me you haven't forgotten Ware giving the Heisman to the K-State QB, Josh Freeman, the night he beat Texas single handed?

As a Saints fan
I feel that I must say something about this.  First, let me say that Vince is the man and he is the obvious choice for ROY in addition to probably being able to levitate and walk on water if he really applied himself.

That being said, you cannot measure Bush's impact on the Saints by numbers alone.  He was a huge linchpin for their offense and in a very real way, the offense revolved around him.  For about six games, even though he wasn't doing too much, defense would just about jump out of their skins when Brees would so much as look at him, opening up big opportunities for Colston and others.

by SaintBevo on Jan 4, 2007 6:44 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I agree to a point
Bush was a cornerstone to that offense and helped to open up the offense for his teammates.  However, Bush did not capitalize on his touches as efficiently as Drew did; plus, Drew consistently made more critical big plays.

by blackdog81 on Jan 5, 2007 6:24 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

but that was always the case
Over the 2004 and 2005 seasons, SC tended to use LenDale White for the hard yards -- he had the same sort of pounding running style as Drew-Jones, but since he's the better part of 6' - 6'2", White didn't need to hide behind a lineman -- he just ran with linebackers holding on and flapping in the slipstream. The general read was that slow defenses got to watch Bush streaking away, and fast defenses got knocked on their ass by White.

I've watched a few Saints games over the course of the season and it seems like Bush has become more productive as they have found ways to get him a chance against faster NFL defenses -- a lot of short passes to get him the ball once he's already moving, which is the root of his high receiving yards for someone who's technically a running back.

And as SaintBevo pointed out, he's a great decoy... just look at what happened in last year's Rose Bowl on 4th & 2 and game when SC lined up White for a run up the middle and Huff didn't have to account for Bush.

by DC Trojan on Jan 5, 2007 10:00 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Again, I agree to a point
It's true that White received most of the "hard" hitting carries, but not always.  Last year's Hawaii game comes to mind where Bush took some of the goal line ones.

Reggie ran significantly better the past few games and I believe it is attributable to adjusting his style for the pro game.  He's obviously a great player, and served as a great decoy.  If there were a Most Valuable Decoy award then he would get it hands down; however, the award is for the offensive rookie of the year and Bush simply did not capitalize on his opportunities (yards-per-carry; yards-per-catch; etc) as well as Maurice did.

I guess that's both the beauty and the bane of awards based on opinions.  I still believe Bush deserved the Heisman over VY while 99% of BON posters disagree.

by blackdog81 on Jan 5, 2007 12:07 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

My problem
is that most of the voters said that Reggie just meant more to his team which, having seen the team's attitude since he left (which is good but not the same) Vince was HUUUUUGE not only in his play making ability but his personailty. I have a problem with the way most people voted for Reggie saying he was more of a threat and meant more to his team

loved this tidbit:
We thought it was just a good day for Young because he won the ROY but that is just the tip of the iceberg.  He reached a $4.1 million incentive for taking at least 35% of the team's snaps and a $1.5 million incentive for being named ROY.  All and all it wasn't a bad day for Mr. Young.

Wow, maybe he can buy Hoge a brain.
