#8 Texas Hosts Texas Southern
The #8 Longhorns (5-0) are back in action tonight at the Erwin Center as they take on the Texas Southern Tigers (1-4) in their final tune up before Sunday’s match up with #1 UCLA. This one will be over quickly, so do what you’ve got to do to make the 7 PM tip. The game will not be televised but will be broadcast on KVET 98.1 FM & The Zone 1300 AM.
These two teams hooked up exactly this time last year for their first ever meeting. The Horns dominated the Tigers, 90-50, behind double digit scoring from Kevin Durant, AJ Abrams, and DJ Augustin.
If last year’s game wasn’t one-sided enough for you, tonight’s game could be worse. The Tigers enter this one on a four-game losing streak with their most recent disappointment coming at the hands of Billie Clyde Gillespie’s Wildcats, 83-35, last Saturday. Conversely, the Longhorns enter tonight’s contest on five game winning streak and, as we all celebrated, recently claimed the inaugural Legend’s Classic tourney title. Texas Southern is picked to finish at or near the bottom of the SWAC conference this year and hasn’t made the NCAA tourney since 2003, while the Longhorns were picked pre-season to finish at or near the top of the Big 12 conference and haven’t missed the NCAAs since the year before Rick Barnes arrived in Austin.
Further, the Tigers haven’t played a true home game this season, while the Horns have yet to play a true road game. Then, we have the height advantage. The Tigers have just two players taller than 6-3 and one of them, 6-6 Jacques Jones, who is also their best player, hasn’t played at all in their last two games. Last, the Tigers are currently ranked as the 271st best team in Division I by Ken Pomeroy, and the Horns are now ranked as the nation’s second best team.
Ken Pomeroy
Not surprisingly, the scouting report for Texas Southern via Pomeroy details a very bad team on both ends of the floor. The Tigers rank 250th in adjusted offensive efficiency and 264th in adjusted defensive efficiency. Among the many glaring numbers are the rebounding numbers for Texas Southern. The Tigers are terrible at securing offensive rebounds (320th in the country) and almost as bad at keeping their opponents off the offensive glass (304th in the country). Of course, these numbers aren’t that surprising given the heights of the Tiger starters. Even though Gary Johnson has still not been cleared to play, the Longhorns should have a field day this evening on the glass.
As mentioned by PB in the UCLA First Look, Pomeroy’s stats on the Longhorns reveal the most efficient offensive club in the country. The Horns have an amazing effective field goal percentage, which weights two and three point field goal percentages, of 65.7%, which is also the country’s best. Rick Barnes’s club is also doing a fantastic job protecting the ball and has the third lowest turnover percentage in the country.
The defensive numbers are solid but not outstanding. The Horns have had some difficulty keeping opponents off the offensive glass, have had trouble creating turnovers with pressure defense, and haven’t been able to defend the three-ball well this season, or last for that matter. Even with those warts, the Horns are still rated as the 44th best defensive club in the country.
Keys to the Game:
Show up. Execute. Stay Healthy.
Overall, Texas Southern is very small and very thin. If this one isn’t completely out of hand by halftime, it will only be because the Horns aren’t focused and could be looking ahead to the Bruins. Otherwise, the Longhorns should roll easily. Tonight is an excellent opportunity to play freshman Clint Chapman and Alexis "Wing Man" Wangmene for extended minutes and for DJ Augustin and AJ Abrams to rest. Bring on the Bruins!

What is the over under
on points by Ian Mooney?
I say he breaks into double digits for the first time this year: 10 points.

You can laugh about Mooney
But seriously, Harrison Smith's PT has been way worse. After the Arkansas-Monticello game had gotten well out of hand, a bunch of us started chanting for Harrison Smith. A minute later, Barnes put him in. It was like he had totally forgotten about him until we started yelling "Harrison."
If that guy doesn't transfer before the end of the season I would be really surprised.

and even then
I swear Barnes told him "just go stand in the corner."

What happened to that guy?
Mooney is a walk on, but Harrison Smith came in last year with big expectations.
Speaking of him, TexasSports basketball page is featuring a puff piece on him:

Harrison
In my opinion, Harrison doesn't have a position. He doesn't have the ball skills to be a point guard, can't shoot well enough to play the 2, and doesn't defend or rebound well enough to be an underesized 3.
He was a prolific scorer in Houston high school ball but hasn't shown anything to warrant more playing time in any of the games this season or last.
With AJ and Mason coming back for sure, Balbay being healthy, J'Covan Brown coming in the fall, and hopefully Tyreke Evans as well, I really can't see Smith getting any more playing time next year either.
It wouldn't shock me to see Smith go the way of Dion Dowell after this season, if not sooner.

Happy Birthday
Happy 30th Birthday, Frank Erwin Center
The home of the Longhorns, the Frank Erwin Center, officially turns 30 years old on Thursday, Nov. 29. The 16,755-seat arena was an instant hit, as the Horns defeated Oklahoma 83-76 on opening day (Nov. 29, 1977) and went on that year to claim the NIT Championship. Texas began its stint at the Erwin Center with 25 straight wins before dropping a 68-58 decision to No. 14 Arkansas on Feb. 1, 1979. Wednesday's game against Texas Southern will include a short half-time ceremony complete with a birthday cake.
I wonder if there will be enough for the 16,755 on hand? Yummy.

Big men minutes
Could you evaluate the relative merits of Hill, Pittman, Wangmene, and Chapman? It seemed to me last year that Pittman had more potential than Hill. Are any of those guys going to get serious minutes on a regular basis this season?
BTW, you guys are doing a tremendous job on the runnin horns.

Tonight
Since I can't attend the game tonight, I'll spend some time on that. It's a good question, and a pretty important one. Rick didn't go "Jumbo" very often last year, but I recall a few games where he toyed with it - Nebraska comes to mind.

Briefly,
Hill is still out with a foot injury. He hasn't played at all this season. Not sure when he'll be healthy. Love the hair but can't see him earning much time once he does get healthy. The other three guys are simply more talented. He does add a big body though.
Pittman's minutes depend on the style of the game. I love his soft hands and softer touch but getting up and down the floor with this team is difficult for Sexy Dex. He will be a valuable asset against certain teams in conference play who prefer to slow down the tempo.
Wangmene is a bride-like wing span of raw talent. He, too, has excellent hands and secures almost every rebound near him. Alexis has alreday shown a tremendous ability to rebound out of his area. This is a skill that no one else on the team posesses.
Chapman will be solid, just not this year. He can run the floor well, has good high post skills, and has a tremendous bball IQ. That said, he needs more work defensively and really needs 20 lbs on muscle. Bring on Todd Wright.
Wangmeme and Chapman will get regular minutes for sure. Probably 15 and 10. Pittman could get 10 in some games and 20 in others. Hard to see Hill jumping in much at all, healthy or not. There has been some talk of a medical redshirt. We'll see..

I can imagine a bride with a pretty wide span.

Hill
I think we should medical redshirt him. He'll be a good player if he ever gets past his injuries.
We "experimented" a little bit during the first half of the game tonight, feeding the ball to Wangmene in the post several times in a row and Connor trying hook shots. Obviously neither of those will be options against high caliber teams this year, and it shows as we had only a 7 point lead at the half.

Tickets via UT's Ticketmarketplace
I haven't seen this posted anywhere on here.
UT has started this program to market unused tickets. They can't be sold above face value and YOU (as opposed to some lame operator or computer program) get to pick your seats. Maybe this will help with some of the empty seats down in the arena.

I swear to God...
This is the second big surprise to me (the Gregory midnight madness thing being another) from the men's hoops team this year. They've got some good ideas, but for crying out loud, let us know about them somehow.

They are dropping the ball
The basketball program and the Texas box office are seriously slacking in their publicity around campus. Apparently the Stampede is still an ongoing thing this year, but no one told me about it!! I thought the box office would send out a mass email saying "get your stampede ticket package today before they sell out!" Well it would have been nice to get that email. A couple of my friends did, but I know another who didn't. And it pisses me of royally. I was a proud Stampede member last season and was looking forward to it even more this year.
Fuck the texas box office.

word
Last year I got totally screwed out of Stampede because I didn't get an email. Some people did, some people didn't. I didn't get an email AGAIN this year, but had a heads up on when to buy it from a friend.
I feel for you man, it totally blew having to wait outside the ozone until 15 minutes before the game. Hopefully you can find a way around it by way of saved seats.

Well..
The athletic department/Longhorn Foundation is definitely email challenged. Sometimes I get notices about my season tickets sometimes I don't.
However, we need to accept the fact it is best to pull the information you want from UT not expect them to push it to you. It's just too much to ask of them, unfortunatetly. In addition to going to BON everyday I stop by texassports.com. That is how I found out about the ticket marketplace.
