Will Mack 'Applewhite' Colt?

Let's face it, the 'Horns just are not that good right now. It's as simple as that.

Yes. They will improve (they must improve). In doing so, they will have a shot at a major bowl (perhaps a BCS bowl with major improvement).

No team with one (1) back-up true-freshman quarterback is MNC material. No team with holes in its defense is MNC material. No team with three (3) true freshmen back-ups in the offensive line is MNC material (unless those freshman are all world-beaters, which is doubtful).

However, if the offense sputters (especially in the red-zone) against stronger opponents, and 'Horn fans (some of whom feel as though they are entitled to win every football game Texas plays) become restless and demand more offensive production, will Mack pull an 'Applewhite' on Colt?

Star-divide

If you think this question is far-fetched, check-out this blip from the AAS on 09/07/07. The writing is on the wall...

The next Vince?

Texas freshman quarterback John Chiles has yet to play a down, but he's already drawing impossible-to-live-up-to comparisons to Vince Young. The latest came Thursday from Cleve Bryant, Mack Brown's right-hand man for operations, in a speech to the Austin Longhorn Club on Thursday.

"John Chiles, in my opinion, is ahead of where Vince Young was as a freshman," Bryant said.

Of course, Vince didn't play his freshman year. He redshirted. And Chiles, who was elevated to Colt McCoy's primary backup after Harris was injured in preseason drills, did not play last week against Arkansas State.

"He's really making progress," Bryant said of Chiles. "He will make some contributions before the end of the season."

what exactly does this have to do with ability to win a national championship?  texas won a national championship with MATT NORDGREN as the backup and a walk-on as the third string.  i don't care how many years nordgren was in the program (and it felt like 8), chiles and harris are already better than he ever was or ever will be.

Florida

I'm pretty sure Tim Tebow was a back-up true freshman quarterback.

by Texas Wahoo on Sep 16, 2007 2:37 PM CDT up reply actions

True...

However, in Florida's case, the starter remained healthy for the year, and Tebow was ready to take the reins if the starter went down.

McCoy plays like he is less than 100%. If McCoy goes down, who is ready to take the reins?

Further, Florida's O-line, and defense performed a bit better in 2006 than the 'Horns have performed thus far in 2007.

Seriously

Why would you use Chuck Whitman as your sign-in name?

I don't believe the moratorium regarding jokes about this tragedy will ever be lifted in the Longhorn community.

ummm...everything...

...when / if your starting quarterback gets hurt (think 'horns, McCoy, 2006).

...when your starting quarterback plays like he is not 100%, one back-up injured, and the other back-up was playing on a high school football field at this time last year (think McCoy, Harris, Chiles, 2007).

I agree that Nordgren was not a great (or perhaps even good) quaraterback. However, the 'horns won the MNC with VY as the starter (and he was certainly 100% at the time).

no, it has nothing to do with it

you're just contradicting yourself now.  right here, you're admitting that the backup QB in 2005 had nothing to do with winning a national championship.  if the starter stays healthy, it has nothing to do with it.

if the starter gets hurt....when was the last time a backup quarterback won a national championship after the starter got hurt?  it doesn't happen because there's a reason they're backups.

i don't care who your backup is; if your starter gets hurt, you're probably not going to win the national championship.  but hey, if you want to believe that we would have won the national championship last year if 9th-year senior matt nordgren had been our backup instead of jevan snead simply because he "knew the offense" and had gotten reps in a bunch of games over the years, be my guest.

it is stupid

I read about that though and thought it was  something that Mack should get on to Cleve about.

You have to clear this thing

Is your name really "Chuck Whitman"? If not, you gotta be banned from this site.  I'm trying to learn to handle people cussing Mack, but this is way beyond that.

Who was that guy who used to create new accounts? dhab? Someone gotta check.

Even if your name is Chuck Whitman, dude, use another name for a longhorn community.

Go Horns, Go Vince, Go Mavs

I agree

Seeing that name makes this site harder to read.

by Bob LaBlog on Sep 16, 2007 8:04 PM CDT up reply actions

Now that I think about it

There is no way in hell that your name is Charles Whitman. If you are younger than 40 years old, it's too obvious that no Whitmans would name their kid Charles.  Even if you are older than 40, you had 40 years to change your name.  There is no doubt in my mind that a longhorn fan would have done that long time ago.

Now, I'm almost sure that you are just insulting us, or maybe you are just stupid.

Go Horns, Go Vince, Go Mavs

This is the most rediculous non-statistic ever

Pinning your title hopes on your back up QB?  That is just rediculous.  As others have said, if you have an injury to a major cog in either your defense, or offense, you probably aren't going to have a shot at a title, no matter who you have as your backup.
I will agree that the O-line is young this year, and needs to improve.  A strong O-line (and conversely and inexperienced one) is extremely undervalued by the talking heads who try to prognosticate rankings.
Note:  I also support banning you from the site.  You choice of log-in names is as tasteless and classless as they come.
