Second Half Open Thread
Um, this is not going well. 24-14 KSU, McCoy out of the game, and we're getting outcoached and outplayed in embarrassing fashion.
We'll need a big turnaround or this is over.

Just need to
take a deep breath and make some halftime adjustments. Only being down 10 and getting the ball we can run our normal O (or as normal as it gets with Chiles) and get back in it. No more 85 yard returns, pick 6's etc and we'll be ok.
Let Vince do the halftime peptalk!
I just put on a shirt.
Hope it works this week.
i am incrediby embarassed
watching this team play. The coaches should be ashamed of themselves. This is an absolute travesty. Since when did we have to start worrying about beatin KState at home? Tough times ahead boys. I also say that Chiles wins this game and the starting spot is his. This is a cruel world and McCoy has not been impressive this year. At least GD can now run the zone read.
by kicker @ Burnt Orange Nation on Sep 29, 2007 4:16 PM CDT reply actions
A coach would say this:
KSU has played well, minimized their mistakes and penalties and have played within themselves. They have played to nearly as good as they can.
Texas played well on the opening series and except for Quan's catch, haven't played offense or defense well since then.
Texas can play much, much better.
And, yeah, they were going after McCoy. So would we in that situation. Colt was vulnerable and they got him.
It's not just Chiles who must step up, it's the whole team. Everyone, all the time. Attack, attack, attack.
Next Week
Can't we just cancel the OU game like we did against Hawaii a few years ago?
well,
at least we didn't lose to colorodo...

10 points off turnovers
and a special teams TD.
captain obvious says, we need to eliminate the turnovers, go back to the defense we were playing between the 1st and last KSU series, and we should be able to put up enough points to win. keep digging the hole deeper, and we're in trouble.
Changed Shirts
And shorts, and shoes, hat, and coozie. All new burnt orange now. We're good now. all good.
only down by 10
Texas has become a 2nd half team this whole season. I'm sure they will turn it around after the half. VY is there and will give them a nice pep talk. Colt just looks a little shook up. If colt doesn't come back I hope Chiles can throw.
by RemiMagnus on Sep 29, 2007 4:25 PM CDT reply actions
Not too late.
The first drive of the 2nd half is critical to Chiles and this team having a real chance to win though.

I don't want to say anything boys......
But with OU & West Virginia going down....if things work out on the West Coast....and our team sucks it up....

not too late indeed...
we'll get the ball to start the half, and with a score of any type, we cut the lead to a one score game.
and as long as everybody is changing their t-shirts, the tide should definitely be in our favor. keep your heads up. We're Texas.

The INT return and kickoff return and last INT ALL happened when everybody kept flipping back to see the OU game
that's very true...
i feel partly responsible. i just couldn't contain myself. not much makes me happier than seeing ou(sucks) lose to a non ranked team.

The rain
Usually favors an offense with speed. With Chiles, we should be fine as long as he doesn't turn the ball over.

Never say die...
We just need to come out and eliminate the pick 6 stuff and special teams touchdowns, and we're fine. K-State's offense has not looked that awesome we can win this game we just need to get it on... with spurs baby.
This makes no sense
Given the weather, Colt's injury, and Colt's struggles - why not play Chiles?

Tow strong third downs. That definitely helps.
Nice run

I don't think he was ever hurt. From what it seems, his own helmet kinda of got him dazed from the fall, but he's OK now.

This is pretty pitiful.
It's an old, tired offense.
Predictable as the day is long. It's a long way from the shiny vehicles out there.

Let's hope so.
Those three recoveries on third-and-long show a lot of determination to win on both Colt's and the team's part. KSU isn't laying down; they're playing about as good as they can play.
one very encouraging sign..
is to see J Charles putting that 2nd hand over the ball in the red zone.

Oh well,
If we can hold them to another FG, we can still take the lead with a TD.
I did like the backwards pass to Chiles though. That brings a new dimension. Note how wide open Oggy was. Next time, we could fake that throw and Colt could run or pass to an open receiver.

I can't remember the last time a player had a game like he is having at DKR.

That's exactly the point. "There's always next year" is a concession statement. With their play today, that's what Texas is saying, no matter how much wishwash they spit out during the postgame beatdown.
Good thing we brought in MacDuff

Get Colt out. He's fried.
We may need three scores just to get back in the game.
No offense to him. It just ain't workin' today.
They need some energy. Bet they regret not playing Chiles earlier in the season. They're stuck like a bug in a repeat scenario from last year. And frankly, there's no excuse for it.
Screw punting and kicking off ...
F-ing start going for it on every 4th down (even though we've found zero offensive identity) and onside kick the ball should we miraculously score again.
OU may have lost, but they are going to pummel us next week. Get ready to fall out of the Top 25 and be irrelevant for the first time in a long time guys ...

Defensive scheme
Watch that replay again - their D-line was hanging back on purpose.
by blackdog81 on Sep 29, 2007 5:20 PM CDT up reply actions
Hi there
My name is Bobino. I overrun punt returns and get swallowed up on every defensive play, especially when I'm trying to blitz.
Hey there
Yeah, I'm staring right at you for two or three seconds. My name's Colt, and if you're defending against me, just watch my eyes as they lock in on my receivers. Sure, I'll complete a sweet broken play here and there, but overall, I'm just not the same.
I think someone
said it best earlier, Colt can make a team decent, but they will never be dominant. Get Chiles in there and get him some work for next week. If our Offense makes K-States D look this good can you imagine what OU is gonna do to us.
And to think that VY is watching this horseshit..
He must be embarrassed. A loss and no chance for MNC.

Turnovers and special teams.

Don't look at us
We're embarrassed, too, but you can't lay the finger on us. We're the freshmen and RS freshmen. Luckily, our coaches protect us from the playing field and stifle our potential...until after the first loss of course.
This is un-f'ing-acceptable
Home game - revenge game - and to be outplayed, outcoached, outmuscled like this is embarrassing. I love Mack, but something's got to be done after this debacle.
And to think how optimistic people were
after the Rice game.
The only thing missing now are safeties and punt/FG blocks.
by goingforthecorner on Sep 29, 2007 5:28 PM CDT reply actions
Outcoached
is the big one. All this talk about how were gonna have this "swarming" defense and our offense is gonna throw it up and down the field. Well, how do you expect to throw it up and down the field when we call 80 5 yard out plays a game and Colt cant throw the ball high enough to get it over the D-line. Horrible coaching both on Mack and GD for not calling more rollouts and getting Colt outside the pocket so he can throw without traffic.
i was really hoping PB was right...
in agreeing with that they play hard but stupid and that everything went right for them and wrong for us last year. i really thought last year was just an anamolie.
i'm going to hang myself.
for real.
JK JK! LOL! JK!
but i mean come on...the hell is going on in mack's tiny brain.
Everything will be fine, they tried their best
My team, that is. Hi I'm Mack Brown, and I'll talk circles around you reporters because you're too hard on our boys.
They always give 110%. And just because they appear listless, unfocused and out-everything'ed on gameday, they gave it their best shot. In the end, that'll keep me around 10-11 wins each season.
Maybe some aspects of today's gameplan didn't work, like the the kick return coverage, the punt return coverage, the offensive schemes, the personnel decisions, and overall unity of play, but we're on the right track. And besides, how many teams can say they're 4-0?...better make that 4-1.
College football will be ruined
for at least the next few weeks. I hate when that happens.
I'm surprised they didn't go for two.
I hope that's an indication of their over confidence, not their dominance. Right now there's not much difference.

All the serious issues discussed here
since the start of the season came real today.
We weren't blowing hot air. What we were seeing, unfortunately, was fairly accurate and correct.
It will take this team several games to redirect itself if, indeed, real and meaningful change takes place.
Colt is a placeholder for this offense. Has been, although I've been reluctant to say it here for obvious reasons. He's a great kid but the offense is geared for a different speed and kind of QB.
The offense line is the source of many problems dealing with time to pass and opening holes. The line will get better, but depth is a serious problem.
And the D, well, we've chewed that bone down to the marrow.
The question is how long does it take for this loss to heal, for the "new" team to find itself, for the fans to regain interest. Coming off the MNC, this is a down, down day. Way down.
Looks like John may go out

So anyone think Chiles should be the starter for the RRS?
by goingforthecorner on Sep 29, 2007 5:53 PM CDT reply actions
Don't want to throw McCoy under the bus but....
If he isn't healthy enough to play, then he needs to take himself out of the damn game.
Period.
He is hurting the team more than he is helping. He looks like complete crap. Now, I know the O-line is just plain awful but I am referring to the plays that he actually has time to throw. He looks like dog crap.
not an issue of health
unless his poor health causes him to telegraph every damn pass.
He made some damn good plays today, but one bad play can cancel out a lot of good ones.
Well, if it's not his health....
than Colt has some real issues. Today, telegraphing his passes just touches the surface. He also had issues with accuracy, threw the ball into his offensive linemens' helmets, underthrew open receivers, overthrew open receivers, made some extremely poor decisions (i.e. threw for 4 interceptions) etc.
Not a good day for Colt to say the least.
The optimistic side of me
says that maybe this is the flat out, straight up, ass whooping we needed. Maybe not though, maybe we just arent a good football team. Damn I hate saying that. We should drop out of the top 25, maybe then they'd start playing like they dont just deserve to be there.
are they even trying...?
to even look like they want to TRY and win the game

Mock
Chance will always have the Texas Tech game in Austin.
No way!
NO WAY this team deserves to go to the NC game even with one loss!
Florida with one, USC with one, LSU with one, OU with one, WVU with one, Cal with one and the list goes on, are so much better than us right now that anyone of them with one loss would get in WELL before we are even thought of for it.
I APPLAUD NO ONE!!!
Well, this frees up my fucking Saturdays. See y'all in '08.
You people make me more sick than this loss

Thats what I am commenting on
I still believe, but when I see people saying "see you in 08" that makes me wanna puke.

Get Fuck'd
both of ya.

Well that was rude.
Sorry 'bout that.

No worries
we are all pissed off right now...catch you in a couple weeks.
(Will be outa town next weekend...may be a blessing for my bloodpressure though)
Best Case Scenario:
We get our shit together and win the Big XII South and get a second chance to redeem ourselves against KSU in the Big XII championship.
Obviously I will be watching the rest of the season. My "See you in '08" comment, was just that, a comment. Don't get your panties in a wad Rand O.

I will be right there with the rest of ya...
...come hell or high water.
Sorry 'bout the panty comment too. I'm going to take a nap. I'm alittle fussy.

yeah
To address your first thing, I'll keep watching, but I won't be as excited. Dammit, this wasn't supposed to happen for another week!
I was so excited when OU lost...now, eh.
Guess we can still win the Big XII South. Yeah, there's your silver lining.

"hard but stupid"
i'll never ever forget that.
seriously.
what does that make mack? soft and droolcup retarded?
yeah i dont know what to make of that..
ron prince = hard but stupid (2-0 vs. texas)
mack brown = ????????
Prediction
K St gets dominated by Kansas next week. Making this loss hurt even more.
seriously/
not gonna show us the end of the oregon game huh. im about tired of this halfwitted channel
This sucks..
but I think you're lying to yourself if you can say you didn't see it coming. This team has been B-A-D all year, except for the Rice game.
You guys talk a lot about wins and losses, but the reason I (and several other people) bitched during that four-game win streak was that we could see aching, glaring problems with this team.
This is the first time I've ever felt our team was overrated in regard to its ranking. I wish I could point my finger at one part of the team and blame it, but truthfully, we've had problems from top to bottom all year (or since last year).
Sure it's possible for us to get to a BCS game, but that's an uphill battle at this point. I think we need to refocus and concentrate on beating our rivals. It's the best thing we can get out of this season.
How many Losses will we have this year?
I say at least 3! How many more like this is it going to take for Mack to realize HE is not getting it done! Terrible game plan+terrible execution+ no desire = ASS WHIPPING!
Embarrassing display today.
We just saw it

If this is the team
we have the rest of the year...
- K-State
- OU
- Okie State
- A&M
I still think we can beat Baylor, Iowa State, Tech, and Nebraska.
Wow, that makes me sick just typing it, but it could be true.
I will still keep my head up and be here for the games, but I'm trying to be realistic too.
Check this out
First, we give up a legit offensive TD to K-State for their first 7 points.
The next 34 points scored by KSU came from INTs and kickoff returns.
CAN YOU FUCKING BELIEVE THAT SHIT?!

Taking things for granted.
The nature of our agreement in this world implies that we gloss over so many of the details around us. And then life slaps us up side the head and knocks off the blinders we'd been wearing by choice.
It happens to us all, on the street, in relationships, on teams, things just slip up and knock the shit out of us and we go "what the hell was that." But those threats were always there; we just didn't concentrate on that particular part of our world.
Sure, this hurts. For you younger fans, it can really spill your guts. Being older I've seen a lot of nasty stupid losses that make you wanna beat your head against the wall and go what the f*ck were they thinking?
But these things happen ever so often and good things can come from it. You won't feel that tonight or tomorrow, but you will at some point in the future. Keep your head high. We're still Texas and we will be Texas tomorrow and the days afterward. And next time we'll take this revenge business a little more seriously.
you fair whether fans
make me sick. It's still a loss and it hurts but nobody died and the world is not ending. What, did you become fans in '05 or something? Yea, we we're not supposed to lose this one this bad but McCoy and the special teams let us down.
If you want to be bitch in a positive manner then go ahead but the fire mack or davis talk should be backed up with some details rather than drunken ramblings.
Colt does not equal Chance Mock and the big 12 north is not "our daddy".
Take your pessimism to hornsfans b/c this is this place for constructive and accurate criticism. Believe me, it IS warranted.
Really
I thought this was a place to vent as well...Right now people are pissed, embarrassed and wanting somewhere to talk with people that feel the same. Give these guys a break, its not like they are sending emails to the AD and saying they will never go to another game. They are frustrated and in the next few days, as always, it will become constructive. Lets just chill out and let this horrible showing sink in for everyone.
True for you and most on here
and I'm not PB so I'm not the moderator or trying to tell you what kind of fan to be. My place now has a hole in the drywall by the way...but some of the commentators on here need the reality check I mentioned.
By all means, I just pissed off my wife with a whole in our wall so I'm not saying I'm qualified to tell anyone what/how to think about our loss but my point was to try and post constructive criticism however difficult that may right now.
THANK YOU!!!
For crying out loud, I'm watching this game at home all by my self, the game ended 4 minutes ago and that's just it, I need to vent, and this is the best place for me to do it, I could go yell at the old lady next door, but I think that would confuse her.

give us about 24 hours
The details (as opposed to the surprisingly astute "drunken" ramblings) are forthcoming.
Colt sucked today. Constructive and accurate, whatever the hell that means, criticism is reserved for six days out of the week. Today we're pissed. And I bet everyone's comments on here right now display our reactions and emotions as "accurately" as possible.
I agree
right after a game like that, every fan should be pissed. I am not a fair weather fan, been here since I was 8 years old, so 16 years. But seriously, this freaking sucks and to say we just need to be positive is straight BS. Thats what Baylor does, settle for morale victories and Guy Morrison buys the team ice cream after the game no matter the outcome. That is just not Texas.
Point is, let everyone vent right now. Whats it hurting? In the next few days, things will settle and "constructive criticism" can continue.
Agreed, and maybe the loss
and whiskey made me upset at some of the previous comments so I'm not saying I'm a better fan or you're not allowed to post whatever you feel on here. BON is for everyone.
My comments were really directed at the posters who believe the every coach and player should be replaced after a loss. Posting crap just to be posting.
Not all of them..
Just the ones, or rather one, we've been talking about for 7 years now.

Loss hurts
The loss hurts a lot, especially in light of the OU loss, but they are still MY team. I will continue to watch... one good thing I can say about today is the defense was not the cause of our problems. 3 plays did it... and two of them were special teams returns for touchdowns, and one is an interception for a TD. That is insane. Without those three plays Texas wins by 1.
K-State beat us yes, but after watching last year's game and now this one, it's like we could not get a break to break our way. Colt McCoy is not having a good stretch, but he is not Chance Mock. I remember Chance Mock well... there is no comparison.
Here's your details
We LOST. Is that enough to warrant criticism? I think so. If not for you how about the fact that we continue to run the same pathetic offense that even a second year head coach and his staff can figure out how to stop. If that's not enough how about the fact that we've been pushed around all year. If that's not enough how about lining up Colt at receiver with Chiles at QB? Is that really scaring anyone? Not me if I'm the d-coordinator on the other side of the field. Granted...we have talent issues (or a lack thereof)in some spots, but we're consistently flat, playing down to our competition and absolutely vanilla on offense. I'm not calling for Greg Davis' head, but at some point he HAS to be smart enough to realize what he's doing isn't working and try something else (and Mack too for that matter). I didn't see any of that today even when they were down.
Whoa...
Me wondering if Colt is closer to Chance Mock than Major Applewhite doesn't make me a fair-weather fan. I think it is totally reasonable to wonder WTF is going on with him. Let's face it, he hasn't been the same player since K St. last year. He has shown flashes this year but has been very inconsistent. I don't think that's a pessimistic comment.
I'm not jumping ship on this program. I've sat through games much worse than this (I was in school for the McWilliams era). I'm pissed and disappointed, but I'm not going anywhere.
Fire Greg Davis...
If you don't see the evidence around you, then you aren't looking. Vince won the national championship INSPITE of gd, not because of him. GD has never been more than an average coach, and I've been saying this since about 2000. He does not deserve the keys to the Ferrari. He has done NOTHING that a simply competent coach could not have accomplished. Period. And he is getting paid far and above what a competent coach gets paid in this league.
We should have picked up Chris Peterson when we had the chance.
by Hornbud on Sep 29, 2007 6:36 PM CDT up reply actions
Right on
I agree.
Constructive criticism: The team does not look good. Colt has not been the same since before the K-State game...LAST YEAR. Not sure what to do with McCoy. I know he makes some great plays but 4 interceptions against an average team is just unacceptable. He just doesn't look good.
I think it's time to let Chiles play a bit more. I have never been one for quarterback controversies and QB's splitting time but I really think that Chiles should be splitting time with McCoy.
Just my thoughts.
Sorry about that Longhorns
... and with that loss, I think my entry this week is better labeled College Don't Pick'em. Oy.
Greg Davis is a Dinosaur....
that needs to be drugg out behind the barn and shot. Either that or someone needs to give that old man some weed for his cataracts and for a damn imagination for play calling. Running the same shit, halfback shotgun snap draws up the middle makes me wanna puke. It may have worked with Vince, but for God's Sakes- its time to move on.
Hate to say it- but its time to look to the future. We can start building now instead of continuing the same crap that is simply not working. Time to let Chiles play I say. And more importantly, time to cut your losses with J. Charles. And most importantly, time to get some coaches on staff that light a fire under their players' asses and use logical play call reasoning.
What did J. Charles do wrong?
Did I miss something. You can't be referring to the fumbles he had in games we won, can you?
POSTMORTEM
I've got a postgame thread up, and everyone's free to mourn however they need to.
Just follow the community rules - be nice to one another, and do your best not to go too far when you talk about a player. Criticism - particularly analytical criticism - is warranted and welcome. Just be sane about it.
Thanks.
