Florida RB commit Dalvin Cook visiting Texas

Dalvin Cook - Bud Elliott (SB Nation)

The 'Horns are hosting one of the nation's top backs on Monday.

New Texas Longhorns running back coach Larry Porter has been on the job since January, but he's yet to win his first major recruiting battle, something he's hoping to change with help from a Monday visit from Florida commit Dalvin Cook, a running back from Miami (Fla.) Central.

The 5'11, 190-pound Cook participated in The Opening this summer and is a consensus five-star running back ranked as the No. 3 player at his position nationally. A former Clemson pledge, Cook flipped to the Gators in April and has been committed since, despite recently visiting Tallahassee for a Florida State camp.

The question is how solid is his commitment to Florida? Obviously, his willingness to pay for an unofficial visit across the country is significantly different from getting a free trip on an official visit, which the 'Horns would surely need him to take eventually to have a legitimate shot at him, but he's also still actively working as a recruiter for head coach Will Muschamp:

So while the visit is encouraging, it's rather late in the process to seriously enter the recruitment of such a highly-coveted prospect, making Cook a longshot to join the Texas class as the third running back, even if he wasn't committed to an in-state recruiting power.

As much as Porter needs a major coup, it looks unlikely to come from Cook, so Texas may have to keep looking to find an explosive big-play threat in the 2014 class to complement current commits Donald Catalon and D'Onta Foreman.
