Marquise Goodwin: Speed Kills

Remember the days when pundits pondered if Usain Bolt could play football? Well, Marquise Goodwin is no Usain Bolt, but he is an Olympic athlete that will get his shot in the pro football ranks. At the University of Texas, Goodwin was a track athlete as well as a football player and made the 2012 Summer Olympic team. Goodwin has a tiny stature at 5'9" and 192 lbs., but managed to make a large impact on football games when he got touches at the University of Texas.

As exciting as Goodwin was at the college level, his frame and skill set make many wonder if he will be successful in the pro ranks. In the next few series, I will analyze Goodwin's usage and his strengths that could make him a valuable NFL player for the Buffalo Bills.

Breaking Goodwin Down: Contact

I thought I would shortly address the fact that Goodwin is small and how that would play a role in how he blocks. Some smaller players are not always aggressive and others simply are too small and get swallowed up by bigger defenders. The following sequence is from the 2012 Alamo Bowl in which Goodwin was the MVP.

This is the opening kickoff of the game and Goodwin did not take the return so he turns into the returner's lead blocker initially.

The arrow is a little crooked, but you can clearly see that Goodwin has his man lined up in this sequence. Somehow, a man came free on the outside and could potentially blow up this return if he gets by Goodwin.

So much for Goodwin being too small to be physical. On this kick return, Goodwin destroyed the defender that came at him. I know the pictures are a bit grainy and this wasn't necessarily a "tape study", I think it was worth debunking the myth that smaller players can't be effective blockers and can't be physical. I never like to watch players get hurt, but this is good news for the Bills.

Breaking Down Goodwin: Utility/Reverses

A large portion of Goodwin's yards and usage came in reverses and in runs. Texas largely underutilized Goodwin throughout his career, however, when Goodwin is analyzed, it is clear that the Longhorns incorporated Goodwin into the gameplan through some gadget plays during his career.

Goodwin begins this play in the slot for Texas with the nearest defender splitting the difference between Goodwin and the last man on the line of scrimmage.

Okay, so Goodwin starts the reverse as the ball is snapped and it becomes clear that he will be headed for the sideline and hopefully for a long scamper. At this point in the game, Texas had not been able to really get anything going and David Ash, Texas' quarterback, was really holding the offense back from doing anything greater.

I apologize about the fact that it appears that a five year old wrote the numbers, but I think it is noteworthy to point out that there are eight different defenders chasing Goodwin and he is only eight yards down field. 5, 6,7, and 8 all have a reasonable chance to catch Goodwin down the sideline, however everyone else, especially 1 look out of the chase. Goodwin's speed is incredible and he made it eight yards without anyone laying a finger on him.

Goodwin beat out every defender to score Texas' first touchdown of the game. He solely kept Texas in the game early when David Ash could not hit the broad side of a barn and the offense kept stalling out. His speed lets him escape various situations where he is totally boxed in by four defenders and it looks impossible to escape.

This next sequence is strikingly similar to the last, so I will shorten it up, but it goes to show the lack of creativity that Texas really had when it came to Goodwin and his usage as well as the fact that Goodwin made the most of his opportunities that he was given. This next clip is from a game against Ole Miss in Goodwin's senior year.

Goodwin is lined up as the outside receiver on the far end of the field and unlike the last sequence, the Longhorns are in a single back set with double tight ends. Goodwin receives the ball directly from the quarterback instead of Jonathan Gray, the running back. Instead of being a double reverse, this is just a reverse that goes directly to Goodwin.

Goodwin not only makes it out of a four man box, but he beats 1 and 2 to a spot that both are closer to. His acceleration and speed show through incredibly well on the various reverses that Ole Miss utilizes. At the next level, the same will likely not happen, however, Goodwin has many skills that will translate well and he can definitely make an impact as a gadget player.

Breaking Down Goodwin: Receiving Skills

This play is relatively simple, however, it is one of the few times that I saw Texas throw Goodwin the ball when he runs an intermediate route. It is extremely difficult to see, but Goodwin cuts on his route incredibly tight and incredibly low to the ground which benefits him because the corner was playing extremely tight to Goodwin's body and created just enough separation.

Goodwin makes a nice catch on the comeback route even though the defender is all over him. It is a short route, but it does help to dispel the stigma that Goodwin is strictly a gadget player and doesn't have the skill level to run anything except for fly routes. Had Texas used Goodwin more in this way, he probably would have put up better numbers and contributed even more to Texas' offense.

In the Alamo Bowl, Texas also utilized Goodwin's speed and quickness by running two similar plays where Goodwin would run a stutter and go into the endzone.

Goodwin begins lined up against Oregon State's corner and runs straight ahead to about the twenty yard line.

Once Goodwin gets to the twenty yard line, he breaks down as if he is going to turn back on a comeback route as he gives a little bit of a head and shoulder fake. The corner bites hard on the fake which earns Goodwin a good deal of separation. Those three yards would have been very important, however, Goodwin lost the ball in the air as he was tracking it. Obviously, Goodwin's speed is his biggest attribute, but his fake and burst back into the route are impressive. He is not a simple speed player that washes through the league, but he has skills and attributes that could make him a valuable member of the Buffalo Bills.

Here again, Goodwin runs another fake comeback route and puts his whole body into it. The defensive back takes the bait and bites on the fake, giving Goodwin the ability to make a run toward the endzone. Goodwin has the ability to run a variety of short and intermediate routes that can be built off of to create longer routes and fakes for the big play.

As you can see, Goodwin's fake makes the defensive back come up, locking his hips in a position that makes it difficult for him to turn and run with Goodwin to the endzone. Goodwin has explosive straight line speed which makes it even more difficult for the defensive back to recover.

Goodwin finishes off this plays with a solid over the shoulder catch and about five to six yards of separation. Goodwin possesses a dangerous combination of quickness, speed, and toughness which will make him difficult to cover in the NFL. If he can fight off longer and more physical corners, Goodwin could flash rare speed and ability to get open in all sorts of routes. In the end, Goodwin will be much more than just a deep threat or a speed receiver because his abilities on routes are much better than many people graded and he can run short and intermediate routes. Although not included in this review of Goodwin's work, he did a nice job adjusting to the deep ball which is specifically seen in his tape against Ole Miss where he was under thrown and adjusted enough to make a nice catch twice. Most importantly, Goodwin can take the top off the defense and help CJ Spiller really show his abilities for the Buffalo Bills.

Remember the days when pundits pondered if Usain Bolt could play football?

Longhorn moving to NYC

Hi guys,

Im moving to NYC at the end of summer to work in the financial district. I was wondering if the NYC horns have any gatherings to watch games or something of the sort.

I also wouldnt mind advice/leads on apartment hunting. Based on my research, I think Brooklyn might be the best place for me. Im looking for a safe area, close to the financial district (would like a commute of around 30 min to finan dist), couple of rooms in a 2k-ish range.

Also wondering if I should keep my car? Any other advice, experiences, etc you would like to share would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

Longhorn Aplogist Summons Triumverate (and is Not Aplogizing)

I do not know a lot about coaching evaluations, but when you hear a word like "malaise" used to describe the once proud Longhorn men's athletic program, things are not in good shape. So I am here to fix this thing up. Think Harvey Keitel as a cleaner in Pulp Fiction. Lets call Mack Brown, Rick Barnes, and Auggie on the carpet and take a look at the conversation that should take place.

Augie Garrido

Why Augie is on the carpet

1. This is all a performance play here. Augie followed up an extremely disappointing 2012 campaign that failed to qualify for the CWS playoffs with a mind numbing lone team missing out on the Big XII tournament. The only upside, this won't get worse than this.

2. Hitting, hitting, hitting. No offense, fire hitting coach, no offense, rinse and repeat.

Competitive Environment that impacts expectation

1. Texas is a clear leader of tradition, excellence, facilities, and fan support in the Big XII conference.

2. The Texas fan base clearly values the baseball program more than the other schools. Very few impediments for a good leader to have and maintain a significant competitive advantage in the Big XII.

3. Therefore it is reasonable to have an expectation of conference dominance, frequent trips to the CWS, with a significant shot to add a national title on a once a decade basis or so pace.

Extenuating Circumstances that affect his performance

1. Not many, but baseball is a difficult sport to recruit. The best bats may not be able to hit a college level breaking ball.

2. The baseball draft is much more disconcerting to your program than the NFL counterpart.

3. "Turnaroundability": Should be quick. No - has to be quick, as a good program has to plan on their studs enjoying only 2 years on campus. One good to great recruiting class saves all. 2-3 really good pitchers can easily = a nice CWS run. And Texas is teeming with HS talent.

The Talk

Bring in Trump.

"Augie you stubbed your toe and we stuck by you. Not only did you not improve, you took a step backwards. This would be like Mack following up his 5-7 debacle by going 4-8. Auggie you're fiurd!"

Why Rick is on the carpet

Competitive Environment that impacts his expectation

1. Texas is not a clear leader in this arena. Excitement of fan base not there, facilities not top notch. Not only are we not the Joneses, we don't even know the Joneses.

2. The Kansas Jayhawks are the clear and dominant leader of the Big XII. The setting, the fan base, the tradition make it difficult if not impossible for Rick to consistently win head to head recruiting battles.

3. The proximity factor for basketball talent is not as valued in basketball as other sports. The blue chip talent in Houston and Dallas are not more likely to attend Texas than true basketball powers. While you can pin some of this on Rick, the We're Texas argument is not the advantage for Rick as it is for Mack or Augie.

4. Running a clean, ethical program (which I value as must have requirement) is difficult. The sleaze factor associated with AAU program presents a significant challenge.

5. The expectation should be as follows. A consistent 2nd to 5th place finish, making it to the NCAA tournament routinely. Getting at least 1 win in the majority of your NCAA excursions. An occasional Big XII title and/or a significant tourney run. It should be noted that until 2010 - Rick Barnes clearly met and exceeded this expectation.

Extenuating Circumstances that affect his assessment

1. When you think of the expectation here, think OU,OSU, KSU. Rick should be able to compete with these programs, and has fallen behind these benchmarks. They should have a leg up on Baylor due to some black eyes associated with that program, and the relative unattractiveness of the campus environment. Rick has let these guys stay in front of him for a few years now.

2. There has been an exodus of recruits and Rick's coaching style often draws ire for being draconian.

3. "Turnaroundability": Can be quick. You get a blue chip talent like (KD, TJ, or DJ (maybe we should only recruit guys known by initials) and presto you are good. But Rick is at a disadvantage for those guys.

The Talk

I don't get what you are doing, but lets be honest. You control your talent acquisition, but do not seem to be able to develop a team chemistry. Most of your teams do not shoot well, and other programs do not really have this problem consistently. I am going to stand by you on the transfer exodus, so here is what I am going to do. I expect you to craft a clear vision of what you want out of every position, then clearly understands how every recruit fits that vision. I want you to know what a "Rick Barnes" kid is, and then recruit those kids. You have to qualify for the NCAA tourney next year or you are gone. In addition, you have to increase the "watchability" of the product - and I can't clarify that term other than to say it is the opposite of what you have now.

Why Mack is on the carpet

Mack is a little different, after bottoming out, he has improved 2 consecutive years. While maybe not as fast as we want, he has been able to get the ship turning around. Augie and Rick are still dropping.

Still Mack has been guilty of 4 sins:

1. Mack has not provided a concise vision of what Texas football is. Changing offensive and defensive concepts like they are boxer or brief kind of decisions. Therefore, recruiting has suffered because kids do not know what the flavor of the day is, and the coaches often recruit for 1 system and end up with another.

2. Mack has FUBAR'd the QB position. More than just a miss on GG - heck anyone would've signed that kid. But the handling of GG, the agonizing Ash vs. McCoy stuff, the miss on RGIII and Johnny - my head hurts.

3. Mack had sworn off "over loyalty" to coaches and admits he let things go stale. This just in, when you make like $6 million per year it is your job to make sure things don't go stale. I am really concerned the lesson is not totally learned, as I just hope Manny doesn't cost the Horns dearly this season.

4. Mack has embarrassed the team with 3 consecutive losses to OU. The losses showed a team without preparation, and without fight.

Competitive Environment that impacts his expectation

1. Texas facilities and brand recognition are at the top of the Big XII, but will probably always be on a relatively even keel with OU.

2. Despite the Big XII being a rather low profile conference, home to some of the best offensive coaching in the country. OSU, Baylor, KSU, WVU, TT are now and will be a threat to upset the apple cart at all times.

3. The SEC is the 900lb Gorilla in College football, and they will continue to push cheating and sleaze to new levels, and the SEC is now clearly in Texas' backyard.

4. With so much alignment of the football team with the University, maintaining a classy image above this SEC fray is expected.

5. So lets set the expectation for any Texas coach as follows. A 30% Big XII title success rate, consistent top 10 finishes, and regular appearances in BCS bowls. An occasional appearance as SEC fodder in the MNC.

Extenuating Circumstances that affect his assessment

1. Mack is an excellent "face of the program" whose behavior and conduct is a credit to the University. He maintains a rapport and supports ex-players. For example, his efforts with VY are commendable, and there may not be a better CEO face of the program coach in the country.

2. "Turnaroundability": Difficult. You lose the talent in the upperclassmen and you have what we have. You replace with frosh and then watch 22-23 year old men smash your 18 year olds.

The Talk

"Mack, we go way back. I am a huge fan and eternally grateful for what you have done for us. Remember when VY scored that TD - man I loved that. Still, support me and if do not go 3 for 3 on these benchmarks, step down and lets work on getting you a statue outside the stadium. You just gotta : Beat OU. At least share the Big XII. Finish in the top 10 in the nation. 3 for 3 Mack
.

NCAA Track and Field Championships

Longhorn, Ryan Crouser is the new NCAA shot put champion. Out of his 6 attempts he fouled 5 of them, only recording one legal mark. However, that mark, 66 feet 7.5 inches, was just good enough to sneak off with the title by a measly 1.5 inches.

19.25 (63-2 )

20.07 (65-10¼ )

20.07 (65-10¼ )

I have never seen a shot putter foul that many times. The shot put isn't like the long jump (where jumpers try and get as close to the board as possible to maximize their distance from it); All you just have to do is keep your body (all be it massive body for most of these guys) in a 7 foot diameter circle while throwing the shot. OK, that's a lot easier said than done; it actually requires a lot of grace (but probably not that much more than is required from a good NFL offensive lineman). If he had fouled on his third attempt, he wouldn't have even been able to continue in the competition, and would have finished dead last. Very nerve racking sequence of throws there, but congratulations Ryan, nonetheless.

Through the first day of the decathlon Texas has two major contenders. Johannes Hock set some huge lifetime bests in his last few events of the day. He is truly big dude for a decathlete too, so obviously he had one of the better throws in the shot put. However, not very many 220+ pound men (height 6'2) can carry their body over a full 400m track in 49.8 seconds on a hot humid day, after competing in 4 other events (For comparison that's about what Sanya Richards Ross runs fresh in perfect conditions weighing in at only 135lbs). Usually decathletes have the most chiseled bodies of pretty much any athlete. You have to be strong for the throwing events, but you also have to be able to run the metric mile at the end of 9 events in at worst 5 minute or so mile pace, sprint 100m in nearly 10 seconds, jump high, and be able to quickly clear those hurdles as well. Except for the shotput, and maybe the discus, pretty much the only thing all the events in the decathlon have in common is that fat doesn't work in your favor. Just google image UT grad Trey Hardee for an example of the type of bodies decathletes tend to have...yikes! Hock has room for improvement there, just saying, but that makes his marks in the running and jumping events all that more impressive. And the good news is, he's a freshman!

1 Jeremy Taiwo 4389 Washington SR

Other longhorn highlights from day one of the NCAA out door track and field championships included UT qualifying for the finals in the women's 4x100m relay (7th), the womens 400m dash (Courtney Okolo), and the women's 400 hurdles (Danielle Dowie).

The final two days of the NCAA track and field championships (the glamour events) will be broadcast on ESPNU this weekend, so check your local listings. Unfortunately Goodwin is not competing for this year's long jump title, but there are several Texas athletes still to watch. I'll try and give some updates as they come, in the comments section of this post.

TCU Head Coach says his 2013 Big 12 favorite is Oklahoma State

Gary Patterson told the Star-Telegram his favorite for the Big 12 Championship this year, "Right now, I’d be looking at Oklahoma State in our conference. Got those two good quarterbacks."

He's not talking about Wes Lunt, the first true freshman to start for the Cowboys. He's gone. No, he's talking about soon to be Senior Clint Chelf, who has started 6 games in his career. And J.W. Walsh, who started a handful of games last year before being injured.

Mike Gundy hasn't even declared a starter between the two for the 1st game of the season, but it looks like it might be Chelf's job to lose. Of his 6 starts, he lost to K-State, OU + Baylor. Wins over Texas Tech, WVU + Purdue.

Personally, I think it will be Texas, Oklahoma, TCU + Oklahoma State, in that order. I realize Mr. Patterson's answer was a measured response due to recruiting and all, but is there anybody other than Gary that thinks the Cowboys are going to finish in first? Or which of their QB's starts the season (please answer for both OSU and TCU)?

UT Medical School Master Plan: Demolition of Erwin Center

It shows the construction of a hospital on Red River in Phase 1 and 2 before the destruction of the Erwin Center in Phase 3. The tailgating lots between the Swim Center and Red River would be removed for further buildings. Slide 45 seems to show an addition to DKR, but that my be speculative.

So I don't know exactly how this works but I live in Ohio and log onto the web site for the Austin American Statesman to check up on the Longhorns. I don't read Austin news or any other feature. Now it seems they want me to buy a subscription? Do I have this right? Stories have a teaser but then you have to log in to read the full story. It is like Hookem.com. So I will just have to get all my longhorn news from my prime source: Burntorangenation.com But now when the Daily Roundup quotes a source from AAS I guess they will need to indicate that it is a pay site. The truth is, I got frustrated before I looked for a cost and am assuming that if I log on, there must be a cost. Did I opt out too quickly?

That man's return after the suspension really helped Texas. It's too bad that he has to go, but I understand why: the NCAA sucks. He's got a pretty decent stock anyway, so now's an okay time to leave. This is the first I've seen on Youtube or any website. I thought I'd share this with BON.

Hey Longhorns, Bills fan here, please talk us about Marquise Goodwin. I really want to known your opinion about this guy. Can he be an exciting playmaker to us?

We are very excited with our recent draft additions. Ou offense will look pretty explosive if Goodwin can be a good slot option. Can him thrive there? Is he a better option outside?

PS.: Destinee Hooker was awesome playing here in Brazil, she's pretty nice...

ACC GOR through 2027?

According to published reports, the ACC is ready to announce a grant of rights agreement that will last through the current contract. The ACC appears to be content to stay at fourteen full members, plus Notre Dame for football only. So, bid farewell to the dreams of FSU or Clemson in the B12. Looks like the current line up will be what we have, with nothing on the horizon joining without diluting the payout to member schools.

App to track Longhorns in NFL & NBA

Hey all,

A buddy of mine recently created an app called "Draftpedia" that tracks NBA and NFL draft data, rosters, and statistics from the last 40+ years. It lets you sort the data in a lot of different ways - one way is by college so you can see and track every pro that attended Texas in a single list (which then allows you to see year-by-year stats for every player). It should be a great reference tool for sports history and random trivia.

If you're interested, here's the download link for iPhones/iPads (it's free):
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/draf...562159411?mt=8

----------------------------------------------------------

Here's a press release from the Wall Street Journal (http://online.wsj.com/article/PR-CO-20130417-908281.html?mod=googlenews_wsj):

Draftpedia's iPhone App Launches for All NBA & NFL Draft Fans

SANTA MONICA, CA--(Marketwired - April 17, 2013) - Draftpedia, the only iPhone app with NFL & NBA draft history, is now available free in the App Store. Built exclusively for mobile, Draftpedia has 30+ years of draft history, past team rosters, draft info for every player's alma mater and statistics for every current player.

Roommates David Rabie and Joe Sarafian hatched the idea for Draftpedia on the couch during a Clipper game. Discussing Kenyon Martin's historically poor draft class, Joe asked why consumers had to rely on searching Wikipedia for the answer. "As Gen Y sports enthusiasts, what has driven us this entire time is to build an app that makes our lives easier," said David Rabie, Co-Founder.

"Given the competition, we knew that our edge would come with speed, efficiency and design. We built a database of information that is stored within the app -- eliminating any loading time between screens and allowing the app to function offline," said Co-Founder Joe Sarafian. The information is presented in clear, easy-to-use tables and is all linkable, offering multiple ways for users to navigate within the app.

Launching just in time for the 2013 NFL Draft, Draftpedia is the ultimate reference guide for any sports fan looking for historical data including:

-- 40+ Years of Past Drafts

-- 30 Years of Team Rosters

-- Every Division 1 College's NFL/NBA Alumni

-- Breakdown by Nationality (NBA) and Pick (NFL)

-- Statistics for Every Current Player

"Next time you're debating a player's alma mater or comparing draft classes, Draftpedia is your best solution," said Rabie.

About Draftpedia

Draftpedia consolidates information about past NFL & NBA drafts in a convenient and fast iPhone app. It has every draft year of the modern era, lists of professional players from every D1 College, past rosters for every team and statistics for every current player. Founded in 2012, Draftpedia is based in Santa Monica, CA. For more information, visit www.draftpedia.com.
