Maurice Evans: Bad Boy?

Travis just wrote me an email that reminded me of something.  Texas wrote: "The poll about Gibson-Tucker was intended as a tongue-in-cheek question, which apparently only 2/3 of our readers understood. Of course Gibson is the PG, but Tucker thinks he is. That
guy kills me. Reminds me of Maurice Evans."

Ah, Maurice Evans. Remember that guy? The infinitely talented and athletic underachiever? Well, he's finally put all his talents together and has found a home in the NBA. I didn't even realize he'd made it in the NBA until I visited Detroit over Thanksgiving and my girlfriend's father, a Pistons season ticket holder, kept calling for "Evans to get in the game." I had no idea who he was talking about until Maurice checked in.

I quickly realized it was THE Maurice Evans and I told my girlfriend's father all about his mediocre Texas career. He told me that Evans is a huge spark off the bench for the Pistons and has really made a solid contribution. To say I'm shocked is an understatement.

Hey, it's better late than never.  Good luck Maurice.

I concur with Peter. Evans was always an NBA talent, but he never seemed to put it all together at Texas.

Here's what I wrote in the Daily Texan in a somewhat infamous ripping of the Horns following their loss to Temple in the first round of the 2001 NCAA Tournament, which ended up being Evans' final game in a Texas uniform:

"Why in the world is Maurice Evans shooting (and missing) three-pointer after three-pointer? Evans is listed at 6-foot 5-inches and 220 lbs. The guy has a body more like Vince Carter than Reggie Miller, but you wouldn't be able to tell that from the way he plays. Why hit the weights so hard to develop muscle that you can use to post people up when you continue settle for jump shots? Against Temple, Evans took nine of his 16 attempts from behind the three-point line and scored zero points posting up his man."

Maurice was always very friendly to me and he went through a lot when he left Wichita State for Texas. If you care to revisit Evans' saga, you can read a feature about him online in the Daily Texan archives.

He's a dunker now
The Pistons are using him how Texas should have. He flies to the rim and plays above it, like Vince Carter. Oh well; Rick's never been the best at the getting the most out of his offensive talents.

Ex-Horns Ugly Late on Sunday Night NFL Game
I couldn't help but notice that our Roy Williams and Shaun Rogers made crucial mistakes late as the Lions, once again, couldn't finish off the Packers late.  After making a spectacular TD catch, Roy dropped a pass that he probably could have taken to the house late in the fourth.  Then, Rogers, who stood out all game (and all year for that matter) as the Lions best defensive player, made a crucial mental mistake that led to the Packers winning field goal in OT.  While stupid, Rogers pretty much summed up the Lions season by throwing the Packers tailback about ten yards out of bounds.  Theisman and crew were all over Shaun after this, but they failed to mention that the only reason the Lions got to OT rested on Rogers' shoulders.

Don't forget DJ
Though he didn't get called for it, Derrick Johnson was the one who held late in the Cowboys/Chiefs game that ended up costing KC the game.
