We're #1!

WE'RE NUMBER ONE!!!

I cannot believe what I have just seen. The greatest game ever. The greatest performance by an individual player ever. A team achievement I never thought I would see.

The sheer joy I experienced leading a bar of Texas Exes in Washington D.C. in a chant of "We're #1!" must be magnified by 1000 at least by the members of the Burnt Orange Nation who attended the game in person.

But we all know the same indisputable fact: the Texas Longhorns are the national champions in the sport the most of us love the most.

Please come back to BON.com in the days and weeks to follow as we celebrate this joyous event. But please enjoy this moment. Because honestly, this is as good as it gets.

I embraced total strangers tonight the way I do my own family, and I came very close to crying tears of joy.

Congratulations to Mack Brown, Vince Young and all of the members of the 2005 Texas Longhorns. The 2005 National Champions!!!

Congratulations
Here's my effort at being a good sport: congratulations to the Texas Longhorns and fans, best of luck next season in extending the streak.

Also, thanks to the folks at BON for putting up an interesting blog and welcoming in wandering Trojans.

USC can hold its head high
They were 12 inches away from winning the greatest college football game ever.  They have a lot to be proud of.

It's About Team
Vince Young has proven to be the most unstoppable player in college football history. But the whole team earned this. No defensive stops, no victory. No offensive line protection, no victory (well, maybe a victory with Vince back there). No key secondary play, no victory. Congratulations to Mack Brown and the whole Texas Longhorn team! Definitely times in the past where I doubted Mack. Never again.

HOOK 'EM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, I cried tears of joy.

The Greatest Victory I've ever witnessed. Hook 'em!!!

BEST GAME EVER!!!
How could this game live up to the hype? And yet it did. The best part is the USC fans have nothing to bitch about. Their team came to play. This was a hell of a game and we came out on top. This is the culmination of my 15 years of Texas football fandom (I don't really count it until I was 8, I probably didn't know what I was getting myself into before that).

Unbelievable
I sobbed for about 3 minutes - an unbelievable game - I can't even describe it

Vince Young was awesome and the Ref's SUCK.
No doubt Vince Young was incredible to watch, best running and passing game I have ever seen a college quarterback play. Leinart was incredible also, 29-40, 365 yards.(16 of 19 for 218 in the second half). TD's on the 1st 4 second half posessions for USC.

Reggie Bush sure went bonehead on that lateral, didn't he? 14-0 USC if he doesn't go brain dead.

But come on, let's be honest. The ref's helped Texas out, alot.

  1. Vince's pitch to Selvin Young was illegal, his knee was down. Not even close. ( According to me, Fox Sports, ESPN, Keith Jackson....)
  2. Jamaal Charle's fumbled catch. USC recovers. Reversed by the refs. Another blown call, (Fox Sports, ESPN, Keith Jackson, all agree)
  3. How is that not an interception? Drew Kelson had it, landed on his back and lost the ball. Call it even for the missed replay on the Young downed knee.
Texas and USC both played great. Too bad the ref's had to F$#% up another championship game.

VY running by Scott Ware
I loved seeing watching Vince run right by Scott Ware for his second TD.  I immediately thought of "Joey" who was big upping Scott Ware all year.  What does "Joey" have to say about Scott Ware missing that tackle?

by texaslonghorn22 on Jan 5, 2006 4:09 AM CST reply actions

Well,
Vince runs by everybody.  Ware actually had a fairly big impact on the game, with the fumble he caused initially on the punt and also the 4th down stop early in the game.

Congrats from a USC fan
What a great game featuring two amazingly talented teams, and one outcome I wish was different.

As "USC since 1972" put it, Bush made a very boneheaded play.  I'd like to think that if he hadn't tossed the ball away and SC scored a TD or FG, the SC stigma MIGHT have gotten into Texas' heads.  Same for Matt's duck that was intercepted.

HUGE credit goes to Texas' DBs who demonstrated the most efficient and tenacious tackling I think I've ever witnessed.  Although credit goes to VY for a stellar performance, it would be pointless if the UT DBs tackled like every other team in the country.  They were the difference in this game.

Credit should go to SC's high-criticized DBs as well.  Other than their inability to come off WR blocks and attempt to make tackles on VY, they were good in coverage and tackled well.

I'm sure many would disagree with me, but I think SC blew it by not punting on 4-1 with just over 2 minutes to go was a huge mistake.  Giving UT 25+ bonus yards (assuming a touchback) was not worth the risk.  UT still had a few TOs and could've stopped SC on the next series and still forced a punt.  But then again, I'm not a coach who's won national titles.

I couldn't help but think of how the outcome might've changed if UT had made the PAT and FG.  They would only be down 3 with <30 seconds in the game.  I doubt they call a play on 4th & 5 instead of kicking a FG to go to OT.  Granted, who's to say the game would've progressed the same, but it's still interesting to ponder...but still pointless.

Bottom line: Credit to UT on their championship.  Credit to Mack for getting the monkey off his back.  Credit to VY for the most dominating single performance I've ever watched.

The 4th down call
First of all, I fully support the decision to go for it on 4th down.  (a) Carroll has done that all year, and he's got a great offense to work with. (b) I really don't think the 25 yards would have made a difference the way Vince was running.

Secondly, this was the NC game.  If we make that first down, it's game over.   Could you make an argument that we should have passed it?  Maybe.  But either way, that to me is worth the risk, especially with the way LenDale had been running and our line had been blocking.

by TrojanMal on Jan 5, 2006 10:11 AM CST up reply actions

I agree...
... mind you, I bleed burnt orange. LenDale, was getting down throughout the game. We stuffed him. I wouldn't have it any other way for our guys. The Dline did it. However, I don't think it was a bad call.

Again, I'm glad it worked out as it did!!

Lendale
I agree that Lendale was dominant all game, and in that last series SC should've just let him run the ball on 2nd down instead of attempting the pass to the FB.  Everyone knew what play they were going to run on 4th, and UT was wise enough to submarine the OL to allow Huff to stuff the run.  Pete said after the game he knew Texas knew what they were going to call.

I know that all season SC went for it in those situations, I just would've done differently.

by blackdog81 on Jan 5, 2006 11:35 AM CST up reply actions

Lendale
Huff wasn't supposed to be in that hole, he just felt it. The one bad thing about Vince's transcendent performance is that now everyone is talking about UT as though they were Vince and the Pop Warner kids. Everyone had a great game which makes it that much more amazing that Vince was head and shoulders above them.

by gerstmaster on Jan 5, 2006 11:58 AM CST up reply actions

Vince
I agree that the other UT players do not receive fair recognition, especially the WRs' blocking abilities.  It's not coincidnece that no Oklahoma State player got within five yards of Vince on that key 60+ yard TD run.  That's pretty much been the case all season.

Huge respect for Thomas.  I kept yelling at SC to play him tighter.  He was another huge key to the game.

by blackdog81 on Jan 5, 2006 12:26 PM CST up reply actions

While I wouldn't say that...
...it's Vince and the kids, I would say that Vince won that game singe-handedly that night.  Texas has great players all over the team, but USC pretty much won in almost all team aspects of the game last night.  It pretty much came down to one guy.

What a testament to how great VY is that Pete Carroll had one month to try to stop one guy and he still couldn't do it.  The dude is legendary.

4th and 5
Vince at the press confrence today said the name of that play was "Menu 2". As soon as I get back to DC that is going on my plates.
I beat Wells in pool!!!

Having not been around the last time UT won
I myself was shocked at how good this felt.  The feeling after the last VY touchdown run on 4th down was one I've never experienced - pure joy, relief, and awe.

For those who went to Pasadena, who payed either face value or a whole lot more for the tickets, I'm sure it was worth it.  Regardless of outcome, the game was every bit as exciting as it was hyped, and at the end I was left shaking with excitement.  If I could do it all over again, I'd easily drop $3,000 a ticket - even for the nosebleeds.

What?  No post from BoiFromTroy?

BFT?

You there?

<crickets chirping>

Just wanna thank all the Trojan fans I ran into before, during and after the USC game.  You were a classy bunch, one and all.  I got more handshakes and congratulations and "good game's" from USC fans than from fellow Horns as I was leaving the stadium.  Your team played a helluva game, and I felt priviledged to have been in attendance.

See you guys next year in Tempe!
