Looking Ahead To Life After Vince

The Vince Young Era is officially over, yes, but life goes on. So how about an early look at the 2006 Longhorns? Listed below are my projected starters, with asterisks indicating returning starters.

OFFENSE

Quarterback Colt McCoy
Running Back Jamaal Charles*
Right Tackle Justin Blalock*
Right Guard Cedric Dockery
Center Lyle Sendlein*
Left Guard Kasey Studdard*
Left Tackle Tony Hills
Flanker Quan Cosby*
Split End Limas Sweed* / Billy Pittman*
Tight End Neale Tweedie
Fullback Marcus Myers

--The elephant in the room here, of course, is how to replace Vince Young. There will be a battle among the incoming freshman and redshirt freshman Colt McCoy for the starting job, but it won't be surprising if McCoy is the early starter.

--Three-fifths of the outstanding Texas line returns, and their replacements are big and nasty. Texas will once again have an outstanding line. No worries here at all.

--The Jamaal Charles / Ramonce Taylor combo is going to be sick next year, and here's a thought I just had. How about Henry Melton at fullback? I'd love to see him clearing wide holes for the tailbacks, while remaining a carrying option himself.

--Losing David Thomas is the second biggest loss here, but the core group of receivers return. We'll need someone to be able to get the ball to them, of course.

DEFENSE

Defensive End Tim Crowder*
Nose Tackle Frank Okam*
Tackle Brian Orakpo
Defensive End Brian Robison*
Strongside LB Sergio Kindle
Middle LB Robert Killebrew*
Weakside LB Rashad Bobino*
Right CB Aaron Ross
Free Safety Michael Griffin
Strong Safety Drew Kelson*
Left CB Tarell Brown*

--The defensive line is absolutely loaded. Sure, losing Rod Wright sucks, but there's plenty of reinforcements. This will be a nasty D-Line, for sure.

--I like Robert Killebrew to slide in for Aaron Harris, and I think he's going to be just outstanding. Given the chance to shine, he was in many ways the best linebacker on the team for the second half of this year, and I expect him to anchor what will be an experienced and speedy group of linebackers. The wildcard here is Sergio Kindle. How much will Mack Brown and Gene Chizik play the talented freshman? From all reports, he's going to be too talented to keep on the sideline much. I've revised my projection to put him in as a starter, perhaps forcing Kelson back in to the secondary.

--The secondary will have to learn to play without stars Michael Huff and Cedric Griffin, but again, there's plenty of talent and some solid experience. Tarell Brown has emerged as a very solid corner, and he should be fully healed from the broken arm by fall practices. I initially wrote that I thought Michael Griffin would slide in where Huff used to be, but we'll see. Sergio Kindle is headed to Texas, and he's going to be playing somewhere. Kindle's arrival could force Chizik to return Kelson to the secondary, where he used to play. The secondary may be a notch below this year's group, but I'm guessing that our D-Line isn't going to be giving teams much time to pass anyway.

Overall

I see no reason why this team can't win the Big 12 again next year, provided one of our three quarterback options pans out to something passable. Repeating as undefeated national champions remains a huge challenge, but it's not out of the realm of possibilities. The offense will still be geared toward racking up big yardage on the ground, and with Charles/Taylor running behind a strong O-Line, points will be scored. I'm not terribly worried about the defense slipping much, either. There's a whole lot of talent, and more experience than many realize, coming back to anchor the defense.

As always, it'll come down to the Red River Shootout in Dallas. Still think Mack can't win the big one?

Question
One of my friends repeatedly asserts that Texas should start Henry Melton and hammer the opposing teams' defenses, thereby wearing them out for later in the game, when Ramonce Taylor or Jamaal Charles could be used. Or maybe even a little bit of "Thunder and Lightning," where Melton has a much bigger role than he has had this season.  Opinions?
GO BRUINS. HOOK 'EM HORNS.

by uclawarren on Jan 9, 2006 3:25 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Maybe
Maybe if Melton slimmed down 15 pounds and learned to use his huge frame better. Don't get me wrong; I love having him as a weapon, but he needs to leverage his powerful frame better if he wants to be an every down tailback.

This is not even to mention the fact that Jamaal Charles is so, so good. Whoever said 1,500+ yards is spot on. He's going to be unreal if he's healthy.

Lastly, a formal apology and THANK YOU to Selvin Young. The BON whipping boy early in the year, we gave him an awfully hard time for his disastrous Ohio State and OU games. But toward the end of the year he seemed to finally get his bearings set and recover from his injury. He played well and was really solid in the Rose Bowl. Thank you, Selvin Young.

by Peter Bean on Jan 9, 2006 3:29 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Indeed
Was I imagining, or was Selvin the only back not to fumble the ball?  Kudos to him.

Melton to DE; other lineup forecasts
There is still a good chance Melton will move to DE.  He is fun to watch as a RB and no one will forget the things he did against U.La.La. in the season opener, but with Charles, Young, and Taylor(and incommer McGee), Melton may be able to contribute a lot more at defensive end.  We'll find out in the Spring.

Additional thoughts:

QB: Sherrod Harris will fall significantly behind McCoy and Snead who will both be partaking in Spring drills.  Snead's early enrollment is big for his development and chemistry with the team, but McCoy is likely to win the job, having already earned the respect of the team apparently and having a year under his belt.  Regardless of who the QB is, Mack needs to stick with him.  The last thing UT needs to have is a meritless freshman QB controversey to disrupt the progress of the rest of the team.

RB: will still be a three headed monster with Selvin still having another year of eligibility.  It would be nice if he could resume some return duties on speciall teams.

WR: Will Jordan Shipley line up for the first time?  Regardless, everyone but Carter is back and will be vying for the new QB's love.

TE: Tweadie has really developed, but don't forget big Jermichael Finley who was redshirted this season and will be a receiving TE.

DT: Roy Miller will be a sophomore vying for a lot of time a tackle next to Okam.

LB: Drew Kelson really stepped up and completed his transition to OLB during the Rose Bowl

S:  Kelson would have also been a nice fit with Griffin, Brown, and Ross.  Matt Melton seemed to have his chance a year ago to step up and was promptly burried on the depth chart this season.  Look for some of the freshmen to compete for the job.

Agreed
"Matt Melton seemed to have his chance a year ago to step up and was promptly burried on the depth chart this season.  Look for some of the freshmen to compete for the job."

I would be shocked to see Matt Melton get a starting spot.

One thing Mack is the master at -- reloading the secondary.
He has an eagle eye for raw talent.

Also, Kelson just flat out won the job in the Rose Bowl.

Thank you
for posting about this and pointing out to the doom and gloom crowd that Texas is still going to be a great football team next year. And still the most talented and deep team in the Big 12. Those of you who can't even enjoy a national title without bitching about Greg Davis and predicting a loss next year to Ohio State and OU should be immediately kicked off the bandwagon so the rest of us can bask in something that we've waited most, if not all, of our lives for. It's been less than a week, people. Can't you at least wait until spring and see how the young quarterbacks look before you start pissing and moaning? But that's not how you people work, is it? Five days removed from probably the greatest moment in UT football history and some of you are already calling for Greg Davis to be fired. Pathetic and sad.

Just for the record
"Five days removed from probably the greatest moment in UT football history and some of you are already calling for Greg Davis to be fired. Pathetic and sad."

I make no bones about wanting a new O Coordinator, but I don't want GD fired.
I'm hoping the GD to Texan rumors are true and Mack can replace him.

Anybody that thinks GD is a good coach is delusional from the euphoria of an MNC.

The assistant coaches from Tenn and Miami looked pretty incredible when they coached stellar talent.
Now look at them getting the pink slip.

Take a look at GD's record before meeting Mack Brown (not good).

Mack has shown he can adapt and change, so it's now time to reinvigorate the offense with someone new.

Great Post
I honestly see a great team next year.  More so than this year in the simple fact that we will be decidedly less dependant on one player.  Not to say we will be better.  I think that we will have to be more of a team next season.  I'm amazed, though, at the depth of this year's team, given that most of the starters (from your projections) have had significant playing time and were not just role players, but key players at important parts in games.  That will really help us out next year.

While I will reserve judgement on how well they will do next year until I see the QB, I think we'll be just fine.

That said, I think our offensive game plan will be a tale of two seasons.  In the beginning, we will need to rely on the run, while developing the QB, and then mix in the pass more as the season progresses.  By the RRS, the QB will need to be strong and confident.

Where can we see next year's schedule?

QB's
They are not VY, but they all were sought after. So lets give Mack the benefit of bringing in good players. My biggest concern is that Chizik will become a head coach somewhere.

Chizik
I think he'll be here for at least one more season.  After that he should start getting sniffs from big time programs.

by the other Andrew on Jan 9, 2006 3:41 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

He never loses
What a stud. If he does in fact return for next year, Texas will be awfully tough to beat. We will be either way, but he really brings a great attitude to the team. I think he's as big a part of the change in Mack as Vince was.

More credit to Mack Brown. He lured a top SEC defensive coordinator away to come to Texas. I honestly don't ever want to hear anyone criticize Mack Brown as an overall coach again.

re: QBs
having a good solid QB is always good. But regardless of how good they were in high school or how high they were rated, they still have to play.

With that said, it looks like Texas loses two key offensive linemen as well. Where texas will get hurt next year will be the little things like false starts with the new QB's snap counts (Some at crucial times in a game). Or making bad check offs. Or bad reads. No matter how good they were in high school, they haven't seen the speed of the college game. And although they may have the talent, how will they think under pressure? Think or just react?

Furthermore, G Davis can't allow the young quarterback to do too much. The neophyte might want to be the next VY, but he is still too young to take over the game and force things to happen. When the QB starts pressing, that's when bad things are prone to happen. And how will these young QBs deal with the press and the burden of being the defending national champion?

by FreedomDip on Jan 9, 2006 4:45 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Honestly
How hard is it going to be to hand the ball off??

That is what the O looks like next year, and thats fine by me.

One more year
He is waiting for a big time program to give him a call, and those slots are filled for next year.

by Wells on Jan 9, 2006 4:51 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

GD
Please tell me you are kidding.

Those "big time slots" must be the pant legs of extra large elastic waistband blue jeans, because nobody is going to offer that guy a big time program.

GD will be going to the Pro's as a position coach. Nobody will ever offer him a big-time HC position.

He's been with Mack too long - and it's not healthy. Most assistant coaches move on after 5-10 years, but GD is like a fungus Mack can't cure.

Seriously, it's time for GD to move on and for the Horns to have a fresh playbook.

I love that he developed VY, but my instinct tells me that VY would have developed despite GD.
He seems like a nice guy, but time for someone new.

2006 Schedule
9/02 NORTH TEXAS
9/08 OHIO STATE
9/23 at Rice
10/07 IOWA STATE
10/14 SAM HOUSTON STATE
10/21 vs. Oklahoma (Dallas)
10/28 BAYLOR
11/04 at Nebraska
11/11 at Texas Tech
11/04 OKLAHOMA STATE
11/11 at Kansas State
11/24 TEXAS A&M

Those all look like wins to me, to be perfectly honest. Way too early to say, but we should be favored in every game. Even OU.

by Peter Bean on Jan 9, 2006 3:40 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Game 2 is where the Real QB will be Determined
Looking at the schedule, UNT will serve as a great warmup game and give Mack a chance to see both QB's in action.  The real test for Texas will come in week 2 with the rematch against Ohio State.

by ColtFan on Sep 1, 2006 11:19 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed
I agree with the general assessment above.  With all of the RBs and WRs coming back, along with most of the offensive line, scoring shouldn't be a big problem as long as we have decent play from McCoy or Snead (whoever starts, that is).  I just hope we don't start playing musical quarterbacks during the season.

10 of the 11 projected starters on defense saw significant playing time this year, so I don't see why the D can't be as good or better in 2006.

by AMB on Jan 9, 2006 3:51 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Don't Forget
Surely you guys can't be forgetting about Sergio Kindle at LB ... Derrick Johnson started by midseason his freshman year. Kindle is actually bigger and better now than Johnson was as a sophomore.

Supposedly, Kindle is enrolled in Spring classes. If you guys mention Snead as possible starters, then you must include Kindle, who's probably good enough to be the second best running back, too

by FreedomDip on Jan 9, 2006 4:22 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Absolutely
What was he?  The #1 LB recruit in the country?  The kid is just amazing...  I can't wait to see him fly around the field.

by GoHorns on Jan 9, 2006 4:25 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Great point, Dip
Kindle will be in the mix early and often. That does open the quesiton of where he'll play. Bobino, Kelson and Killebrew are all good, but room will be made for Kindle.

I'll revise my prediction and say that Kelson gets moved to strong safety to replace Huff, M Griffin stays at free safety, and Kindle joins the linebacking core.

Yum...

by Peter Bean on Jan 9, 2006 4:27 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Kelson was moved from safety
doubt he'll move back.

also, never use the word "yum" again unless you're describing ice cream or enchiladas.

by the other Andrew on Jan 9, 2006 4:30 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

But not ice cream on enchiladas
Only Trudy's could pull that off.

Kelson is likely staying put at OLB as long as Chizik is around, but remember Mack likes to "start" more than 11 guys on each side of the ball.  (In 2005, 3 CBs, 3 DTs, 3 RBs and 6 WRs were labeled starters each game).  Nothing wrong with 4 Linebackers rotating and staying fresh.  If safety proves a problem, then yes Kelson would be a possibility.

by Lincoln on Jan 9, 2006 4:35 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Why not move him back?
Kelson's got the speed and big hitting ability of Huff; I can see Chizik moving him back to make room for Kindle. Otherwise we're leaving too much talent on the bench.

And I'll say "yum" or any derivative thereof any time I please, thank you very much.

by Peter Bean on Jan 9, 2006 4:37 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Fun to find out
Kindle's destiny should be fun to find out.  He'll contribute immediately on defense, but where?  Likely at OLB, but you know every college with a 3-4 scheme would have loved a commitment from Sergio who can play as a OLB/DE.  Back in the 50s and 60s you wouldn't doubt that he'd be on both sides of the ball.

by Lincoln on Jan 9, 2006 4:30 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

From the DMN last weekend - Kindle Def POY
The 6-4, 225-pound senior scorched opposing defenses for 2,298 yards and 40 touchdowns on 218 carries as a tailback. And he spearheaded a defense that allowed only nine points per game, making 31 tackles behind the line of scrimmage despite dealing with blocking schemes designed to slow him.

by FreedomDip on Jan 9, 2006 4:34 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Interesting thought
If the Offense struggles next season, would they dare move Sergio to RB to breathe life in to the offense?

Remember, GD's offenses only work with a minimum of two-three 5-star recruits on the field.

If the offence struggles
It wont be because of lack of tallent at RB, we are full of that.

More games at home
4 out of 5 home games before OU should help the early game day development of our QB, whoever he is.

We also have 7 games at home this year vs 5 last year.  I agree running the regular season table is not out of the question, for now.

Also

This photo looks eerily similar to the ceiling of the sistine chappell painted by Michelangelo.

I have a feeling when Vince left in the limo after making his announcement, that he officially became ineligible to return for next season.  (A much better way to leave than Kwame Cavil and Aaron Humphrey.)

Moments after the photo was taken, the limo made a quick right and dragged Scott Ware for 17 more yards before stopping at a light.

I hate to do it
But I gotta throw the poor taste flag there.  Not cause its Scott Ware, but because that kind of shit has actually happened, and some bastards have killed people.

Just my 2 cents.

Michael Griffin?
Seemed like Michael Griffin had a really nice year.  Any reason he wouldn't be starting next year?
