It's That Time Again: Longhorn Fan Rooting Guide

With Baylor headed to Austin this Saturday for what's sure to be a lopsided beat down, it's time Texas fans start playing the Who To Root For game. It's only October, and this will change weekly, but it's time to start thinking about who the Horns want to win and lose each week if they're to have a shot at playing for the BCS title.

First of all, of course, all bets are off if Texas loses another game. So all of the below projections are based on Texas winning out. Which is by no means a given. With that caveat, let's discuss it.

Missouri - BON's newest rabble rouser MOLonghorn will be pleased to see this selection, but the rest of us need to start waving our pom poms for the Tigers the rest of this season. The Longhorns would benefit immensely from the Big 12 North winner being an undefeated, highly ranked team. If the Tigers beat Oklahoma in Columbia, and take out Nebraska and Texas A&M on the road, they'll have a great shot at being an impressive 12-0 heading into the Big 12 title game. That would likely leave the Tigers in the Top 10 of the BCS standings, which would mean a solid computer victory for the Horns should they win.

Ohio State - It's going to be awfully difficult for Texas to make it to Glendale if the Buckeyes lose. Unless Ohio State loses two contests - which seems unfathomable at this point - a Buckeye loss would be bad, bad news for Texas' national title hopes. A one-loss Ohio State squad almost assuredly stays ahead of the Horns in the pecking order, so Texas' best chance is to aim for a rematch.

Cal or Notre Dame over USC - The Horns need the Trojans to drop a game to move ahead. Both Cal and Notre Dame are likely to remain behind Texas if the Horns win out, but someone's still got to beat USC.

Anyone over Florida - The Gators have an inside track to the title game if they win out. Realistically, Texas might even need the Gators to lose in the regular season. A tight loss in the SEC championship game might not drop the Gators below the Horns.

Ohio State over Michigan - As hard as that it is to say - I really like Michigan's squad this year - if you're rooting for Texas to get back to the title game, you're going to have to cheer for the scarlet and grey in this one. That, or root for Michigan to lose to Iowa.

Louisville over West Virginia - For some reason, it's West Virginia that's captured the national attention, and because they've been a part of the narrative since the beginning (and remain so now, with two first place votes in the AP poll), they're the ones Texas needs to lose. Louisville's actually got the better resume, but if one of the two teams is going to get passed up for a one-loss Texas team, it's Louisville. Sad, but true.

This week in the Big 12 - Root for Oklahoma over Iowa State; Texas Tech over Colorado; and Nebraska over Kansas State.

And most of all, root for Texas to keep winning big. Really big.

Louisville
If the Cardinals beat WVU and stay undefeated, I think they'll jump UT in the rankings. I think they're going to have to lose to somebody like a Pittsburgh or Rutgers too.

Agree on the rest, but I think it would be hard to take a one-loss Texas team over a 1-loss Florida team unless Florida loses to somebody other than Auburn or Georgia.

If Texas wins out, I think we're headed to the Fiesta Bowl to most likely play Notre Dame which is about to drive me nuts. Never has a team deserved to go to the BCS less. But from what I've read, even if they lose to USC, as long as they go 10-2, they're a good bet to make the BCS. And they'll most likely do it without a win over an opponent who finishes the year in the Top 25.

Unreal.

Not so sure
Not so sure that Louisville would jump ahead of Texas. No one's talking about them, and as you well know from what you just said about Notre Dame, that's what the BCS is all about. I'd certainly sleep easier if a Pitt or Rutgers took out the Cards, but the only thing that HAS to happen is West Virginia losing. Louisville's more of a 50-50 proposition.

Per Notre Dame - you're right. It's the same story as last season, when their only quality win was in Ann Arbor. And that wasn't this year's Michigan squad. We saw what this year's Wolverines did.

I fully expect Notre Dame to be in the BCS, one way or the other.

Not holding my breath
I still think Florida is the bigger issue and with their schedule, they probably deserve to go if they finish with one loss or undefeated. Honestly, after last year, another Big XII C and a trip to a BCS bowl would be icing on the cake.

I don't see Mizzou going undefeated. For some reason, I think A&M is going to beat them this weekend and if not the Aggies, than for sure the Sooners or Cornhuskers.

We'll see, but for now, I think Texas simply needs to forget about the rest and concentrate on getting through the next 3 weeks. Man am I glad we didn't get NU in Lincoln this weekend. We needed a Baylor in between.

Question
If Ohio St and Michigan are both undefeated going into their game, and every one else has one loss, will the loser of that game be able to stay #2?  A late loss is harder to come back from than an early loss.

The computers may put the loser at 2...
but realistically the voters will drop them lower because no one wants to see the game that was just played happen again.

although...
that is what happened with Florida / Florida St., in 96 I think.

FL/FSU
I believe that they played the last week of the season. Then Florida smoked someone in the conference champ (Georgia???). Then something happened to Nebraska that I am a little fuzzy on. When that happened they rematched in the Sugar Bowl.

Missouri
Thanks for the props on this one.  I, too, would like to see MIZZOU march through their remaining schedule and take the North.  Since the Big XII Championship is being held here in KC, talk about my ultimate game!  UT v. MIZZOU!  My 2 favorite teams in a game I thought MIZZOU would never make.  I would still be leaning towards UT to win, though.
Hook 'em Horns! Go Tigers!!
