Around SBN: Notre Dame's Turnaround: How Have The Irish Done It?

The Aftermath

At last: chaos.

Rutgers' dramatic come from behind victory over Louisville bulldozed the one obstacle Texas assuredly could not overcome just by winning the remainder of its games. With the loss, the Big East is rendered irrelevant (fairly or not) in the national title picture.

We have now officially entered One Loss BCS Hell (or heaven, depending on your perspective), though for Texas, the surrounding scenery is hardly fire and brimstone.

Texas is by no means in the proverbial Driver's Seat to the national title game, but the path to Nirvana has taken a sharp turn from inordinate, which is where it was prior to Louisville's loss. While Burnt Orange Nation celebrates the newfound possibilities that exist because of Louisiville's loss, it's important that we not think too much about what must happen around us and focus very carefully on that which remains within our control.

Texas' path to the title game is dramatically different than that of every other team still in The Conversation. While most every other team must focus on navigating the muddy waters of their remaining schedule, Texas must focus on that, plus something else: style points. No team is as dependent on the quality of its victories as Texas is because no team is as dependent on the human voters as Texas is.

Style points: not just for fashionistas anymore.

Just about every team remaining in the national title conversation - except Texas - has a marquee game remaining on its schedule. USC will face Notre Dame and California; the Irish and Bears face USC. Florida must win out and defeat the winner of the SEC West. Ohio State and Michigan will square off. Only Auburn sits in a similar position to Texas, needing to impress human voters with indubitable victories over remaining opponents.

Texas can't help itself with its remaining schedule. Either Texas A&M or Nebraska will lose on Saturday afternoon (they play one another). Texas either faces a B+ Aggie squad on the day after Thanskgiving, or it faces a B+ Nebraska squad on the day of the Big 12 championship. Either way, Texas' opportunity lies not with defeating A&M and Nebraska, but in dominating each and every game that it plays between now and the last chance that any human voter has a say in BCS voting.

Texas is playing for style points.

With Louisville's loss, the race for the second spot in the BCS game will be an amalgam of computer calculations and human voting. Texas can't and won't improve its stead to the top two in the former; its best shot at securing a spot in the national title game lies in sufficiently impressing the human voters that can factor what they see Texas do with their own eyes.

To make a long story short: It's Showtime. The road to the BCS Title Game lies in Texas finishing at #2 in the Coaches' and Harris' voters polls after the Michigan and Ohio State game. And to meet that goal, and do it with enough buffer to fend off the impending computer weakness, Texas must not only win, but look great doing so.

So when you tune in on Saturday and Thanksgiving weekend and on December 2nd to watch the Big 12 championship game, don't just root for Texas to win... Root for Texas to be in peak form, steamrolling their opponents in a way that tells voters, "Yes, this is the 2nd best team in the nation. They are the one loss team I vote to play for it all."

Anything less will be insufficient.

Alright, PB, I'll be the first to admit I was wrong.  I've been saying for 10 days Rutgers had no chance against Louisville.  Their defense really stepped up tonight.

Congratulations to Coach Schiano.  I just hope Rutgers finds a way to hang on to him after the season.  And congratulations to a gutsy RU team.  Do you think Ray Rice sewed up a trip to New York City tonight?

Coach Schiano
Anyone have any thoughts on Schiano returning to Miami at season's end?

Schiano is a Jersey guy so moving to a more high profile program after this season is not a definite. He is also a former coordinator at the U and has been very successful recruiting in south Florida at Rutgers. Imagine who he could sign if he was at Miami.

I think he would be foolish not to consider the Miami job if offered. And Miami would be foolish not to put out some feelers.

Larry Coker will be gone soon. Miami has two road games left and a home game with BC. If they continue to play like they have been, they could realistically drop all three and finish 5-7. No bowl and a new coach for sure.

Schiano says all the right things
... about building a strong program at RU that will contend year after year, and about being loyal to the school and the state, but you gotta take that with a grain of salt.  There's no way RU can match the kind of salary that Thug U likely pays.  I hope he stays in Piscataway.  It's a nice story, and he's a nice guy.  But I think he's gone after the season, especially if Rutgers wins out.

COLT
We need Colt to continue to make a splash with the media.  Ray Rice, in my opinion, assuredly deserves the Heisman, but Colt's quest to garner an invite to NYC is directly related to our MNC hopes.  Like the Bean said, the media needs to be completely convinced that Texas is the number two team in the nation due to blowouts; this might go without being spoken, but Colt's Heisman Hopefulness is a rather apposite part of the Horns' BCS conquest.  If Colt falters, then despite our margin of victory (via JC or SY), Texas falters.  Sometimes, the Heisman Campaigns can overshadow a winning program.  Chris Leak is attempting to accomplish this now.  Let us hope that Colt continues to ace his remedial competition, and that Colt is THE reason we win, whether this is fair or not.

Why I like Burnt Orange Nation..
How many posts on other boards could work apposite into the conversation?

Rutgers' D was tenacious
They played last night like we've been expecting our D to play all year.

AFTERMATH
The computers are crap! Anyone could see that L'ville was not that good and the Scarlett Pimpernel just proved it! Southlake Caroll is better than any damn Big Least team.

Florida will lose again. Lets hope the "ole ball coach" can trip them up this week.

If we take care of business we only have to worry about the USC/Cal winner if they run the table.

What will Bhols do
and all of the other writers that argued a 12-0 BCS conference team deserves to go to the championship game.  Will they make the same arguement for Rutgers?  If they don't isn't that a bit hypocritical?

by Wells on Nov 10, 2006 10:33 AM CST reply actions

Overreaction
This is why it was so silly for all those folks to overreact to Louisville's victory over West Virginia. They've painted themselves in a corner, and now probably will get cute with Rutgers. But the same lesson applies: Rutgers now only has one quality win.

The Scarlet Knights deserve a ton of credit for a great game and a great season. But it'd be wise to hold off the BCS Parade.

Exactly
that is why there is something to be said for your resume method.

But even more, by justifying their overreaction by stating that any 12-0 BCS conference team deserves to be in the championship game they have made themselves look even more ridiculous.

Typical Bohls
I've said it before, but the man is a weather vane.

"Fire Greg Davis.....no, wait, he's the best in the business."

"Reggie Bush for Heisman....no, wait, I demand a revote for VY"

"Lville to MNC.....no, wait, they lost last night"

I understand changing one's opinion based on what plays out, but I get the feeling he's just blowing with the breeze sometimes. He wets his thumb, sticks it in the air and takes his position.

Naive
Call me naive, but I think if Texas runs the table and finishes second in both human polls that they deserve to be in the BCS championship game for two reasons: (1) we are the defending national champions and hold that title until another team wins the BCS game.  It may be a little bit Mayberryish, but we deserve the right to defend our title;  (2) our only loss would be to tOSU, early in the season, with an untested redshirt QB who has since matured at warp speed.  I have no doubt in my mind that if we played tOSU today, the outcome would be totally different.  The Horns definitely have work to do and they must take care of business, but they deserve a shot at defending the title.  If we don't get to go, then a 1-loss team like Florida should go since, like Texas, they have to play a conference championship game.  All the pundits and ESPN guys will be drooling all over themselves for USC to get in, but let's not forget that they lost to Oregon State - we lost to #1 Ohio State and Florida lost to #11 Auburn.  The quality of team that you lose to should factor into the final equation in my opinion.  Nevertheless, the happiest group of people in the nation last night was the BCS - they never wanted to see UL in the title game.

Hook 'Em and for God's sakes Hook 'Em hard these last three games and we should be able to punch our ticket to the BCS Championship game.
