Confirmed: Snead Leaving

It's taken a good number of phone calls, but I'm pretty sure that Jevan's leaving.  The news reports that we're seeing are correct. Jevan Snead will transfer - most likely at mid-term, pending Mack Brown's approval.

What does it mean for Texas?

In the short-term, it's a pretty big inconvenience. I've already stated that I'd prefer Colt McCoy be shut down for the rest of this season. The temptation to rush McCoy back now is greater, assuming Snead isn't an option to play in Texas' bowl game.

Staying with the short-term, if McCoy's not good to go (or if the staff wisely decides to play it safe), who can Texas turn to? You can forget burning Sherrod Harris' redshirt - that won't happen. Who does that leave? Texas either plays walk-on third stringer Matt McCoy or goes with Quan Cosby. Yes - flanker Quan Cosby.

Going with Cosby would make for great entertainment, but of course if I'm advocating shutting down McCoy out of a desire to see the 2007 team protected, it hardly makes sense to advocate starting Cosby behind center. I'm almost to the point of suggesting that Texas' decline its bowl invitation. Honestly, there's just nothing left to gain. No experience for Snead. Too much risk with McCoy's injury....

Decling the bowl invitation won't happen, obviously, so we'll have to discuss the best way to handle this, but I'm already petrified of sticking McCoy back in a game his pinched nerve isn't ready for.

F\/ck

Best of luck to Jevan Snead in his future endeavors.

How much longer can Mack avoid holding a press conference?

by PB @ BON on Nov 29, 2006 11:44 PM CST   0 recs

he's not going to hold one
until he lets snead out of his scholarship.  he's not going to sit there and refuse to answer questions about that.

how long does stuff like that take?

by billyzane on Nov 29, 2006 11:54 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

If/when he does...
...man that's going to be a long press conference. With coaches leaving, potential replacements, players leaving, bad losses, there is alot to ask about. It doesn't seem like Mack to duck the media and I'm not going to think that this means anything is wrong, but there sure is a wealth of topics to discuss, seemingly added by the day.

To answer, I think the latest would be on Monday. By then, everyone will know where the Horns will go for the bowl game.

by Longhorn13 on Nov 29, 2006 11:58 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

Is it possible?
There's no way Mack would be bolting for the 'Bama job is there?  All this silence is making me very nervous.  Yet, through it all, guess who's still around....Greg Davis....go figure!!!

Matt McCoy at Quarterback
How can I put this nicely?  Well, Matt McCoy is not good.

It goes without saying that we will be severely handicapped with Matt McCoy at QB for the bowl game.

With the lack of heart, inspiration and desire our team seems to play with while facing adversity, it is safe to assume we will be embarassed in a bowl game with Matt McCoy at QB.

Not to look too far ahead and forgive me for the the above negativity, but this will undoubtedly hurt our pre-season ranking and will add to the already damaged psyche of the team to end the season on a 3 game losing streak.

I was in complete agreement that we should shelve Colt for the rest of the season until we got this news about Snead transfering.  For the aforementioned reasons, I really think Colt needs to play in the bowl game if he is at all ready to go.

by Top Jimmy on Nov 29, 2006 11:56 PM CST   0 recs

why couldn't this have happened
with Matt Nordgren on the roster?  he was my favorite player since he got to college.  he went from 8th string to the only backup on the national championship team, despite possessing no discernible football skills.  now that's determination!

and who can forget how he taunted Baylor last year by dribbling the football on his way to a touchdown run in crunch time? [note: crunch time is defined as the last 5 minutes of the game, whether or not UT was winning by 50+]

what i wouldn't give to see Nordgren play a whole game.  he'd dribble his way to 70 points.  I question Matt McCoy's football dribbling skills.

by billyzane on Nov 30, 2006 12:06 AM CST to parent up   0 recs

Norgren
I think he tried out and made the Philadelphia Eagle's roster (for a week or so).

Terrible move
For the past few months I've held out hope that Jevan would wait atleast one year, win the starting job in the fall, and the team would be better because of it.

I think if Jevan Snead's talent meets maturation he could be one of the best QBs in the country when surrounded by all this talent. Colt McCoy will always be efficient, but never dynamic.

I hope this isn't true.

Hard to Blame Sneed But He's Still a Team Member
It's hard to blame Sneed for wanting to transfer.  McCoy looked like he was still hurt in the game against A&M; his passes didn't have a lot of velocity.  If the coaches would rather take their chances with an injured player over you when you're healthy then they're sending you a pretty strong message.  I might want a fresh start somewhere else too.

That said, he's a member of a team.  I think he needs to stick it out through the bowl game irrespective of his future plans.

confirmed?
Is there somthing tangible we can see that actually confirms this, or is it still second hand rumor. I'm not doubting you or your sources, just wonering if there's somthing hard we can see or put our hands on.

Buck
I've gotten as close as I can get without actually being able to say that Snead told me he's leaving. Still, at this point, a denial from someone official would likely have surfaced. It looks like he's gone.

I'm not sure I'm as confident as you are that Snead could surpass McCoy, but it looks like we'll never know.

My best guess for Snead is Houston.

by PB @ BON on Nov 30, 2006 12:05 AM CST to parent up   0 recs

Houston?
Maybe he can use his rocket arm to toss up an alley oop to Dion Dowell?

by whoopspat on Nov 30, 2006 12:07 AM CST to parent up   0 recs

The U Of H coach
is Art Briles, who had a son play here for a year, who coached at Stephenville, where Snead went, who once saw Kevin Bacon at a 7-11 in Paramus, NJ.

So you know Route 17??
Not many people know where Paramus is. Its just up the road from me. Which 7-11? :-)

Paragon
My client's office is right at the south end of Route 17, Lyndhurst.  Basically the intersection of 17 and 3.  I've been living at the Sheraton Meadowlands for over a year now, and I've shopped at the Paramus Mall a few times.  How the heck did you end up in this neck of the woods?

by patienthornsfan on Nov 30, 2006 2:26 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

whoa whoa...
you've been living in a Sheraton in the Meadowlands for a year?!?  that sounds like the worst thing ever.

I live in Rutherford. I was a the Sheraton yesterday meeting my accountant. Small freaking world. That's gotta suck. you're always welcome if you get tired of hotel food!

She must be pretty awesome, to get you to agree to swap DC for Paramus!  :-)

Thanks for the offer.  Fortunately this is my last week on the project, so I get to go back to Austin for a few weeks.  Wish I'd known you were in the area - would have been great to watch some USC games with someone who actually cares about the result!

I am blessed.

Next time you're in this neck of the woods let me know, you're always welcome.

I probably came off as an ass and I didn't mean that. I wasn't trying to call you a liar. I've just been following Jevan's career the past few years and was excited to see what he could do as a starter.

You're right he may not win the job, but of the two we'd get a really good QB. What if when Colt has to play these same south teams again he struggles and never looks like he did in 06. I just don't like going into a season with one option, unless that option's name is Vince Young.

by Buck on Nov 30, 2006 12:16 AM CST to parent up   0 recs

Agree with you there
I wrote earlier today that depth at quarterback is a luxury - not a given, and not something to be casually dismissed.

Losing Jevan is a big disappointment, even if Colt bounces back from his injury to full health.

by PB @ BON on Nov 30, 2006 12:18 AM CST to parent up   0 recs

Zing
How would you feel if instead of using you, a 3rd-string senior backup QB, they used a 2nd year WR.  Youch.  Reminds me of my friend who played 2nd string QB for the whole season only to see my other friend who played safety start when our starter got hurt.

by whoopspat on Nov 30, 2006 12:05 AM CST   0 recs

Maybe I don't understand
But if he left at mid-term, could he play in the Alamo Bowl, since it's before the end of the year?

by mldatx on Nov 30, 2006 8:37 AM CST   0 recs

Sherrod Harris
Why not burn the 'shirt?  I don't agree with you there at all.  We have two stud QB's coming in next year, Sherrod will likely be the backup to Colt in Spring unless Chiles is coming in early, give the guy a chance to get a head start taking snaps with the first team.  We are no longer in a crisis when it comes to QB depth, so we don't need to save a year of eligibility.  Besides, this team needs the extra month of practice the NCAA gives you when you go to a bowl.  It would be ludicrous to pass that up.

On the positive side, this eliminates any possibility that we lose Chiles and Brantley in the 2007 class.

Remember that poll I posted way back before the season, PB?  About which scenario was most likely?  I'll have to see if I can find it, but I'm pretty sure most BON'ers voted for a Snead departure.

by patienthornsfan on Nov 30, 2006 8:39 AM CST   0 recs

I want to see Brantley soon
I don't know much about stingers but it looks like you can't touch Colt McCoy any more without a stretcher getting involved...

by kicker on Nov 30, 2006 8:50 AM CST   0 recs

help me understand this
In the middle of the season I could understand Snead's frustration, but things are totally different now.  Snead has a good chance to prove himself in a bowl game, as well as in spring training.  Does he think he can't beat McCoy out of the starting job or that the coaches will not give him a fair chance?  Was he upset he didn't play during the A&M debacle, or was his mind already made up?  He has a chance to play for a NC here but certainly not at UH. Can anyone shed some light to Snead's reasoning here?

Snead Denial
Texas quarterback Jevan Snead denied a report Wednesday that he has asked for a release from his scholarship in order to transfer to another school.

The report cited an anonymous source close to Snead.

Asked Wednesday night if he'd requested a release, Snead said: "No, sir. There's nothing happening right now."

Asked Wednesday if a transfer was something he might consider, Snead said: "I don't know. I don't feel comfortable talking about that right now."

This would explain
The curious timing of all this.

by PB @ BON on Nov 30, 2006 10:23 AM CST to parent up   0 recs

Timing
Speaking of timing, doesn't it seem like there is always some distraction right before the bowl game?  Remember a few years ago that player who was discovered to have fake credentials right before the bowl?  Then there have been players suspended, etc.  Guess it happens to all teams.

Didn't seem to hurt us last year
wasn't there an RT-and-one-of-the-griffin's "scuffle/shouting match" last year on 6th just a couple weeks before the rose bowl? it got a lot of talk going, but nothing really happened.

cajones
while he may have potential, it sure appears that he doesn't like competition.  he backed out of florida because tebow signed.  now that colt has proven himself, snead backs out again.  he probably wouldn't consider sam houston because bomar is there.  to find out where he will transfer take a look to see where there aren't any other qb's on the roster.

by ethan on Nov 30, 2006 12:02 PM CST   0 recs

Tebow
I was under the impression that Tebow and Snead were similar quarterbacks, style-wise.  Can you really blame him for backing out when there are other options where he would appear to be more of a shoo-in?  Did anyone really think that McCoy would be Texas's QB of the future?

by whoopspat on Nov 30, 2006 12:19 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

Stupid to decide based on who is already there
Ryan Perilloux - anybody remember his name?  No. 1 or 2 QB prospect two years ago.  He was totally and completely committed to UT until the last minute, when he changed to LSU because he didn't want to play behind Vince Young for two years.  Well, look how things change.  Vince leaves a year early, and Ryan is stuck behind a pretty good QB in Russell.  Ryan should have gone to UT.  He'd be starting this year.

Snead, if he was smart, would stick it out at UT and see what happens.

by jwill on Nov 30, 2006 3:52 PM CST   0 recs

How is that a confirmation?
It's just a rehash of every other story that's been published in the past 24 hours.  No new news, still just an "unnamed source" who is supposed to be "close to the situation".

I'm not saying it's not a done deal.  But until the University or the athlete makes a formal announcement, it's just speculation.  And I doubt it's going to be cleared up any time soon.
