Two Cents: One Game Quarterback Controversy

Texas has reported that they will not break Sherrod Harris' redshirt for a bowl game, so now the rub. We've already asked if we should play Colt or not, but assuming Colt can't play, who should play quarterback in the Alamo Bowl?

On the one hand, we have walk-on Matt McCoy who, though he shares a last name with Colt, has none of the talent/experience. On the other there's flanker Quan Cosby, and to a lesser extent Billy Pittman. Both were high school quarterbacks and would suffice in a pinch.

Two questions: Who should play and who will play?

For my Two Cents I'm for using a base formation of 3 wides (Sweed on one side, Pittman and Shipley on the other) with Quan in the shotgun and JC/SY offset slightly behind him, then we can experiment with the Arkansas craziness of having Pittman and Shipley coming end around where Cosby could hit Sweed or hand off to Shipley who can run and Pittman who can run and throw, and then experiment with direct snaps to JC/SY to keep the running fairly vertical, but that's just crazy.

That could happen...
If Greg Davis called in sick.  I like that look, though.  Who is Arkansas's OC? Or is it just Nutt calling the plays?

... Can we steal them?

Gus Malzahn
is Arkansas' OC, straight from a High School head coaching job to OC in the SEC

it's GD, remember...
he's averse to doing anything slightly creative.

if colt can't go, i'm sure he'll go with matt mccoy to start and if we can't get anything going in the running game, he may switch to Either Pittman or the Quan to provide a running threat at QB.

as for Arkansas' system, it's great if you have good RB's and terrible QB's...which appears to be the case if Colt can't go.  They basically run a high school offense, which makes sense since their OC is Mitch Mustain's old high school coach.

Arkansas' system
for all of the hype, having a hobbled RB throwing deep passes is not a good idea.  I think that interception cost them a bunch of momentum and maybe the game.

Just 2 years ago
Ohio State went through the same exact thing -- and played in the Alamo Bowl.

Zwick was injured and for some reason Smith didn't play. They used a hobbled Zwick sparingly and would rotate in Ginn out of the gun in a single wing formation.

The next season they were back on top playing Texas in Columbus.

To answer the question, I would go with Quan. I think he can actually still throw the ball and make wise decisions. I'd imagine the coaches feel the same way.

I thought that
happened over the summer.

For some reason I thought Smith was hurt.

No
He took about 4 grand I think.  But now that he paid that back and sat out of a meaningless bowl and a weak non-conference first game, he is going to win the hiesman.  I think Tressel is dirty, but some how he never gets called on it.

I had heard that
their freshman year Holmes and Smith pulled some woman out of a car and dealt a few Mike Tyson love kisses.

I think it was right before the Michigan game several years ago. Holmes did the punching and sat out for the 1st quarter.

If anyone can find an article, I'd love to actually substantiate this story from something other than Michigan co-workers.

Cheaty McSweatervest
on the previous note:  How appropriate would it be if GD, with Quan in the QB spot, suddenly began lining up in the power running game we have been waiting for all year?  Classic, I wouldn't put it past him.  The spread with Quan would be interesting...I don't want to lose to Iowa with Matt McCoy.

by kicker on Dec 4, 2006 2:25 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

I think even
Matt McCoy would agree.

If we're
using a WR to run the offense, I wouldn't count on too many 3 WR sets.  My intuition is that we're going to see a lot of 2 WR sets out of the eye.  I'm also guessing we're going to see a return to: Run left, run right, throw horizontal pass for 2 yard game, punt.

I'm sure the wild man that GD is will mix it up a bit, maybe run left, run right, throw horizontal pass for 3 yard loss, punt.  But that's about the extent of the craziness.

If the D or special teams don't score, then I forsee a shutout.

Alright mister optimist
You realize we are playing Iowa right?  Iowa who lost to Northwestern and Indiana?

by Wells on Dec 4, 2006 2:32 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Yup.
And you do realize that this team is headed by a Texas native who isn't in a Longhorn uniform and is actually a pretty good QB.

Pretty good QB playing with chip on his shoulder vs this pass D means they have the ability to score bunches.

With GD calling plays from his phone book that he has yet to get past the table of contents in, coupled with our QB situtation,  worries me a bit.

My only hope is that Quan or Billy just draw plays out in the dirt.

by Hornbud on Dec 4, 2006 4:07 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

it's a golden opportunity...
Think about it: Assuming Colt won't (or shouldn't) go, GD should be bulletproof for this one.  He won't be, of course, but he should be.  And he should plan like it.

If the offense stinks, everybody but the crankiest fans in the world (which, unfortunately for him, he has to deal with constantly...) will cut him slack, since all he's got is a career walk-on and a kid who hasn't ever played qb at the college level, and hasn't played it at all for five years...

Pull out all the stops.  Try everything you ever dreamed up in your late-night Thai food and beer-induced nightmares.  Don't worry about shaking the QB's confidence long-term, since there isn't going to be any long-term there.  Scrap the year, and just go with what feels good.

There actually is a precedent.  After Marty Akin's senior year, Earl's junior, the Horns ended up in the Bluebonnet Bowl against I think Colorado.  They'd had a disappointing year, with Akins getting hurt the game before aTm, and then going out on the first play on a remarkably dirty hit miles away from the play (an aggie trademark now).  And after years of nothing but the wishbone, after falling behind early, they started doing remarkable things, like throwing little screens and hitches to Earl.  Earl in the open field was a beautiful and scary thing.  Much fun was had.  GD should go back and watch that game, and then think about people he's got available.  And then, just have some fun.

yeah but
A&M almost lost to a service academy and K-State lost to Kansas.  I am still not comfortable playing Iowa given all the disastrous events of the last few weeks...when it rains in San Antonio it tends to pour.

by kicker on Dec 4, 2006 2:38 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

I would agree a bit
but do you think we are not going to score a point on offense?

by Wells on Dec 4, 2006 2:50 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

nah
we will score, but how many is it gonna take?  That is my biggest worry, couple that with having GD in the booth with his east-west running game and predictable screen shit, --scary--.  Our defense needs to really make this game a mea culpa for the K-State game and whip some ass.  Front line pressure, some sacks from Robison and Crowder, some push from Big Frank.  I am just worried sick that if we fall behind because of defensive, mostly secondary fuck ups, we won't be able to string together enough offense to shore up a V.

Snead and Brantley
I don't think I've seen any discussion on this site yet on how Snead leaving will affect (or not affect) the rumors surrouning Brantley and his committment to Texas (or conversely the multitude of coaches and one sooner trying to woo him away).  Any thoughts?

by texas ex ohio on Dec 4, 2006 3:10 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

I don't think there's really much to discuss...
It certainly can't hurt.  Brantley knew when he committed that he was coming into a young, and very deep depth chart.  And he was confident enough to pull the trigger anyway.  Now that it's a little less deep, I don't see how it wouldn't just take away a little more of the scenario-spinning opposing teams are trying...

Mack and GD should look north
Im in no way saying im impressed with the sooners.  But Bob Stoops changed that team this year.  They still made mistakes but that was a different team that played NEB than the one that played Texas.  Mack and GD could use some pointers from Ole Bobby boy.  Change the scheme a bit, quit trying to use the tired old plays that arent.  This season, 9 wins or not is shot to hell, have fun and run some of the crazyiest stuff CFB has ever seen.  We lost to Kstate, which lost to Kansas, go figure, and A&M, i just threw up a little, but im ok.  So why not come out and just have a grand time and see how many highlight reels we can make?
