Vince vs. Hoge
For so long a time there was Vince and there was Hoge, each living separate lives, the one as the next coming of Jesus, the other as a washed up player turned ESPN analyst, but, as Vince opted to enter the fraternity of professional quarterbacks, Merrill Hoge lodged his formal complaint against the whole thing...and it was on.
Now for the first time that I'm aware of... I bring Vince and Hoge together to settle this once and for all. Enjoy.
[A Vince sized hat tip is owed to Matt at BevoSports for having the forsight to tape Merrill Hoge's pre-season comments, or else knowing someone with the aforementioned forsight. Also thanks to utexasclan.com for the game film. I couldn't have done this without their assistance.]
Merrill Hoge is now the most recent victim of Blatant Vinceyoungery

Nice
If Vince can hit the film room and practice his timing with a QB coach he will be unstoppable.
My only worry with Vince was his anticipation on routes. Too often he waits until the WR is already breaking from their route to throw the ball. My theory is that he is so tall that he gets caught watching it all develop and thinks he can strong arm it in there. (most QBs can't see what is happening and rely on the timing)
He will need to start throwing the ball before his WRs break in order to become a more polished QB.
It's kind of like Jordan finally adding a jump shot and outside range to his skill set.
VY is going to be a holy terror in two years.

Hoge
are his comments about fantasy Vince in his mind?
let Hoge see himself in 2 years and he will quit before they fire him.
by ut1ou2 on Dec 6, 2006 1:59 PM CST 0 recs
Great Job
Hoge should be fired for being plain dumb. The worst part is that he refuses to consider any argument that highlights the success of VY.
I bet (and this is coming from a Texan fan) Merrill Hoge will be the next GM of the Houston Texans.

As far as I know
That image is burned in my mind - the tight end comes across in motion, taps the center, sets up on the strong side, and Q runs up the gut for 200 yards a game against Texas. Now that he's gone, I have nothing but respect for how he chewed us up and spit us out.

Some sense of reality
Vince hasn't even finished his first 16-game schedule. The Titans won't be making the playoffs. This is far from an affirmation. Let's see how things are going after the end of his 3rd season.

Wikipedia entry on Hoge
He is now a ridiculous clown with no credibility. His co-workers, like Jaws, are beginning to wonder where the hate for VY is coming from. Hoge continues to dog VY and can't admit he is a douche and so very wrong.

by amcdavid on Dec 6, 2006 9:54 PM CST 0 recs
kudos
It wouldn't surprise me if VY ultimately forces Hoge out of espn. Hoge's already consumed with denial, and the only step left is madness. Absolute madness.

The steps are...
At first, we tend to deny the talent we see before us. After all it is difficult to comprehend that which has never before been seen.
Anger.
The person may then be furious at the person who inflicted the vinceyoungary or at the world, for letting it happen. He may be angry with himself for letting the event take place, even if, realistically, nothing could have stopped it.
Bargaining.
Now the person may make qualifications saying things like "sure they win but in spite of the QB", this is a form of compromise or bargaining. At this point they have usually made such an ass out of themselves they are reluctant to readjust their thinking, but qualify it so as to defend their original idiotic position.
Depression.
The person feels numb, although anger may remain underneath. He begins to realize he is an idiot, but his misplaced pride will not let him move forward. Often times this can be masked by lashing out at Jaws or raising his voice to the camera. This tends to draw attention to him and distract from his feeble argument. Of course this is also characterized by crying himself to sleep and wetting his pants when the Titans make yet another 4th quarter come back. Most adults progress very quickly through this stage, the more immature and the clinically insane may take much longer if ever.
Acceptance.
This is when the anger has tapered off. The person simply accepts the reality of the vinceyoungary.
