I'm Better Than You Are And I Know It

Our loyal reader and ambiguous fan UCLAwarren got me thinking when he took on The King of the NBA, Michael Jordan. Well, really he just said he didn't like him and that he took offense to Jordan's cocky attitude. After briefly defending Jordan, while (of course) slipping in the pleasure I derive from watching Barry Bonds play, it got me to thinking about cocky, supremely talented players in sports.

I love them. I wish there were more of them. Now, before you get all uppity, hear me out.

Who would you rather have on your team in their prime: Barry Bonds or Alex Rodriguez? Michael Jordan or Kobe Bryant? Vince Young or Chris Simms? I don't know about you, but I'll take Bonds, Jordan and Vince every day of the week and twice on Sunday.

Why do people care if these guys are pricks to the media? Why do people care if they say crazy things like "We're gangsta." Why do people want someone who acts like Cal Ripken when they can get someone who mashes like Barry Bonds? Please don't give me that role model crap. That's a parent's job, not an athlete's.

The point I want to make, though, is that the athletes I'm advocating win because they know they're the best. Jordan absolutely dominated his opponents, not only with his game, but with his mind. That attitude was as important to his success as any physical talents he was blessed with. Vince Young? I think we can all attest to there being a VY attitude, and I don't think there's one person in Texas who'd trade away that championship for someone a little more, uh, mainstream, for lack of a better word. My favorite anecdote from the season was the 4th and 30 play against Missouri. VY's got a little bit of that championship `tude. There's no mistaking why we won the Rose Bowl. It wasn't our affable coach, boys and girls.

One of my top ten favorite moments in my sports lifetime? Reggie Miller's miraculous, single-handed Knick slaying comeback, followed by the F YOU choke sign to Spike Lee. Of course, Reggie never got his ring because of that MJ fella, but you had to love that attitude. 8 points in 11 seconds.

And Bonds? He may not have a ring, but it's certainly not his fault. He's taken his team to the postseason seven times. In the 2002 postseason, if he didn't draw a walk, he hit a home run. Four in the World Series alone. So spare me the "choke" nonsense. Simply put, Bonds is the best hitter any of us have ever seen, and probably the best hitter to ever live. He strikes so much fear into opponents that he drew 232 walks in 2004. His on-base percentage: .609. Folks, you can go ahead and laser those in to the record books. Never gonna be topped. If OPS is your bag, he's got it covered, too. 1.422.

I'll never forget this SI cover from back in 1993.

He may not say it to the media, but I'll guarantee you that inside his head it's "I'm Vince Young and you're not."

So the media can have their darlings. I'll take the best.

Okay, I'm done. Flame away. Just don't wear a "We're Texas" shirt if you do. That would be arrogant. And we can't have that, now can we?

Let there be no ambiguity about it
I am a UCLA fan first and Texas fan second.  I'll root for Texas against every team EXCEPT UCLA.  I'm sure those of you who went to Texas and then to another school which was good in another sport would be Texas fans first and your other team's fans second.

And now back to your regularly scheduled blogging.

Which makes no sense
You have a chance to be a Texas fan first... and you're passing?

Color me confused.

Wouldn't you rather some of this and this

than this and this?

Maybe
You should check out this page before you start talking...

http://www.ncaa.org/champadmin/champs_listing1.html

Total Championships:

UCLA: 97
Texas: 38

How about in their best sport:

Texas: Men's Swimming and Diving - 9
UCLA:  Men's Volleyball - 18
(not to mention that UCLA also has more championships in Men's Tennis (16), Men's Basketball (11) and Women's Softball (10) than Texas has in any sport)

So you may have better teams in the big-money sports THIS year...but if you're into the whole "bandwagon" thing, that's just a shame.

Back when
UCLA beat the Horns 66-10 (97 or 98?), I was so pissed that I was rooting for UCLA for the entire 4th quarter. I had to buy that game via pay per view, and watched the whole thing "to get my money's worth," so I was determined to get some enjoyment out of it somehow.

by orbitboy on Mar 1, 2006 12:42 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

It was 66-3
If I remember correctly.  I think I was a junior or senior back then.  I think we also won like 61-21 or something along those lines the following year...

Ken, Michael, Vince
Peter- As a Barry Bonds fan, you have dwelled on the "negatives" that most fans could care-less about.  I don't care that he is not media friendly.  I don't care that he doesn't have a ring.  You ask which player we would want from their prime?  Well, the funny thing about Bonds is that his prime was as he approached age 40.  The guy on the SI cover you posted is not the same guy stalking Ruth and Aaron.  The guy on the cover weighs about 30 lbs less and is a few hat sizes smaller.  With all those stats, Bonds is better than most baseball players at one thing...cheating.  He can hit the ball, but without the enhancers how many of those pop-ups fall in front of the warning track instead of McCovey Bay?  Barry's numbers will be surpassed...by someone who is a better cheater than he.

By the way, if we're talking about prime, I'll take Junior Griffey.

by Lincoln on Mar 1, 2006 10:54 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

Griffey is no Bonds
Lincoln, you're so wrong it hurts. Arguing about Bonds, I've learned, is fruitless. People's minds are made up, but you're wrong. Griffey Junior can't hold a candle to Bonds. Not even in the discussion, frankly. Griffey's -best- OBP season during his prime was .408. Bonds -average- during the 1990s (prior to your benchmark of the later years of his career) was .436.Griffey's best SLG season, .674 in 1994, is topped by Bonds' best during 1993, of .677. Back when he was still "skinny." I could go on and on and on and on about why Griffey isn't even in the discussion with Barry Bonds, but let's keep going.

And Bonds, despite whatever you have been led to believe by aforementioned media that effing hates the guy, got big and strong by (like Jordan) being the most ridiculously hard working player in the major leagues. Bonds is not the greatest hitter ever because of steroids. It's a ridiculous argument. Totally ridiculous. Sammy Sosa (may have) hit lots of home runs because of steroids. Sammy Sosa is -not- the hitter Barry Bonds is. This goes waaaaay beyond home runs.

Did you ever think that the media that hates Bonds might be guiding the way you're thinking about him? Have you done any serious reading on the guy to determine why he's as good as he is, or why he's as big and strong as he is?

Never mind the fact that steroids weren't even banned in the game until 2003. Many argue that amphetamines are a far bigger help to a player than steroids ever could be. Not to mention the fact that steroids have ruined many, many more players careers than they have supposedly helped. Think Jason Giambi regrest taking `roids? As soon as he did, he tanked.

Anyway, I knew all this was coming. We can keep going if you'd care to. But no matter what you -choose- to believe, Bonds is the best hitter that ever lived. It's a shame so many people missed the show.

by Peter Bean on Mar 1, 2006 11:17 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Not to mention
Bonds' six MVP awards (he should have eight) are twice as many as anybody else has won, and he's the only member of the 500 home run club with 500 stolen bases (or 400, for that matter.) Mix in eight Gold Gloves and we're talking about one of the five greatest players anyone has ever seen.

It's craziness to try to taint Bonds' performance with the steroid speculations. He's never failed a drug test and in 2004, with the full drug policy in place, he batted .362 with a .609 OBP, while slugging .812. Meanwhile, other sluggers that were "steroid tainted" fell off a cliff.

Hmmm...

Maybe saying he is what he is because of steroids is a stupid thing to say.

Sorry, it's not personal Lincoln. I just get angry (and saddened) when people piss on Bonds. He may have brought it on himself to some extent, but it's still a shame.

Bonds
I have no prob with Bonds...I guess because baseball is pretty much reliant on single players, and not as much on teams.

By the way, if you think MJ's teammates were nobodies (like Kobe's are this year), consider that he had Pippen (one of the NBA's 50 Greatest), Rodman (one of the best rebounders of all time), and Kerr (the leading 3-point shooter, accuracy-wise, of all time), so saying that MJ did as much carrying of his team in the 90s as Kobe has to this year is ridiculous.  Even Horace Grant and John Paxson played better than who Kobe has had since last year (and that includes the underachieving Lamar Odom...I'm not saying they were better players, but they did play better than Odom on those teams).  When MJ was playing in the 80s, he managed to get to the first round, but couldn't really get much further than that.  In his years before Pippen got there, he got to the playoffs twice and lost both times in the 1st round.  So, I don't really think Kobe is very far behind were Jordan was.

Jordan makes the whole team better
all Kobe does is make himself look good, that is the difference.

I could write paragraphs and pages to the contrary
...but will simply agree to disagree about what we are looking for in a player and how we measure stats over the past few years.  Hook'em.

Re: I'm Better Than You Are And I Know It
I am a Giants fan  AND Longhorns fan. I remember that SI cover well--that was the year I became a Giants fan! Bonds was UNREAL that year. Much like Vince. With Bonds, it honestly seemed like he never did anything amazing unless the game was on the line. That article even mentioned how it seemed as though Bonds was "toying" with the rest of the league that season. Much like it seemed with Vince this year.

As far as the criticism Vince is getting right now, all I have to say is "Underestimate him at yor own peril." Is he the next Jordan or Bonds? Time will tell. I'm not going to predict that, but I'm not going to bet against it, either. I retired from the "Vince-doubter-club" a long time ago.

One last thing--being a Giants/Longhorn fan in the 90's was always equally exciting and heartbreaking. Now it the Giants' turn, dammit!

Glimmer of hope
Orbit: welcome! You have a brother in arms here.

A bit of hope for you: I suffered through years and years of no titles from my teams.

Then...

Texas wins the Rose Bowl.

Steelers win the Super Bowl.

So maybe this IS my year. And hopefully, Barry's year.

In my case
I think I'm working off a lot of bad karma from being a lifelong Cowboys fan. The 90's where great to be one, but god did it make me feel guilty!

I'll tell you this much: I was living in San Francisco in 1993, when the 'Pokes beat the 49ers and won the Superbowl. There is no feeling quite like walking around SF wearing an obnoxious Cowboy Super bowl champs t-shirt. Like I said, I'm paying now....but those smug 49ers fans had it coming big time.

Smug
It's funny you say that, because when I was in high school (90-94), all the Cowboys fans in my school (there weren't many, since I grew up in the Bay Area) were the most smug people I had ever met.  I grew up a 49ers fan, and I couldn't stand those Cowboys fans, which made me hate the Cowboys even more.

No, I remember very distinctly
I guess to some degree the fans take on the personality of the team. During the Landry era, I'd have to say that Cowboy fans were very smug. But in the early to mid-'90s,

49ers fans = smug

Cowboy fans = obnoxious

Think Joe Montana vs. Michael Irvin.

or

Eddie DeBartolo vs. Jerry Jones.

or

George Seifert vs. Jimmy Johnson.

by orbitboy on Mar 1, 2006 2:22 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah
That is fair.  I guess when the Cowboys were beating the 49ers every year in the NFC Championship, there was a bit of both.  I guess I was too young (elementary and middle school) to remember how people acted about the 49ers in the 80s.

Sigh... It's sad: people are missing the greatest hitting show ever to walk the earth.

Tune in people. You might never get a chance to see someone this good again.
