Out of Conference Wish List

In the spirit of Kyle's quest to improve out-of-conference scheduling, BON reader 54b thought it instructive to ask what other readers' "Wish List" for games they'd like to see Texas play. Because it's worthy of its own topic, I thought we'd bring it to the main page for discussion.

What's your Top 5 home-and-home non-con wish list look like (apologies if this subject has already been beat to death)...

I'm basing my list on team choices on tradition, recent successes and a home stadium in a place I'd like actually like to visit...

Michigan (The Big House)

Penn State (Happy Valley)

Tennessee (Rocky Top)

Georgia (Hedges)/Florida (Swamp) tie

Alabama (Tuscaloosa)

Honorable Mention: LSU, Auburn, Wisconsin, FSU, and USC.

Funny how it's all Big 10 and SEC schools. BTW, tOSU would have been tied for #1 if we weren't playing them right now.

Your turn, readers.

Top 5
  1. LSU - So we can knock that bitch Ryan Perrilloux around. Raucous stadium and crowd.
  2. Michigan - Big. House. Enough said.
  3. Georgia - My biases here shine through. A chance to mingle with all those talented UGA bloggers I've been getting to know, plus a helluva program.
  4. Notre Dame - We've played them as recently as 1995, I believe, but I wasn't in any position to attend back then. Let's do it again.
  5. Alabama - Tradition, tradition, tradition.

The God Squad
Notre Dame is on the short list, but the pain of 1995/96 was still too fresh...and believe me, I know what I'm talking about.

LSU intrigues me, but I've heard Batton Rouge is harder on away fans than the Houston Nutt House in Fayettenam (which was 200 times worse than Columbus despite what anyone says)

A UT fan in Arkansas
is going to be worse than a UT fan at OSU.
Go up there in a Michigan uni for that game, then I think you would have an informed comparison.

Granted...
but given the name of this Web site and the statement in question, I think it's understood that this is all from a UT fan's perspective unless otherwise stated.

Regardless, I'll be real interested to see what the USC contingent has to say about their visit to Arkansas, especially Mr. Big Boi from Troy.

Great Thread...
Thanks for thinking of us 54B.

A little wishful thinking is good now and then.  Arkansas will be an interesting game for us this year. They should be better while SC will not quite as good as last year.  The Boi better lay low down there because they are not real tolerant of the alternative lifestyle.

My list:

1-    This one is obvious, TEXAS! I want a rematch!  And I want it in Austin. We had the "home field advantage" last time, so it's only fair. Besides, all of have you been hospitable to me here so I'd have to set up a happy hour or something for the BON faithful.  I've heard some stories that a number of SC faithful were not very hospitable, what an embarrassment. I'm pretty sure that would not happen in Austin.  Of course if we lose again I 'm heading straight for the border and will open up a fishing camp in Baja. I couldn't bear the abuse again1 ;-)

2-    Florida, I've been to the swamp once before, with a friend of mine who went to UF. It was my first SEC experience. WOW! They know how to party, an absolute zoo.  It was a great atmosphere and it really got me back into college football.

3-    Alabama, as was said earlier-Tradition.

4-    LSU, Great program. It's the game we should have had 2004. Oh well, better late than never.  Besides putting a little money in local economy is a good thing and I love New Orleans.

5-    Navy, I know this is an easy one, but it is for sentimental reasons. I was stationed there in 80's. It was the reason I never went back to the west coast. I still have many friends that I keep in touch with who went to Annapolis; some are in the gulf today.  It's just a beautiful part of the world.

Honorable mention:

Someone mentioned West Point in the thread. It is an absolutely mesmerizing campus but being a Navy guy I can only give them an honorable mention.

Georgia, I've heard stories about the "cocktail party".  They are a passionate crowd and have that southern charm as well.

That WAS the plan...
Then they moved the game to Sun. nite.  Sunday was supposed to be my get away day to head to Fla. to play some golf with a customer.  So we are trying to figure out schedules, but that's the plan.

How about you?

Dont be down on your fans
other than their seeming inability to tailgate, they seemed to be courteous and very loud when they needed to be.

I understand your point
And it was not my intention to bash my on fans. But I did here a few stories of bad behavior and it bothered me.

I have heard nothing but good things about UT fans over the years and I would hope that SC fans can learn from that. Thanks for pointing it out.

As for the inability to tailgate- well who wants to eat warm sushi?

We're not perfect, far from it
No need to apologize for your fans, if you came to a game in Austin, believe me, you'd see more than your fair share of "ugly" Longhorns, particularly the ones who've been at the bar (present company included).

That's why I've always enjoyed the road games...most of the UT fans who travel act like they've been there and have a lot of respect for the game, the venue, and the opposing fans.

by 54b on Apr 19, 2006 2:07 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

If wishing made it true...
  1. USC -maybe on Thursday night
  2. Va Tech-can anyone say Plastic Surgeon Frank?
  3. Florida -imagine the speed on that field
  4. USC -Game Cocks over under on Visor tosses?
  5. Tennesse -we'll show 'em who the real UT is.

My Top 5
Notre Dame
Miami- I hate those guys and want to get revenge for the Cotton Bowl.
LSU- Because I need an excuse to go to my favorite 3rd world state.
Michigan
Kentucky-this only applies to me since my family went there, it would be nice to have braggin rights.

by billb on Apr 18, 2006 2:13 PM CDT   0 recs

Breaking News
You've already got bragging rights. Even in basketball.

by PB @ BON on Apr 18, 2006 2:15 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

The last time they played in basket ball
Kentucky won, It was the Maui classic, BJ Tyler was on that team. My parents went and I have not heard the end of it.

Out of the box
I'm using location and asthetic atmosphere as the criteria.

1)Army - its like visiting the Vatican and has by far the most electric atmosphere

  1. Colorado State - fly fishing in the morning, game in the afternoon and Brew pubs by night. The stadium itself is nestled in a mountain peak above the campus. Its pretty incredible.
  2. Cincinnati - its the oldest football stadium, which I guess is cool.
  3. Northwestern - I can walk to the game.
  4. Notre Dame - In laws have season tickets on the 50 yard line, nuff said.

Colorado St
Why goes to Fort Collins when we already go to Bolder every 4 years?  That is like someone wanting the Aggies over Texas because they want to see central Texas, it just should not happen.

and
there is nothing increadible about Fort Collins.

Ft. Collins
I pretty much agree. Every summer as a kid I used to go to a camp on campus at Boulder, so my heart is with the Buffies and that town.
However, Ft. Collins has two things going for it; 1) this pizza place called Woodies that is buffet style, but lets you order anything you want (for example. Chocolate chips with carrots); 2) CSU has better access to fly fishing (Poudre river).

Also, Boulder is full of dirty hippies that drive me nutz. Love the town, but the people are little fake sometimes.

Most of the best breweries are elsewhere. The Left Hand brewery is my favorite - and I think its closer to Boulder.

Walker, Texas Ranger -- C.D. Parker: And how are you doing, little partner? Lucas Simms: Walker told me I have AIDS.

by EYESofBEVO on Apr 18, 2006 3:31 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

You have to look past the trustafarians
So the dirty kid on the hill that is begging for quarters or nuggs is most likley going to get in a car that is worth your yearly salery because he spent his monthly allowance on some rocking KB, is that any reason to hate the whole town.

Yes, the Poudre River is some good fly fishing.  But, there is still some good fly fishing around Boulder, just head up a canyon of your choice.  Plus, in Boulder there is much less chance of seeing unnatural animal-man love on your fishing trip.

I still love Boulder
That whole "tri-metra" area or what ever they call it has everything a vacation needs.
Camping
Scenery
Brew pubs
Shopping in Denver/Boulder for the lady travelers
Good food
Tons of outdoor activities

The wife and I take trips to see friends out there and usually do a 4-5 day weekend trip. It never gets old.

And
You couldn't even fit the UT band in Ft. Collins' stadium.  Boulder's just as accessible to fly fishing, although, you may get hit by a marshmallow with a battery in it.

They usally just throw those at each other.
Try going to a game during a snow and see what happens.

it's fun to fantasize....
  1. Notre Dame - traditions galore
  2. LSU - finally shut the SEC up
  3. Michigan - keep the big ten mouths shut
  4. Miami - might be the most entertaining match-up here
  5. Virginia Tech - those hokies are so cocky
Nothing new, really. But would definitely be a lot of fun.
...til Gabriel blows his horn

by BigTexBD on Apr 18, 2006 3:49 PM CDT   0 recs

Some good, some ugly
  1. Penn State - As long as Joe Pa is still around
  2. Georga - That would be a fun game
  3. USC - just so we can beat them again
  4. Auburn - another good SEC match-up (LSU is getting love too, but not mine.  They're still coached by Les Miles)
  5. Duke - because I hate them and would love to see them get trounced.

by GoHorns on Apr 18, 2006 3:56 PM CDT   0 recs

Beating Duke in Basketball...
is like beating Michael Jordan in a home run derby: so what, its not thier sport.  No interest for me there.
I also agree with 54b on the Notre Dame thing.  I was at that game in 95, but didn't make the trip up to Southbend the next year.  For all the USC slobberjobs that the media hands out, ND is still the king of undeserving ESPN reach arounds.  I hate them.  My list goes-
  1.  Tennesseee: that boat tailgating thing looks entirely too cool not to try at least once.
  2.  Miami: beating up on future prison inmates has got to bring a smile to your face; party scene is muey caliente!
  3.  Alabama: Run Forrest, Run!
  4.  Michigan
  5.  Penn State: Even Paterno walks to the games there.  That has to be pretty cool.

by Brandon 97 on Apr 18, 2006 4:32 PM CDT   0 recs

For the tailgaiting alone
Washington Huskies - I want to play at Washington and "tailgate" on a boat outside the stadium.

Ole Miss - They probably drink a lot before their games.

LSU @ night - They probably drink a lot more before their football games.

Georgia - Athens is kinda like Austin.  Plus I bet they drink a lot before their football games.

by the other Andrew on Apr 18, 2006 5:23 PM CDT   0 recs

Hmmmm
Penn St. - Joepa...awww
Georgia - they've been dominating the SEC over the past 5 years, i want to take on their champ.
Miami - Old minidynasty, meet the new minidynasty
Florida - Is Urban all that?
Iowa - I've been dreaming about these guys on vicodin and codeine...oh jesus mono, what are youd doing to me?
Fight On! Beat the Razorbacks!

by USCLink on Apr 18, 2006 6:20 PM CDT   0 recs

I would pick...
I think I only saw one mention of them, but FSU is (as far as I know) the only I-A school we've never played.  So...

FSU - We've never played them; Bowden will be dead soon
USC - Just to try and even up the all-time record
Florida - To see who is the better state school (not academically, of course)
Notre Dame - I hate Notre Dame with all my heart
West Virginia - Let's give these fellers a chance to lose on the big stage

by Broccoli on Apr 19, 2006 8:31 AM CDT   0 recs

tOSU
Yes, if we weren't playing Ohio State right now, there is no doubt  an OOC against the Buckeyes would top the list.

NC was fun I was there too and wrote about it:
http://54bblog.blogspot.com/2002_09_14_54bblog_archive.html

As for Viriginia, we did that rodeo in 95/96. Phil Dawson probably had the most memorable field goal in UT history to beat the Cavs in 95 and then we got paid back in spades in 96 when we went up to Charlottesville and got our brains beat in.

by 54b on Apr 19, 2006 9:25 AM CDT   0 recs

My Top 5
  1.  Florida - the Swamp
  2.  FSU - Dinosaur Coaches Tour Part One
  3.  Penn State - Dinosaur Coaches Tour Part Two
  4.  Michigan - the Big House (and we own the Big 10)
  5.  USC or UCLA - whichever one gets us back to the Rose Bowl
Patience Restored

5 more
  1. Notre Dame
  2. Boise St. - the blue field, early on schedule though
  3. Bama
  4. Florida
  5. Michigan
