I Just Don't Get It

Courtesy of the terrific Braves & Birds blog, we get our first peek at Phil Steele's Top 25.

  1. OU
  2. Auburn
  3. Louisville
  4. USC
  5. Texas
  6. Miami
  7. Notre Dame
  8. OSU
  9. VT
  10. FSU
  11. Michigan
  12. Tennessee
  13. Arkansas
  14. Georgia
  15. Iowa
  16. Cal
  17. WVU
  18. Clemson
  19. Boise St
  20. Florida
  21. LSU
  22. Nebraska
  23. Utah
  24. Purdue
  25. Oregon
I. Do. Not. Understand.

I also don't care much.  Just an FYI, as lots of folks love Da Steele.

I just can't see OU's offensive line getting it done.

Discuss.

I wonder what Freedom Dip
thinks about LSU being 9 spots behind Tennessee?
The Harbinger of Deleted Diaries

FreedomDip doesn't think much of the rankings ...
Considering the fact Boise State lost its coach and is steele ranked ahead of Florida, LSU, Oregon and Nebraska ... and that Louisville is top 4 for the second straight year ... or, Nevermind. Who the hell is Phil Steele? Doesn't his sister (Danielle) write romance novels and his brother (Dick) do porn?

Not only that....
... but LSU 40, Miami 3

Steele rankings?   LSU 21, Miami 6

For reference
Last year's rankings by Mr. Steele

1 USC
2 LSU
3 Purdue??!!
4 Louisville
5 Texas
6 Miami
7 Michigan
8 OU
9 Ohio State
10 Georgia

So lets review; two of these teams didn't even finish ranked, 5 of them didn't finish anywhere near the top 10 and aside from USC not a single top 10 ranking was even close.

Steele puts a lot, in fact almost his sole criteria, is on schedule, ala Purdue and Louisville. It seems like he looks at talent next.

So basically Phil is like the rest of us, he's 50/50 on predictions.
I think I'll start flipping coins and save the scratch on his publication.

Yeah
The preseason rankings are -only- important insofar as the narrative is concerned. Texas has no problem here, so it really doesn't matter where we start.

Win and we're in.

It's all conjecture
With all the publications coming out soon I'm sure that there will be a ton of arguments over where each one has us ranked.  We need to remember that the only ones that count are the Coaches poll and the other one I refuse to acknowledge.  What's funny is everyone is saying beat "the" OSU and Oklahoma and we are fine, but those spoilers from Lubbock scare the heck out of me since we have to go to htat toilet bowl otherwise known as Jones Stadium.

Kinda interesting how
he drops West Virginia all the way to 17, considering their returning starters that beat Georgia in their last game.  That team has confidence to back up their cockiness now.

And Ohio State at 8 is definitely a little different from every other publication/personal opinion out there.

This is a good preseason top 25 to get people talking.

Which is smart
I mean, considering the variance in preseason and final rankings, there isn't much downside in taking risks and making contrarian picks. It gets people talking, makes you stand out, and if you hit a lucky star... you get cred for being some kind of super genius.

The bottom line is that these preseason books are just like diet books: they all follow a standard narrative. Pick a champion, hopefully someone that generates a little buzz/sells some magazines, write catchy & ambiguous text about 120 teams you know a little bit about each of.

Tell you what, though: I'm not buying any this year. If I want an outsider's perspective on a team, I'll go to SMQ, and if I want an insider's/obsessive's view, I'll turn to my favorite blogger of that team.

why
why is notre dame not number 1, and how is auburn number 2?

by Olemissreb451 on Jun 9, 2006 3:31 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

why would ND be #1?
I mean, sure this is the "everyone has a flaw" season, blah blah blah, but when has an offensive line as depleted as theirs ever won a championship?    It's nice to have a good coach, star QB, and a tall receiver.  But when your front line could have 3-5 true or redshirt frosh, you're done.  Don't plan on adding to the trophy case till 2007.

I think your best arguement is
"everyone has a flaw".  This is the year where there are no glaring Football Gods.  That's it.  Pre-season prognostication this year is worthless and a waste of time.  Until we see teams strengths and weaknesses after about 3-4 weeks, then we can probably make a case for a title contender.
