The BLOGGERS Are The Problem In Journalism? Ha!

Holy F*$@#*# I'm annoyed.

Ladies and gentlemen, meet Rick Bozich of the Louisville Courier-Journal.

Hi, I'm a lazy liar.

Mr. Bozich decided to write a pice titled "Internet Filled With Venom For Coaches." That's fine, of course - the internet is filled with lots of venom for coaches. I see it every day.

What you do NOT see, however, is venom for Mack Brown at Burnt Orange Nation.

And yet, how about this choice quote from Bozich's piece:

Or silly Longhorns fans. You decide. My search took me to a site named www.burntorangenation.com, where a fan delivered this rant:

"Even though he was behind the national title last year, I find myself not fully believing in Mack Brown ... With Number 10 (quarterback Vince Young) gone, I find it difficult to believe that Texas will slip back into its very good, but not championship-level, rate of 10 wins a season."

Throw the bum out. Immediately. Maybe Fred Akers or John Mackovic is available to return to Austin.

Excuse, me, Rick, but where, on Burnt Orange Nation, did you find something like that written by a Texas fan?

Ohhhh, wait. I think I remember. It was in this post. Which was a DIRECT QUOTE from this post at the Rakes of Mallow, which is... a Notre Dame site!

Worse, I pulled the quote to defend Mack Brown. The very article Bozich decided to use to prove his point was an article which dealt with the opposite phenomenon: using the internet to praise your coach.

That's dishonest, or lazy, or both. This site has been anything but venomous towards Mack Brown. I'm offended. I'd like an apology.

I'd urge the loyal readers of BON to send Mr. Bozich an email at rbozich@courier-journal.com, standing up for this site, and our support of Mack Brown. We will not be tarnished by this man.

Update [2006-8-22 15:32:25 by HornsFan]: Mr. Bozich has corrected his story and issued an apology to me via e-mail. I consider the matter closed. As the story originally read, this site was made to look like some petty, spoiled, non-grateful, Mack Brown hating message board. Thank you to all of you who know better, and wrote in on my behalf. Back to normalcy.

Even though its upsetting
there is something funny about it.

This guy must be the old school journalist that will find himself on the outside looking in, when traditional newspaper media finds itself with ratings comparable to machine part brochures.

I'd say he'll be red in the face when he realizes his mistake, but that cheap glowing rash-like sun tan of his already has him the shade of a strawberry.

You should be honored
You get to embarrass a journalist who, in the process of complaining about blogs, proves exactly why people like you are making people like him obsolete.

by Red Blooded on Aug 22, 2006 11:26 AM CDT   0 recs

Maybe
Sounds like he could be a ghostwriter for Ann Coulter or a speechwriter for Bush.

by orbitboy on Aug 22, 2006 11:44 AM CDT   0 recs

I emailed him
I also CCed the president of the paper, the editor, the sports editor and a public relations person. here is my email: "I read burnt orange nation daily and the site is very supportive of Mack Brown. The quote you used was from a Notre Dame site and was on the Texas site only to allow Longhorn fans to dispute it. I do not know if you are lazy or sloppy but I would think neither trait would be acceptable for a so called journalist. You need to issue an apology to burnt orange nation. (and no, retracting your story is not enough). I wonder who edits this paper and allows a journalist to take a statement out of context and use it in the exact opposite meaning as it was intended."

This is the second version, the first implied his mother had sexual relations with a mule.

by billb on Aug 22, 2006 11:55 AM CDT   0 recs

Problem
All this guy was doing, apparently, was get ticked off about something and then Googled up a few phrases and came across that one isolated comment from a non-Texas fan.

It is sheer laziness, and having actually been a sports journalist for three years, that's pretty poor on his part. You won't get a retraction, but if nothing else he should apologize on the paper's blog and offer to engage in a dialogue with you.

by Jmac on Aug 22, 2006 11:58 AM CDT   0 recs

I emailed him
but was somewhat sarcastic.  Afraid he may take my email as a true compliment or worse yet, grossly misquote me as glowing review, I explained to him that I had used sarcasm and he is everything wrong with print media nowadays.  I probably should've defined the word "sarcasm"...

My email
Dear Sir,
I have to say, after reading your article and seeing what you posted, do you actually read what you post? Do you actually read what you cite as a reference? I would have to give that a resounding NO!

I Your piece on Longhorn fans being annoyed with Mack Brown really stoops to a level that most people try to avoid stepping on.  understand you have to meet certain timelines and also as a journalist have to tickle the fancy of as many people as you can. That doesn't give you the right to miss read and to miss interpret information and publish it to give people a bad name.

I for one have to say shame on you. You really should read your references' more and also should think about what you say before you waste trees and peoples minds with unfiltered garbage!!

by Rigger on Aug 22, 2006 12:18 PM CDT   0 recs

WOW
Even his apologies are bull shit this is what I got

Thanks for your note. I have apologized the burntorangenation.com

thats it nothing else what a tool

by Rigger on Aug 22, 2006 12:34 PM CDT   0 recs

Me too
That's what I got. I checked the CJ site and this one and STILL do not see the apology. Of course we already determined he is a liar...

by billb on Aug 22, 2006 12:39 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Impressed...??
I think we should all be very impressed that a guy from Kentucky can actually spell....and type also!  Apparently though he can't operate the scroll bar and can only view what fits within his screen.

I wouldn't worry too much though.  I would think a newspaper in Ky ranks well below ANYTHING related to burnt orange on the journalistic scale.

He should embrace Burnt Orange Nation!  His skin tone screams it!

While we're sharing, here's a comment I posted on the website.

<<<Internet message boards are a total waste of time, money, and cyberspace.>>>

Yet, here you are, posting anonymously on an internet message board.

The problem with your statement is that Burnt Orange Nation is a legitimate site providing valuable insight, analysis, and information about Texas sports.  Newspapers had their chance to embrace this newfangled technology called the internet, but they kept their collective heads in the sand and are now trying to catch up.  It may be too late.  Especially when bloggers such as Peter Bean are showing much more responsibility with their brand of journalism than Mr. Bozich is with his.

My guess is that Mr. Bozich didn't care enough to read what he was misquoting or had an 18-year-old intern find something on the internet for him.

Getting to the source of the matter - the disgruntlement with Mack Brown only exists among those people outside of Austin who are convinced that it was Vince Young only who delivered the National Championship.  Longhorn fans are constantly having to defend Mack Brown and will do it for as long as he is our coach.

A little more time and effort provided by Mr. Bozich would have proved that.  But I'm sure he was more interested in "shocking" his readers with unfounded "facts" than actually delving into the truth.

lol, that's funny man about his skin and burnt orange.  Look at that dunce, what a hack.  Looks like a used car salesmen, not a writer.

Journalists are lazy
I came across an article this morning by a paid journalist that said PSU cornerback Justin King got burned for 33 yards on the last play against Michigan last season to give up the winning touchdown. In fact it was Alan Zemitis who got burnt for 12 yards. How can you miss something that obvious? I mix up facts sometimes, but I'm a blogger doing this as a hobby. These guys get paid. It's their job!

I suspect this guy came up with an idea for a story to bash bloggers and went looking for the first google hit that came up. I wouldn't write to him. Write to his boss!

Denied in the press box -- for good reason
After reading the column, this post and all the comments, I can only come to one conclusion:

People love reading and contributing to the fan banter of a message board. They've done it for years. But bloggers will never be respected in the one place they want it most -- the press box.

College sports information directors hate bloggers more than mainstream journalists, because they know while newspaper reporters aren't perfect, they're a helluva lot more professional than grammatically challenged bloggers.

by Arklatech on Aug 22, 2006 1:06 PM CDT   0 recs

They know this how?
Because they invited a blogger who went stark crazy and ran around naked in a press box?  What exactly is your definition of professional?  Is being professional doing your job you're paid to do accurately?  Because as this hillbilly has shown, facts clearly aren't important.

And seriously, if you're going to talk about grammar and use the word "helluva" in the same sentence, then I don't even know why I bother...

Hey Now....
Let's don't tarnish the slur Hillbilly by using it on this guy.

My email
Hey Dave,

You might want to head back over to Burnt Orange Nation. While I'm a WV fan and blogger for WV, I have come to know Peter @ BON, and read his site daily. Not only has he not been venomous toward Mack Brown, it's a rare occasion that he is venomous toward anyone. Well, anyone not wearing an OU. In fact, he's been very helpful to me as I have built my blog and blogging skills. I think an apology, or at least a retraction is in order here.

Hate to bring this up ...
... but the poor guy's name is actually Rick Bozich.

by Jmac on Aug 22, 2006 2:20 PM CDT   0 recs

CHECK OUT HIS SITE NOW!!!!!
It seems he has done some quick editing.

Silly me.

My search took me to a site named www.burntorangenation.com, where a fan, most likely of Notre Dame, delivered this rant:

"Even though he was behind the national title last year, I find myself not fully believing in Mack Brown ... With Number 10 (quarterback Vince Young) gone, I find it difficult to believe that Texas will slip back into its very good, but not championship-level, rate of 10 wins a season."

Throw the bum out? Not yet. Peter Bean of burntorangenation defended the Longhorns' coach from attacks by outsiders on his site.

No Thanks...
Texas doesn't compete in the Hillbilly Olympics...although I'm sure your billybobsledding team is quite impressive.

But instead
you get to play Rutgers and Connecticut because you're stuck in the Big Least.

Matthew...
Remind me again which team went to the NIT last year, and which to the NCAA Sweet 16?

Remind me again which team won the Rose Bowl last year, and which team lost in the Toilet Bowl - I mean, Toyota Gator Bowl - last year?

If you guys beat Miami on September 16th, come on back here and talk your smack.  Until then, you're just another over-rated Institute of Hillbilly Education from the Big East like your kissing cousins from WVU.

"You smell that? Do you smell that? Burnt Orange, son. Nothing else in the world smells like that. I love the smell of Burnt Orange in the morning."

And L'Ville
plays two over-rated teams in Miami and WV.  Get over yourself.

by GoHorns on Aug 22, 2006 3:20 PM CDT   0 recs

Hmmmm.....
I've seen the Louisville skyline (or lack thereof), and not impressed.  Plus, you arguing on a Longhorns website?!?!?!  The issue is resolved, so drop it.  Go home to your toothless wife and 8 kids whose names all start with Billy, and let us big boys get back to the business at hand...intelligently discussing the bliss that is Texas athletics!

BTW, Louisville-metro pop. is 1.2 million according to the 2005 census, and Austin-metro is 1.4 million.  This is according to Wikipedia...go, read (if you have that ability), enjoy!

No mas Matthew
The conversation sunk from debate to nasty, useless, sh*t talking.

Matthew has been banned/erased.

Bean
Based on the most recent post, I am politely requesting this douche be handled.

"Arguing on message boards is like running in the special olympics. "

Then he goes on to say: "Look at Kentucky's and Louisville"s all time stats and compare   no comparison"

Is that not an arguement?

by GoHorns on Aug 22, 2006 3:41 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Yeah
Definitely a black eye for the Courier. Please take this as an apology from everyone in the city of Louisville. There's a thread on our rivals site that is razzing Rick pretty hard.

Again our apologies.

Louisvillian Here........
I come in peace honest!

First off I'm not here to debate the sizes of our metropolitan areas, nor to defend the merits of the Louisville athletic programs.  I'm quite comfortable with both.  I'm not even here to argue this absurd 'hillbilly' notion....anyone who has been to the Derby City knows this is not accurate.

Anyways, back to the point.  Bozich obviously made a (big) mistake but I'm quite sure it wasn't a vicious one.  He just dropped the ball.  It would appear, to me at least, that he simply didn't do his research on this one.  As another poster on this site mentioned he probably just did a basic google search and ran with it.  Irony at its finest given the subject of the column!!!  I will say that I think Rick Bozich is a good guy and a pretty decent columnist as well.  Admittedly however his popularity in our fair city isn't exactly 100% but hey, he IS a sports columnist!!!

Good luck to the Horns this season and congrats on last year's national championship.  For those of you who aren't too familiar with Cardinals football don't be too surprised to see us in the BCS this year.  Who knows, maybe the Horns and Cards could collide come January.

Oh, and by the way come stop over at InsideTheVille.com if you're interested.

Here's our take on Bozich's article:

Discussion amongst fans of other universities is not only welcome, but encouraged.  Thanks for stopping by guys.

I have family in Frankfurt and Lexington, so you won't see me dogging the state of Kentucky any time soon.

Nice to see My Morning Jacket fans in Texas.  Not a big surprise though considering Austin's music scene.  What did you think about Z?  I prefer the older stuff but the album really grew on me.  The guys usually come back home once a year or so to play a show here in the Ville.

Hey I like this place...
Did you ever hear of "The Seattle Seven"?  That was me... and six other guys.

Yes Lebowksifest is one of the many things helping to keep Louisville a beacon of weirdness in a place where one might not expect it.  Nothing quite like sipping on white russians while bowling and trading Big Lebowski one-liners.  Did you attend the gathering in Austin this past May?

http://www.lebowskifest.com/

Thanks for the link to the My Morning Jacket performance on Letterman.  I hadn't seen that yet.  Their live shows are unbelievable!  Louisville actually has a pretty good indie rock scene.  Here are just a couple of local bands I really like:

http://www.myspace.com/luckypineapple
http://www.myspace.com/liberationprophecy

But MMJ and Lebowskifest are just two of our many great exports.  Hunter S Thompson and Muhammad Ali aren't too shabby either I suppose.

And as for Mr. Bozich, well, that's okay because he's from Chicago anyways.  Ha!
