Early Conclusions

#1 vs #2

It?s somewhat of a rare treat to get a #1 vs #2 matchup during the regular season, less rare overall with the advent of the BCS. Still, the Longhorns (barring an unfathomable collapse by Texas or Ohio State in the season opener) will participate in their second #1 vs #2 matchup in three games. Once more, they?ll be considered the challenger. We don?t yet know the AP Preseason Poll rankings, but at least by one of the polls, we?ll have ourselves a 1-2 matchup.

Regardless of where each team is ranked in the AP Poll, the winner of the game will, almost without doubt, find themselves ranked #1 on September 11th. The only thing that matters in these rankings is that you?re starting within striking distance of #1. Texas will be.

Whoops. The Coaches Got Bomar?d

The Sooners? hold on the #5 spot is tenuous, at best. Certainly, the 13 first place votes will vanish, regardless of what happens in the opener against UAB. We?ll save a fresh round of jokes for then.

Notre Dame Already Controversial

Despite nine first place votes, the Fighting Irish are tied with USC (one first place vote) in total vote points. Why? They?re clearly being ranked much lower on some ballots. Their delta score, along with Oklahoma?s (13 first place votes), is relatively high. With skeptics already abound, losses for both teams may be more heavily penalized.

Biggest Head Scratcher

Virginia Tech at #16, no doubt. This is lazy voting that reflects a tendency to overrate programs of traditional success. The Hokies have no business being ranked ahead of Iowa. And on that note, one of the top ten things I?m most excited about leaving DC is: no more Virginia Tech fans. They?d be pitiful, if they deserved any pity. It?s a gross school, in the middle of nowhere, with nasty maroon colors, and backward fans. Sound familiar?

Big 12 Breakdown

About what you?d expect. The top four perceived teams (TX, OU, Nebraska, Tech) are in the Top 25. What I?m most interested to see is what happens to Texas A&M. They very well might start the season 9-0, or 8-1 (loss to Tech). But they aren?t actually going to be any good. I?ll laugh if they back their way into a ranking, only to get humiliated in November.

Other than that, I?m not expecting any other Big 12 teams to make enough noise to be a part of this discussion. The only team with a lot of solid talent that could work their way into the picture is Iowa State. The problem for them, though, is an unforgiving schedule. They?ll need to give the ?Horns a competitive game on the 23rd of September to set the right tone.

Its just exciting to see
one of the "main stream" polls come out.

It's natures way of saying that the college football season is just around the corner. Like an old friend coming to visit.

More like an old girlfriend coming to visit
One whom you can't get enough of, but takes too much out of your life and you have to end it after some period of time. But, while it's on, it's on, baby.

especially
when that girlfriend leaves and cheats on you for an entire offseason, but you still take her back because you love her so much.

This isn't an allegorical confession, really I promise;)

Tech
I'm surprised Tech is rated so low.  I guess they're going to have to prove themselves again.  Tech's recruiting has improved every year.  They're still not getting elite program recruits (mostly) but they're now getting 3 and 4 star kids consistently and this is the first year that their senior class consists mostly of 3 and 4 star guys.

Re: Tech
Three of their first five games are road games that are going to be pretty tough: at UTEP, at TCU, and at A&M (although I don't see this one being as tough as others might).  If they can get through that stretch without a loss, they could really move up.  I think they have a decent shot at an 11-1 type of season, but it'll probably be more like 9-3 with losses to TCU, Texas, and either OU or Iowa State.

I think a lot of it
reflects the inevitable question mark that every team with a new QB receives. However, if any coach has earned the right to avoid such negative speculation, it's Mike Leach. He's managed to turn relative nobodies into record breaking quarterbacks. Cumbie, who was a walkon, will join BJ Symmons and Kliff Kingsbury in the top 10 most statistically dominant QBs in NCAA history. Cody Hodges, who turned out to be a "bust", still through for only 4200 yards.

Graham Harrell was a serious recruit sought by big time programs -- something Leach hasn't had in his tenure at Tech. He's going to do fine.

I'm happy with a 25 ranking. With a game vs. TCU early in the season, Tech has the opportunity to bump themselves up significantly early on.

Texas/Ohio State
Eh, the pollsters got it wrong right off the bat.  The Longhorns should be #1 based on the National Title and the quality of the team returning.

Look forward to our meeting in Austin!

Titanic, tectonic or all you could wish for
The Ohio/Texas matchup will be a one of the best games of the season because Ohio is returning a very good, experienced offence to challenge the Texas Defense which is returning most of it's key players. The fact both teams are intact when Ohio has the ball should make for some high quality football.

The Texas offense and the Ohio Defense have both lost key players. It's hard to say now if Texas losing it's team leader and most important player on offence will be offset by the loss of so many staters on the Ohio defense. The execution by both teams when Texas has the ball might be ragged that early in the season. It will be a good measuring stick for how far each program has gotten in rebuilding.

TCU
If the Horned Frogs can by Tech at home, (which I think will be a very good game.  Is it wrong for me to be excited about a Tech/TCU game?) then the Sept. 30 game at Utah could be for a BCS berth.  With the new rules this year, it's difficult to imagine a team from a non-BCS league not making it into one of the bowls.

Clash of the Titans
I wonder how often the #1 and #2 have met this early in the season.

If Texas wins it could(someone should check) be the first time in a few decades that they've been #1 during the actual season.
I'm betting not since Akers was the coach did Texas have a midseason #1 ranking.

Food for thought.

Didn't we leap USC for one week last year?

I was thinking the same thing
but I believe it was the BCS that put us #1.

It wasn't the AP or coaches poll.

VT: got that right
PB, do you live in VA? Because the Hokie fans don't seem to cross the Potomac much, at least not after work hours. One of many reasons that when we bail on the city, we're staying in DC...

Oh yeah, and Beamer-ball is over-rated. At some point you've got to score some damn points, and with no QB as such this year, the Defense isn't going to be able to carry VT. Hope not anyway.

I'm in Georgetown/Glover Park
So I'm reasonably sheltered from the Hokies, but they infiltrate the District from time to time, to my great annoyance. And they'll litter the sports talk radio airwaves... why do I listen?

by Peter Bean on Aug 4, 2006 1:52 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

That's why I have an iPod
There's nothing good about DC radio. Nothing.

And it makes sense that you see them as that's a part of town that people want to go to... I'm nearer the Chevy Chase DMZ so we don't get casual Virginian visitors.

BTW I meant that if / when we bail on DC it will be to MD. Not really firing on all cylinders after noon on a Friday... not really firing on all cylinders period.

Florida State
at number 10?  This is a team that went 7-5 last year and lost a boat load of talent to the NFL.  Overrated if you ask me.

I didn't really follow them until quite recently.  If thats over 5 years, then thats pretty bad.  If its more like 8 years, then thats not as damning.

VA Tech
You know, I can understand taking cheap shots at a school and its fans if you're rooting for a loser - it's frustrating, you lash out.  But when you root for the national champions?  That's just classless, and fairly pathetic.  Hey, sorry you've met some who you didn't like, but generalizing the rest of us?  To quote Cameron Frye, you sir, are an asshole.

You, sir, need to lighten up
If I got offended every time someone took a cheap shot at Texas fans, I'd be a sad, lonely man.

Don't worry Cal fan
You'll be Top 10 after Week One.

OU will surely drop out of the Top 10 now that they've been Bomared.

FSU will finally demolish Miami, post-suspensions, dropping the 'Canes below Cal.

Cal just needs to prove themselves by taking care of business at Tennessee.
