Stop, Already

You may have seen the recent SI cover celebrating Ohio State's victory in Austin. No? You didn't see it? A little salt for the burnt orange wound:

I was there. It sucked. I've moved on.

The Ohio State loss may be behind me, but I can't help but continue to be bothered by the never-ending comparisons between Vince Young and Troy Smith. SI college football writer Austin Murphy, unable to write a feature story without being grandiose, contributed to the irrelevancy in his own way:

Whenever he was asked last week to compare himself with Young, Smith would flinch almost imperceptibly, then answer by not answering. "He's a great guy, but I play for a totally different team," he said on one occasion. "He's six-six, I'm six-one," he said on another, inadvertently spotting the former Longhorn an extra inch.

Smith dodged the question because there was no upside in answering it truthfully, in saying something along the lines of: I'm better at getting through my progressions. And when I do release the ball, I have a more fluid motion and throw a better, more accurate deep ball--make that a more accurate ball, period--than he ever will.

Or, Austin, perhaps Troy Smith was saying what he meant; namely, "We're entirely different quarterbacks that have run entirely different offenses."

At its base, this is just the latest example of the lazy, unintentionally racist journalism that pops up with any, and every, African American quarterback. People don't compare Steve Young and Brett Favre like they do Troy Smith and Vince Young, and yet each set of quarterbacks are equally far apart in style and ability. In large part, this only happens because they're black.

We see this manifested in analyses of black quarterbacks in other ways, too. Recently, fed up with the same tired, ignorant question about his speed, the Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Byron Leftwich finally shot back, "I'm not a slow quarterback. I'm just the slowest black quarterback in the NFL." There's a big difference, of course, and it makes no sense to use race as the filter for judgment.

I don't think it's the worst sin in the world, and I'm not here to go all Scoop Jackson on ya. It's just not that big a deal. But it's lazy, and tired, and worst of all, a blatantly bad comparison.

If you absolutely must compare black quarterbacks,  start with Donovan McNabb for Troy Smith, a man who -can- use his feet and get around, but is a pure passer that simply uses his feet to buy time... in order to pass. He'll run if he has to, but that's it.

And Vince? Try Randall Cunningham, a man who was, like Vince, much more of a dual threat weapon - Cunninham amassed nearly 5,000 yards and 35 TD rushing the football.

Just quit comparing Troy Smith and Vince Young, okay? They're both black, competitive, and play quarterback. Other than that, they really ought not be compared. Even if their universities play one another.

And one final word for Smith as he preps for the NFL Draft. Have fun with the Wonderlic... the story's already been written about you. They're just waiting to plug in your name.

Just a round of applause
This needed to be said and I'm glad someone with a larger forum said it.  You are absolutely correct and I hope we can just drop this comparison once and for all.

Have fun with the Wonderlic...
Great closing line PB, major kudos for this post.

get used to it...
Sorry kids, but one of the drawbacks of having one of the most amazing hear-inhuman quarterbacks in college football means EVERYONE is going to get compared to him for quite some time. Mize well buckle up and get used to it. Troy isn't the only one I've heard compared to VY this year, just the one who gets it most often because he also ran all over Michigan. Take it is a complement, and be happy peeps finally noticed VY skills. (remember some morons still wondering if VY could pass before the NC game?)

really?
I don't hear them comparing Brady Quinn or Brian Brohm to VY.

by Kool Hand on Sep 21, 2006 7:56 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

yes, really
I heard it last weekend about Oregeon's quarterback. Yes, Oregon's. (not sure of ethnicity...) and I expect to keep hearing it. Face it, Vince made people talk about college football. You want more ratings, start the comparisons.

As for Brady Quinn, he's in a league by himself. I mean unlike Vince, he WON the Heismann this year. (Don't take that the wrong way either, that's more media bashing.)

Look, I'm not saying its correct or appropriate, I'm saying there are lots of lazy sportscasters/writers out there. Not everyone watching the games is into college football as much as those here, so they can slip this kind of crap past them. Again, how on God's earth could anyone say Vince couldn't throw by the end of last year? Easy, don't watch the games, just read what other writers have to say and repeat that.

Alright, now we've hit on a sore spot of mine.  to be brief: If you don't like it, STOP PAYING ATTENTION TO THESE TOOLS. The shockcasting, the ES-SPIN and the regurgitated stories, it's all worthless. There's much more valuable info and interesting discussion at places like BON. But if you follow the mainstream outlets, don't be surprised or upset about material pandering to the lowest common denominator.

African American
Oregon's QB is African American, for the record.

SI Cover
I did see that cover, and while it was a bit of a burn, I felt better after seeing this:

"great closing line"?
...someone not stinging from their beatdown might call it a dick move. There might be some point during this season when OSU might PLAN to feature Troy's running ability IF NECESSARY, but that's probably waiting for a defense that makes it NECESSARY...sorry the 'Horns D wasn't up to the job. Shut up about hypothetical Wonderlics already, unless you want to bet Troy's is better than Vince's...

I get the point...
I just interpreted the "Wonderlic" line as a dig at Troy (as did bendj, it would seem). Having read your post again, I'll concede that it wasn't, but rather another facet of the lazy reporting you're talking about; it was maybe just a little clumsy and the subtlety was lost on me my first time reading it.

I didnt...
Don't put words in my mouth boss.  Anyone who attempts to sublimate a loss by taking a dig at the intelligence of the starting QB is a jackass (ahem...boifromtroy..ahem), and my comments have nothing to do with Troy Smith's ability on an intelligence test.

Takers on what?
You did miss the point.  He never said that Troy wasn't good.  In fact, if you'll read the site he is #1 on the list for the "Maxwell Pundit Award" for good reason.

The point of the article was to point out that Troy and Vince are completely different QB's with completely different skill sets.  They both happen to be black, therefore the lazy comparisons.  As he said, it's tired.  We're tired.  It's completely condescending to us as readers.  Do they think that we can't see for ourselves what these two offer to college football?

OK, lets take bias and level of skill out of it.  Brady Quinn and Eric Ainge.  Have they ever been compared?  No.  Because they are completely different players with different skill sets.  They play in different offenses in different media outlets.  The surrounding talent is different, therefore utilizing a different style of play.  Vince had young receivers and didn't throw as often as he would have had he had receivers like Ginn and Gonzo'.  That, and NO ONE was picking up the zone read play.  Why go away from what doesn't work - Are you reading Greg Davis?!

UT lost to OSU.  We get it.  We also understand that they are a better team.  Be a little classy in victory.  Not everything is a knock on your Buckeyes.

Hoom 'em. 'Nuff said.

"Classy"?
What is this obsession with "class" at this site...and what, exactly, do you mean by it? Am I supposed to start each comment "Sirs"? I've just responded that I was a little off-base with my first comment, but having read and thought about it again, I don't know what's allegedly classless...maybe "sorry the 'Horns D wasn't up to the job"? But, see, while that's maybe a little pissy (and also 100% accurate), it's not insulting, or gratuitous, etc...

Also: "If you read the site"...I do every day, for about 3 months now, and I think it's fantastic; I wish we had a blog as good as this one.

Classy comment
Is not necessarily directed at you.  Although you haven't exactly exhibited that friendly banter that I refer to.  Class: read Son of Jorel's comments below.  That's class.  What you and a few other Buckeye fans are on here for is to pick, degrade, or bash UT fans apparently for being UT fans.

OK, congradulations.  You re-read the post and understood what the original context of the post was about.  But my post was posted prior to your admittance of that fact.  Had you posted before, I would have just let it go.  So don't act like I'm lashing out at you after you so gracefully admitted that you misunderstood.

Hoom 'em. 'Nuff said.

This is getting a little silly, but...
I've never bashed or degraded anybody here. You're supposed to be UT fans; I'm supposed to be a Buckeye fan. One of the joys of college football is that it allows us to be dicks sometimes, even if we regret it later. Still, y'all have some fairly high standards ("troll"? please...).
For what it's worth, I think you've got a fine football team there

I wish.....
Vince would've come back for this season b/c if he had we would've put up a 50 spot, easily, and we wouldn't be having to discuss this topic. but we lost to a better team at the time.....i used up all my wishes anyway...thanks Oregon!!!!

Stay classy tOSU!

Buck 4 Life
Great post and interesting topic. It is a shame that people wanna generalize and give stereotypical praises and comparison, but you have to remember that journalism is a business first and the goal is always to sell mags/papers/web hits and if trying to identify Troy Smith with one of the most spectacular QBS in CFB history, than the media will do it.  Remember Mike Vick and how everybody was compared to him, Daunte Culpepper, Steve Mcnair, or even Donovan McNabb...Hell I remember when Kordell Stewart was always the defining image for athletic qb converted to w/o...

But don't hate Buck fans for the aggressive tones.  We're good people up here, its just when that Scarlet comes out we turn into rabid lunatics....... Good luck the rest of the season boys and I'll be rooting for you guys in the Big12 championship game.......Too talented to not dominate the rest of the season....
