Shut. Up.

In the wake of Boise State's dramatic victory over Oklahoma, all that the stupid pundits can talk about is "Cinderella" Boise State beating the "Mighty Oklahoma." Over and over and over, it's "David" taking out Goliath. Mark May has now said three times how Boise State "played above their heads" to, in the words of the studio host, "pull the greatest upset in the history of college bowls."

The only pundit making any sense at all is - of all people - Lou Holtz, who's simply reiterating that Boise is just a talented, well-prepared team.

And that's right. Boise whipped Oregon State, and four other bowl teams. They're a damn good team, and instead of talking about this Fiesta Bowl like it was some one-in-a-million event, we probably ought to be asking, "Should Boise State have an opportunity to play Ohio State?"

probably
the most exciting finish in a college bowl game I have ever seen. The back and forth in the last few minutes is unmatched and those gutsy calls were "oh shit" material. I don't know how I feel about that on-air proposal. I think Ian Johnson would have probably gotten crazy street cred after a win like that and should have taken advantage of the free agent market if you know what I mean.

by joey on Jan 2, 2007 12:31 AM CST   0 recs

lol
That's a tough choice for any college guy. Wonder what those two are doing right now...

Unfortunately for him
he's probably in a press conference waiting to get his chance to celebrate both his victories properly.

I was surprised OU was favored by so much
Was it their win over Nebraska?  Because I thought OU was relatively mediocre all year.  I thought these teams were going to be pretty evenly matched coming in.

by BrooklynHorn on Jan 2, 2007 12:31 AM CST   0 recs

To be fair
Yeah, they were saying that David and Goliath crap, but several different on-air types suggested Boise get a shot at Ohio State. I like it when the broadcasters talk about how great a playoff would be, but it sucks too, because I don't think games like this get us any closer to having one.

by hornbone on Jan 2, 2007 12:36 AM CST   0 recs

Jeez
Too bad Boise State isnt in a BCS conference, or it would be like West Virginia of last year.  Oh well, some stupid ass AP pollsters from the west coast will give a few first place nods to Boise State in the preseason, then all of that useless hype can start.
Hey Boise State fans, no pictures of crying OU kids on your fanblog ok?

Whoa whoa whoa... GUYS!
one thing we're overlooking here is that Stoops has lost three straight BCS games.  And all three have been pretty embarrassing.  Well maybe not the LSU game, but the Orange Bowl and this one will sting for a while.

by the other Andrew on Jan 2, 2007 12:40 AM CST   0 recs

True dat
And I'm such a dork I always look at teams' histories, and I would love for OU's overall bowl win/loss record to dip some more.

by hornbone on Jan 2, 2007 12:42 AM CST to parent up   0 recs

Sting?
Shit man, I predict Oklahoma plays like a crippled dog the entire 2007 season, and we DESTROY them in the Shootout this year.  As glad as I am that OU got dickslapped in such an unceremonious fashion by some Idahoans, I can only shudder at the thought of something like that ever happening to Texas.  I would be, in a word, inconsolable.

I found myself thinking "what would we be saying if we were in OU's position" several times this game.  Yikes.

Yeah
It would leave us for 9 months of knowing that we had just blown our third game in a row, if we played them and actually lost.

If we had gone to the Fiesta...
This might be sacrelige but i have to say it....

I have a feeling Boise would have kicked the crap out of us.  That was a prepared, unhinged Boise State team that played OU.

Akina would have been outmatched for sure.  But then again i bring up 2 points.

  1. OU doesnt normally lose when they score 42 points.  Just like we said we shouldnt have lost in the K State game.
  2. It was also a turnover happy game for both teams but BS wins that by one as well.
Just thoughts, please dont ban me for saying this.

Same here
I would have been very worried had we played them.....

by Hornbud on Jan 2, 2007 5:21 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

Legit question
Boise's offense would have given our defense fits.

COuld we have scored enough to win?

Hard to say that we would have...  Would have been a shootout.

You got that right PB
... and you know how vulnerable we were to the trick play.  And those were two of the best I've ever seen.  We would have been toast.

Big Game Bob
won most of those big games with John Blake's players.  Blake is a terrible head coach but a legendary recruiter (just hired away from Nebraska by Butch Davis at UNC).

He's been taking a beating in big games the last few years.

by billyzane on Jan 2, 2007 12:47 AM CST to parent up   0 recs

a contributing factor
to all this cinderella talk is that Boise effectively ran nothing but trick plays in overtime (plus the last TD in regulation).  That's a strong indicator that a team doesn't think it can win straight-up (see K-State v. Texas).

But lost in that is the fact that Boise DOMINATED most of the game.  It wasn't even close.  It was OU that needed the gifts and miracles to get back into the game.  And Boise did it playing OU straight up.  They're a solid team, no question.

I'm just glad it was OU and not us.

by billyzane on Jan 2, 2007 12:41 AM CST   0 recs

Man!
I was disappointed sitting in the Cotton Bowl today second half and this game put a smile back on my face.  Was it me or can you see these Boise State guys driving beat up pickups, slamming Natural Ice, and jamming Jackal on their Jensen sound systems as they represent the latest tatts from skin-o-rama.  PB this really was a huge game.  Little white stoners against State-Of-Texas traitors that went to OU.  I loved every minute of it and this game gets my vote for best college football game of the season, hands down.

But hey, what do I know!?

Amazing
I would kill Mack if we lost like that. Ian's girl is fine fine fine. I would be skeeting on her face all the time. Wow but she was shocked that he proposed and i don't think she wanted to marry him but how embarrasing would it be to get rejected on national TV so she said yes. The game that loss is devastating for OU where are the fire "Big Game Bob" sites if that happened to us devastation would be happening in Austin i think Mack would have been run out of town i don't know if they would have beaten us but i don't want to find out because they are good. But still OU almost always gets every break in every game the fumbled punt how many pass interferences do they get the worst throw ever that would been up there in collapses but the "Pontiac Game changing performance" was the hook and ladder what a play and what a well coached team that is. How you like that now Bob? Hookem horns were coming for you next year get ready to be blown out we ain't Boise St. were better.

Agree with PB...media hype
All through the regular season of college football we are told to focus on one thing...rankings.  Yet now we get to this game and we are told it is David vs. Goliath?  No it's not.  It's #7 vs. #9.  If we go by the almighty rankings then this was supposed to be a competitive, close game and that is exactly what we got.  The media is doing a disservice to Boise with the David vs. Goliath comments.  They are the real deal and worthy of their ranking.  They would probably be the #1 or #2 best team in the Big 12 this year.  I think they are probably a #8-#12 type team.  I don't see them beating the Ohio State, USC, Michigan, LSU's of the world though.  ou is a #12-#16 type team.  Hats off to the Broncs!

Chris Peterson
Popped up on my radar about 5 years ago thanks to someone at Hornfans.  We missed a very very very good opportunity to snag him while he was still their OC.  This game was as close as I thought it would be, the only thing I didn't expect was that BS would play OU straight up for 99% of the game, and be highly successful.  However, I honestly did expect OU to pull it off in the end, owing to their "superior" athleticism and depth and possibly a gadget play from side show bob.  I was actually a little dissappointed in side show's lack of creativity.  Did he expect to just roll over them?

by Hornbud on Jan 2, 2007 8:07 AM CST   0 recs

if they don't get Saban
Texas fan living in Birmingham...

If Saban pulls a Rich Rodriquez and leaves 'Bama at the alter (again), they are starting to mention Chris Peterson as a candidate here.

With the way they're throwing money around in Tuscaloosa these days, that man might have made a REAL killing last night.

by beast in bama on Jan 2, 2007 3:14 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

RE:
CP would be an outstanding fit for 'Bama.  I think he'd actually fit in with the country boys down there, much much more so than Leach.

If 'Bama winds up with Saban (a move, for the life of me I can't figure out) that leaves Miami shooting for him.  I honestly think that CP would do more for either institution than "I can't figure out what I want" Saban.

by Hornbud on Jan 2, 2007 3:33 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

Great win..
BSU is the better team..Texas would have their hands full too. I think Stoops didnt prepare his team for how physical BSU would be. Perhaps he was so cocky, he didnt prepare them at all?

by bachelorette on Jan 2, 2007 8:07 AM CST   0 recs

Good point.
I think the same thing has happened to alot of teams this Bowl season.

by lalonghorn on Jan 2, 2007 8:58 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

What a great win
This year there just seems to be more parity accross the conferences than ever before. Unbelievable given that Boise doesn't get the top recruits and I would guess that their football budget pales compared to the Elite schools. Which brings up a question-are we (the Elite schools) really getting the bang for our buck??

In any case, what a game and what a win. What a way to end the season. Watching the Horns win in the Alamodome on Saturday and watching OU get beat in the Fiesta Bowl. Great way to end the old year and start a new one...

Two great points in Fiesta threads to revist...
over the long winters nap until Spring Drills:

  1.  The comments made about the BSU coach, and how he 'popped' up on our radar a few years back while he was still OC.  Instead of making excuses for why we are putting up with 'underachieving' and 'predictable' [and those are admissions from the Greg Davis supporters!!!] let's fire up that radar and find someone really cutting edge like a Norm Chow type.

  2.  Even the talking heads were able to decipher that what BSU has accomplished with non-5 star talent is impressive.  It just begs the question about what should UT be able to do with the kinds of talent we have here every year, even if they aren't all breakout talents like Ricky, or Vince, they should be properly motivated and be perenial contenders.

Discuss amongst yourselves...

by longhornJ on Jan 2, 2007 1:59 PM CST   0 recs

Does every fucking thread
have to begin and end with a Greg Davis comment.

We get it, you dont like him, you want him fired.  Nothing can happen to ever disuade of that.  Now, move on.

by chief on Jan 2, 2007 3:42 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

I'm fine with Opinions
it is just the manner in which they express them.  We could have a thread on water polo and it will end in a GD hatefest.

by Wells on Jan 2, 2007 4:30 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

I have it
on good authority that GD sucks at Water Polo.  However, I couldn't think of anyone else that I'd rather have has a Badmiton partner.

by Hornbud on Jan 2, 2007 5:20 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

I will when he does...
and that "f"ing thread didn't even mention Greg Davis until halfway thru...underachievment applies to many aspects of our game, and thus the hairs breadth win against a .500 team in our own backyard.

And for the record, I'd be perfectly happy with a Greg Davis that re-invented himself and was confident enough in his players not to spoon feed plays to them which are easily deciphered by opposing teams Def Coords.  He IS brillant at times, so what's wrong with wanting more excellence and less mediocrity from our personnel?

Simah' down now Wells, we're on the same side here, we don't need a Brazos replacement stirrin' the soup.

by longhornJ on Jan 2, 2007 4:24 PM CST to parent up   0 recs

I couldn't help myself
I was actually on the fence at the beginning of this game.  Sure OU sucks, but to have them lose would the make the Big 12 look even worse.  Byt, every time they showed that constipated look on Stoops' face, I got a little giddier.  To have them come all the way back THEN lose in OT, that's just icing.  Reminded me of the year that they lost to KSU in the Big 12 championship.  If OU won, we go to the BCS, but it was too much fun watching the wildcats pound them.

By the way, the blush is really off of Stoops' rose, huh?  A few years ago, he was a certified genius and the greatest coach in foorball.  Anybody saying that now.  Just imagine if instead of winning all those games in a row against us, we split them.  I think his seat might be getting a little warm in Norman.

by SaintBevo on Jan 2, 2007 8:02 PM CST   0 recs

Agreed
As much as an OU beating pleases me its not looking good for the Big 12 conference in the bowls right now.

So far OK State, TX Tech, and our beloved Longhorns have pulled out victories in the bowls so far.

Not going to make the Big 12 Conference strength talk very good next year.  Especially with the Big East coming on like they did this year.
