Preview: Texas at Nebraska
Rick Barnes' Longhorns (13-5, 3-1) conclude a three game road trip tonight as they visit Lincoln, Nebraska to take on the Cornhuskers (12-5, 1-2). The 'Horns are reeling from back-to-back tough losses on the road - a triple overtime heartbreaker in Stillwater to Oklahoma State and an uninspiring egg laid against Villanova in Philadelphia.
Neither loss can be considered a "bad" one, as both the Cowboys and Wildcats are RPI Top 25 teams, but the manner in which Texas dropped its game in Philadelphia has both Rick Barnes and fans of the team questioning whether this team is going to be able to take that next step forward.
There aren't too many "must win" games in the NCAA basketball regular season, what with teams having so many opportunities - plus their conference tournaments - to prove themselves worthy to the postseason Selection Committee, but this is as close to one as you're likely to find. Should Texas lose to the Huskers tonight, they'll have dropped all their true road games but one of their true road games this season and would find themselves the losers of three straight games.
Scouting the Huskers
Nebraska hasn't won a single game outside Lincoln this season, but are a perfect 12-0 9-0 at home for the year. The good news is that the Huskers haven't beat a single opponent in the RPI Top 60 yet this season.
The Huskers feature three players who score in double figures per game - Aleks Maric, Ryan Anderson, and Jamel White. It's Maric, a 6-11 junior center, who's most critical to Nebraska's offense. Averaging 18 points and 7.5 boards per game, the Huskers try to run everything through him. Using advanced metrics, we see just how vital Maric is to the Huskers' offensive attack. That's not an encouraging sign for Texas, who's suffered when teams have excelled at interior offense.
The biggest challenge for Texas, then, will be finding ways to get quality minutes out of their post players. It's unlikely Atchley's big or long enough to manage Maric in the low post, and Texas probably doesn't want to waste all of Kevin Durant's energy defending the interior. Could that mean, then, that we get our first look at a Dexter Pittman-heavy gameplan? Barnes did say, following the Villanova loss, that it was something he's thinking about, and really, I can't think of a better game in which to try him out. Pittman would, at the very least, provide a physical presence for Maric to have to bang with. Even if Barnes could "steal" 15 minutes from Pittman, it would probably be worth it.
The Horns are a far more athletic team than the Huskers, and more efficient on offense. Winning the game will come down to forcing things away from Maric and into the hands of less talented players away from the basket. Is there anyone better than Pittman for achieving that goal?
The alternative - Matt Hill - may get a shot early in the game, especially since he'll be playing in a homecoming game. But Hill's not shown any ability to play big time college basketball yet; it would be unwise for Rick to count on Hill making much of a contribution.
It's anyone's guess how Texas will fare after the lackluster effort we saw against Villanova, but you can bet that Rick Barnes will have explained, in no uncertain terms, how badly this team needs to win in Lincoln tonight. I expect Texas to crash the rebounding glass with unprecedented ferocity, and put forth their best defensive effort of the season. I doubt this game will get in to too much of an uptempo running game, so my best guess is that we're in a race to 70. Texas gets there first, and wins, 75-69.
The Wednesday, Jan. 24 Texas-Nebraska game is being produced by Fox Sports Net Midwest.
If you are a satellite television subscriber, the Texas-Nebraska game will be carried in all Texas markets on the Fox Sports Net Southwest alternate channel (DirecTV Ch. 667 and Dish Network Ch. 448).

what is the bloody deal
I live in the basketball hell that is Minnesota. I have Dish Network. I have all Fox sports channels. Can I watch much Big 12 basketball?
Hell No!
In this age of televised everything everywhere, where is the rationality behind this contractual rule?

Preview: Baylor at Texas
Tonight the team faces an even more formidable challenge, as the Lady Bears come to town with a #13 ranking. This is a tough team to figure out, though, given that they lost to a Purdue team Texas beat (55-69) and then beat a very tough LSU team (64-60). Baylor has also lost 2 of their last 3 games (OU, aTm) and struggled to beat a mediocre KSU team at home. However, you know what they say about poking a stick at a wounded bear...
This team - and in particular, this coach (Kim Mulkey) - has given Coach Conradt and the Horns fits for the past several seasons, and swept Texas last season. However, this is a very different squad from the one that won the National Championship two years ago. Gone are top scoring threats Sophia Young and Abiola Wabara. This team now relies on Florida transfer Bernice Mosby and guards Angela Tisdale and Jessica Morrow. They are the only Baylor players averaging in double figures.
Expect Tiffany Jackson to draw the assignment to shut down Mosby, while the Royal-esque Earnesia Bailey will likely get the 5'5" Tisdale and Brittainey Raven will be on the taller Morrow. E-Bay is a tenacious defender, and has shown the ability to shut down players much taller than her, so if either of the guards gets a hot hand, E-Bay will likely switch to her. She is by far the biggest surprise of this team. The only parallel I can think of would be if Craig Winder ended up making the starting lineup and scoring in double-figures in every game. E-Bay also gets an amazing share of the rebounds in our game, considering she's only 5'9".
Texas is 25-4 in home games against Baylor, but they will need another performance like this past Sunday's clamp-down on the Aggies to get the win tonight. Raven and E-Bay will have to stay out of foul trouble, and Tiffany will need to be as productive as in the aTm game (9 of 12) rather than as ice-cold as the ISU game (3 of 19). Coach Mulkey knows Tiffany's tendencies better than she does, though, so you can bet she'll have defensive schemes drawn up to shut her down. The Texas guards need to make Baylor pay for that focus in order for us to pull off the upset.

Well I was wrong
In spite of the officials' incompetence, Texas still had a chance to tie the game with a minute left, but our star player, Tiffany Jackson, missed a point-blank shot to cap off an ugly 3-for-11 and 7 rebound night. On the other hand, Baylor star Bernice Mosby dropped in 11-for-18 and ended up with 23 points, regularly schooling Tiffany and anyone else who attempted to defend her in the paint. The WNBA scouts in attendance got a clear picture of which player has a professional career ahead of them, and she wasn't wearing burnt orange. Poor officiating aside, this loss must clearly be laid at Tiffany's feet. Even a mediocre shooting night would have been enough to give us the win. Score: F
Following close behind on the Ugly Scale was PG Carla Cortijo, who had an uncharacteristic 8 turnovers against 4 assists. She regularly tried to pass around, or took shots against, players who were at least 6 inches taller. Score: D
The final failing grade goes to Earnesia Williams, who was 3-for-12 and 0-1 on a critical 1-and-1 at the end of the game that would have pulled us within two. Her two 3-pointers and 4 steals are the only reason I give her a higher score than Carla. Score: D+
Two standout performances tonight kept this game close. E-Bay was once again a defensive menace, and was Texas' top scorer with 16 points, 6 from the charity stripe. She also had as many rebounds as Tiff. Score: A- for the 3 TO'
The second standout was reserve Niqky Hughes, who managed 11 points and 5 rebounds in only 12 minutes. Score: A for effort
These two players played with passion and energy, while the rest of the team seemed listless and tentative - particularly Brittainey Raven, who only scored 2 points tonight after a breakout game against the Aggies. Score: C-, only because she played so few minutes
Murderer's Row continues this Saturday in Lubbock, where Texas has struggled for years, followed by the invasion of the Land Thieves in a week. Texas can only hope this probably 3-game losing streak is followed by a 3-game win streak (K-State, OSU, Kansas), but as I said in the Murderer's Row diary I am pessimistic.
The officiating situation is just depressing to me as a WBB fan. DeLoss Dodd and Chris Plonsky were both in attendance in courtside seats. I'm not sure how much influence the AD's and coaches have over which crews are assigned to Texas games, but I hope we never see any of these six again.
Thank god the men pulled out a win, and the Aggies lost to Tech, or I might have considered throwing myself off the roof of the Doubletree...

Lots of random shifts.
To me the enigma is James, he can do some things like rebound and block shots but is less effective in man defense on the low blocks. Maybe it will come with practice, game play and experience. Another thing, how could he be such a high scorer in HS, he has hands like rocks?
