Title Game Thoughts (I Miss Vince Young)

I thought I'd be more enthused about tonight's national title game. While I'll be watching intently, it'll be a lot more casually, than, say: this. Man it's fun to read that stuff all over again.

While I don't have too much of a rooting interest in tonight's game, it's the last college football game of the season, and a big one at that. The matchup's pretty intriguing, too. Consider this your brief viewing guide for tonight's matchup, with some thougths of my own, plus links to those who are covering this thing properly.

First, make sure you take a close look at Sunday Morning Quarterback's coverage of the big game. He's got it all covered, as usual. One of the many reasons I won't attempt a full preview of this puppy. Competing with SMQ on matters like these is a fool's errand. (I probably should have done an Under The Hood for this one, but I'm too swamped with work. Apologies.)

So, quick thoughts and a few questions.

First, do you care about this game? Some of you are already talking it out.

Second, who do you think will win?

Personally, I'm rooting for a good game; there's nothing as disappointing as an uncompetitive championship game. Even as a diehard Steelers fan, I was let down by the lousiness of the Super Bowl itself last February. Clearly, we won't get a game as exciting as last year's Rose Bowl, but something dramatic would be nice. Urban Meyer choking the game away in the final seconds would be especially gratfiying.

I think the most interesting storyline in the game is Troy Smith, really. My Dad sort of clarified this thought for me, but he's right: Troy Smith has really, really grown into himself. And not just as a player - as a person, too. He's articulate about his past mistakes, thoughtful, genuinely more mature than he used to be... almost worth rooting for, really. I have no affinity for Jim Tressel or Ohio State, but Smith's actually a compelling character.

But as a player, too, Smith's the key. He's just been nails in every big game this season (and most of last) - how he plays tonight will determine the Buckeye's fate. Florida will field the best defense Ohio State's faced by a sizable margin, so the Buckeyes probably can't win this thing without Smith stepping up and being The Man.

On the flipside, I've got my doubts about the Florida offense. Despite Urban Meyer's theoretical offensive genius, this has been a subpar unit all season. They've feasted on great defense, though against decidedly underwhelming competition. Ohio State's bringing an offensive balance and firepower the Gators have not seen all year - that means Florida, in all likelihood, will need points. Are they up for it?

In the end, that leaves me thinking back to our September showdown against Ohio State, when I thought our superior defense would be enough to counterbalance Ohio State's decisive offensive edge. Similarly, prior to the Michigan game, I thought Michigan's superior defense would be enough to overcome their inferior offense. Wrong again.

Here we are now today, and Ohio State's got a superior offense. Should I bet against them once more?

I think not. I'll take the Buckeyes to win the national championship, 31-23.

OSU, 42-20
The SEC is overrated.
Vince Young wins football games.

I love this site
I am a Buckeyes fan but I started visiting this site right last year before the Rose Bowl, and then rekindled it before the OSU v Texas game in September.  Visit it all the time since then.  I wish OSU and Texas would rematch again in 8-10 years, I have a lot of respect for the Longhorn program and Mack Brown.

Always good sports discussion and always good points and counterpoints, on this site.

Here's hoping PB is right.  OSU victory tonight, I hope!

Go Bucks!

38-21 tOSU
I'm pulling for Florida, because when I don't have anything staked in a game I'll always root for the underdog. But I think the Buckeyes are just a bit too good to not win this year.

Plus they did come down to Austin and beat us, so they're definitely for real. Let OSU enjoy their championship and let's  start gearing up to take it away from them next year.

Tressel's post-game speech
"This is a great day in Buckeye history, but pales in comparison to the day that set these events in motion, gave us a national title, and little Troy Smith a Heisman trophy---the day Vince Young announced he was leaving early for the NFL."

Drops mic and points to the sky.  "Thank you lord"

Exactly
The biggest addition that any school made this year was the subtraction of Vince Young from college football. Hands down.

I'm taking the Gators too
It's a stretch, but I think the fact that OSU hasn't played in so long will almost feel like the first game of the season.

If Florida can force a turnover or two from Smith and the running game, I think the Gators pull of a close one.

The problem with this prediction is that Leak and Tebow could be turnover machines themselves.
Also, there isn't a single team in the SEC that passes the ball like tOSU (very much a running conference this year).
If Smith gets in a flow it could be a snoozer.

I guess I'm taking Florida, because I believe in Urban and karma. tOSU won the MNC last time, because of a terrible interference call that never should have been. In a close game look for karma to collect payment for the favor.
Meyer will be prepared to run the ball all day on the Buckeyes.

I hate sounding like I believe in this stuff
but I always struggle with issues like karma in college football games.  In this case, I'd say that rather than karma biting a team like OSU in the ass, the football gods seem always to reward the same annoying teams over and over, and OSU is one of those teams that gets a lot of breaks.  From that perspective, I'd say they're a lock tonight.

If you want to play the supernatural card, the bigger issue to me is the collision of two well-known, but opposing certainties in college football playing out tonight.  One is that some teams are destined and scripted to win when its "their year," and this is certainly OSU's year (preseason #1, defeating #2 twice, heisman winner, etc.).  In those situations, its lunacy to bet against a team like that.  The other is that whenever a team has a HUGE layoff, like almost 2 months, everyone always seems so surprised when they come out and lay a huge egg.  To bet in favor of such a team is lunacy.

Which will win out tonight?

The rust factor IMO
is huge.

Florida was really hitting it's stride and found a running game by the end of season. They've played two games since OSU played Mich.

Also, Florida will be healthy for the first time all year.

Both of these factors are in Florida's favor. OSU is probably the better team, but it doesn't mean they show up tonight.

Everyone is saying Troy has that VY look of a champion who can't be denied. But has Troy really been challenged like Vince had ben? How many tough come-from-behind wins has Troy engineered?
I can't remember any.
IMO he has the look of a guy very confident after steam rolling every single opponent.
Maybe it is his weakness.

We forgot about
the other supernatural storyline: Super stud in high school, takes a few turns for the worse in college (in the Disney movie we can have him as a druggie/steroid abuser/alcoholic wife-beater/whatever), loses the coach that recruited him but gains the father figure he needs, can't get it right, but then, when the chips are REALLY on the line, pulls it off.

Question
Would you rather have a season like UT had this year (Colt-frosh of year, Alamo Bowl, promising future, stud recruits, etc)?

or

Would you like to have the season tOSU has had this year, if say Vince had returned (all the pieces in place, healthy senior defense, senior QB, run the table, ranked #1 entire season, etc)?
**BUT - you lose the title game to Florida

Essentially, would it be easier as a fan to enjoy the season Texas had or would you rather run the table with a senior QB and lose in the MNC game?

I look at how ND fans are grasping at straws and searching for any hope or ray of light to the future after their window of opportunity for glory (or even a consolation) has been slammed shut -- and I wonder if that is harder to take than a mediocre Alamo bowl run with a promising future.

Huh?
"if say Vince had returned ....
**BUT - you lose the title game to Florida"

Vince returning and losing to Florida (or anybody for that matter)?  I don't get it.  I think it would be easier to understand the concept of the football bat than to register losing with Vince as a 5th year Senior.

But let's just say that he got into a freak accident during the Big XXII championship game and shows up with his right leg and half a left leg...you know, for arguments sake.  I'd still like to lose a closely fought national game for all the marbles against an comparitavely equal foe.  We'd still have the conference trophy, and the players could go out on a huge high.

I guess the hypothetical
needs an ammendment.
Pretend you are OSU, back to the promised land, Heisman QB, loaded roster -- but you lose the big game.

That would be quite a tease. tSOU fans were ready for mass suicide when they lost in Columbus to Texas last year. They must be thinking that this Fiesta game, just like the Texas game, is all but a formality.
I can't imagine the devistation the Buckeye nation will be feeling if they fall tonight.
The stars were aligned, but the astroligist read them wrong.
A season to remember AND forget.

You could make the argument that Miami and OU haven't fully recovered from return disappointments.

I'd rather
be in the national championship game every year and lose half of them then be in the national championship every once in a while and win every time we're there.

Why?  Because being in the national championship game every year means you went undefeated or only lost once during the year.  You're still beating OU and a&m and winning conference championships.

Plus
we'd have been treated to 13 more games of watching Vince tear up defenses in a burnt orange uniform.  That alone is worth just about anything.

I just can't see
the Gators scoring more than 3 touchdowns against Ohio's D.

I'm with PB.

everyone thinks OSU is a lock...
so I'll go Florida straight up.

Ohio State is pretty good, but not THAT good.
score: 20-17

OSU 31 Florida 14

I'm rooting for OSU on this one because i cant stand to think of Urban Meyer and Florida winning the title with all the shameless whining he did before the final standings were announced.  Either your team deserves it or not, the coach should keep his mouth shut about it.
  1. The coaches pay benefits from going to the title game with bonuses and such so there is bias.
  2. His performance evaluation when it comes contract extension time will also benefit.
Any effort to propel your team and promote your team is automatically cheapened by the previous 2 points.

Isn't that his job?
I have no problem with a coach pushing his team, it is what we pay them the big bucks for.

Which push......?
The shameless push to the media, or the weekly push on the practice field, weight room and Film room?
