Also, There Is This

Oh, one other thing, which will be fun to talk about tomorrow: a lot of teams in front of Texas lost on Saturday. It may have taken awhile for Texas to get going on Saturday, but win we did. And with that, check out who in front of Texas in the BCS Standings lost on Saturday:

#8 Virginia Tech
#10 South Florida
#11 Florida
#12 Southern Cal
#14 Kentucky
#15 Virginia
#16 South Carolina

And with that, I'll note that I'm going to bed happy tonight. Wins are wins. Congrats to the 'Horns on an exciting come from behind win against Nebraska this afternoon. Onward and upward.

Nice!

Is it outrageous to say that we could be #13-14 in the human polls? That probably means about #16-17 in BCS overall rank.

I bet our computer scores will remain at zero for all 6 computers.

USC and Va Tech won't drop below Texas
... given that they lost to higher-ranked teams in close games.

South Florida may drop all the way out of the poll, given that voters were sceptical already. Florida, Kentucky, Virginia and South Carolina should all drop past us, but Georgia will likely jump us with our ugly win being compared to their domination of Florida.

So that's a net +4 for Texas in the BCS to #13, on the edge of BCS qualification. But that's entering our toughest 3-game stretch of the season. Texas has a heckuva lot to prove to move up that critical final spot in the standings - no one more than Greg Davis.

USC

has almost exactly the same resume as Texas.  Absolutely no impressive wins, 1 good loss, one bad loss.  USC's loss at home to Stanford is worse than Texas' loss at home to K-State, but USC gets an extra bump from having performed better against a common opponent (Nebraska).

Pretty much exactly the same.

Well I was wrong on one poll

Texas does pass USC, and lands all the way up at #12 in the Coaches Poll.

Coaches Poll

Big XII looking good - OU #5 (Oregon jumps them), KU #8, MU #9, Texas #12.

Texas wasn't the biggest gainer though. Georgia vaults all the way from 19 to 10 with their "upset" of Florida.

Up to #14 in AP

... and behind USC, as I expected.

Georgia gets lots of love, vaulting from #20 to #10. A bit over-rated at this spot, if you ask me.

OU, KU and MU at 5 8 and 9, just as in the Coaches poll.

Also there is THIS

The Gazelles continued their demolition derby in conference play, swatting aside Colorado in Boulder 30-27, 30-19, 30-28. This could easily have been a trap game for Texas, coming off the emotional sweep of #1 Nebraska last week at Gregory. But Texas showed the benefit of their balanced attack, with Juliann, Destinee, Ashley and Pao all recording double-digit kills - and Juliann and Ashley both logging yet another double-double.

This is truly a team on the roll. There is not another challenging game for this team until they face KSU in the last game of the season - and that's at Gregory, over a team they beat 3-2 in Manhattan earlier this fall. Win out, and the Horns share the Big XII title, and make a legitimate bid for a #1 sead in the post-season.

And given USC's upset of #3 Stanford it's possible - though highly unlikely - that Texas will move up to #4 in the polls, right where they started.

Remaining Schedule

10/31  Oklahoma in Austin  Last game: Horns sweep in Norman

11/02  Florida A&M in Austin  Essentially a scrimmage to fill the bye weekend

11/07  Kansas in Lawrence  Last game: Horns sweep in Austin

11/09  Texas A&M in Austin  Last game: Horns sweep in B/CS

11/14  Texas Tech in Austin  Last game: Horns 3-1 in Lubbock

11/17  Baylor in Waco  Last game: Horns sweep in Austin

11/21  Iowa State in Ames  Last game: Horns sweep in Austin

11/24  Kansas State in Austin  Last game: Horns 3-2 in Manhattan

Win out and the Horns share the Big XII conference title, assuming the Huskers also win out. There is no post-season conference tournament in Volleyball, so the Horns have to count on solid wins over ranked B12 foes (NU, KSU, OU) to counter-act bad losses to Penn State (twice) and Nebraska.

Texas had a win at home against Nebraska as dominating as their loss in Lincoln. I also think Texas could easily handle Penn State at this point in the season, with the development of Pao and Juliann and the better team chemistry. Perhaps we'll get a chance at revenge in the Final Four. For some reason the NCAA Seeding Committee has never been friendly to Texas (sending Stanford to our regional last year, and Hawai'i the year before), so let's hope they think we've paid our dues and seed us appropriately this year. A trip to Florida (the weakest of the four host schools) would be the perfect early Christmas present.

Even with those losses, I'd take

#11, #12, #14, and #16 if put head-to-head with texas.

I think all four of them should be ranked ahead of texas.

Struggling to beat a pathetic Nebraska team is unimpressive.

I'm still not seeing the issues with your defense being addressed.

no one's necessarily claiming

that Texas would beat any of these teams head-to-head.  if that's the way we ranked teams, Stanford should be ranked ahead of USC because they proved that they would win a head-to-head matchup.

it's about who's had a better season, and all 3 of those SEC teams have 3 losses.  now, number of losses isn't dispositive of the order teams should be ranked, but it's go to play a part.  Texas is at least in the conversation with them.

I do not understand why everyone is happy.

Longhorns have won three conference games and those were to possibly the three worst teams in the conference.  We didn't even have Baylor locked up until the fourth quarter.  We came dangerously close to losing to a Nebraska team who has quit on their coach.

All of you can talk about how we could be 13 or whatever, but the truth of the matter is that we haven't played and beaten anyone worth anything.  If you think about other Big 12 teams (save OU) if they had our schedule and record, they wouldn't be ranked.  It is our name that is carrying us and, if you are honest with yourselves, that is an empty victory.

by YouDontKnowMe on Oct 28, 2007 8:58 AM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Errrr....empty victory?

How many teams wish they were 7-2 at this point in the season?

Victories are what they are...great accomplishments.

Give the team and coaches credit for not quiting.  Give Nebraska credit for not rolling over because they came in with a lot to prove and a lot of emotion.

Both teams played their hearts out, left it all on the field, and gave us great drama and entertainment.  Let's all feel good about the win and look forward to another Longhorn football game next week.

So what you are saying is.....

that because I graduated from Texas A&M and consider myself an Aggie, I could never possibly also be a longhorn fan?

I didn't realize that to be a longhorn fan you had to have attended the University of Texas and only the University of Texas.

I guess everyone on this board all attended UT?  Stupid mentality.

You're a weird longhorn fan

if one at all.

Growing up, I only fed Jared Norton paper. That's why he eats plays.

by Horn Brain on Oct 29, 2007 1:21 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

That's exactly what he's saying

You cannot be an Aggie and a Longhorn at the same time. That's akin to being a Communist and a capitalist at the same time. An acid and a base. Matter and anti-matter. An idiot and an intelligent person. Oh, sorry, that was the Aggie/Longhorn one again, you get the drift. Or maybe you don't, as you're an Aggie.

It has nothing to do with attending the school. It has to do with the core of your being.

So take that.

The rankings

discussion seems more and more incompehsible and meaningless by the week.  There is a case to be made that relative to other teams the Horns can plausibly be considered a top 15 team and ranked as such.  This would, however, speak more to the hideous lack of quality and pervasive and violent inconsitency throughout college football this year.

FWIW, billyzane is right that Texas resume is every bit as strong as USC and I'm willing to go with that.  Further the rankings do interest me as a diversion as fan of college football.

Ever since the KSU game, however, and more than ever after yesterday, I've been much less concerned with Texas ranking and more with the direction of the team which has been thorougly and very often insightfully discussed on this board.
