Open GameDay Thread: Oklahoma at Texas
This game means more than any other we'll play this season. Not only is it likely to define what happens from here on out - it's also Oklahoma.
And I hate Oklahoma. HATE.
And so do you.
This game flames the passions of Longhorn fans more than any other and we're all gonna be extremely fired up - win or lose. So, ground rules for today:
- If you want to be critical, you'd better find a reasonable way to do it. Excessive personal attacks on player or coaches aren't called for and will be moderated. Sorry, but we're not gonna allow this community to devolve into anarchy. Make your point without excessively bashing players or coaches as people.
- Treat each other with respect. If you don't like someone's point, feel free to respond. Just don't do so with a personal attack. Fans of this team come in a lot of flavors - if someone's point pisses you off, make a counter-point. Ad hominem attacks will be moderated.
- Keep the perspective. Win or lose, both the team and fans alike will have to get up tomorrow morning and look toward the rest of the season. Don't embarrass yourself today.
And with that, have fun. And root like hell for Texas.
For those of you who are offended by strong language... well, I apologize in advance for the picture after the jump. It's OU Hate Week, baby.
Hook 'Em Horns! BEAT OU!

It's raining steadily here in D
Should make for an interesting game.
I dont see any rain
i am a huge texas fan out here in Hawaii...one sports bar on maui, the rusty harpoon...ocean behind you and the horns in front of you...now that is living!

It's clear now
But the ground's still wet, and it's overcast. Forecast calls for more rain.
native texan
I bet the ground is saturated...i do not have a good feeling about this game.

We have the talent to win
Just no the coaching...

Thank You
Thanks, PB,for keeping it in perspective. I think some of us had our eyes off the prize, me included, this week on our posting.
Crying Boy II
ABC just showed another young OU fan crying after the Colorado loss and included the footage in their montage of top teams being upset.
Early games
KSU going down against KU
Miami going down against UNC
Wisconsin going down to Illinois
Damn. what a way to start an offense.
BTW I like the talking Bevo. I recommend he takes over Brett Musburger's duty any time he does a Texas game.
I hate this O-line
What the hell is up with our offense!

Vondrell
This is my my first post on here, but I just wanted to say that I hope Vondrell gets some PT today. I just happened to attend the same high school as him (along with Malcolm Kelly, too), and am pretty sure he will do some good things.

Wow.
A good play by Beasley sticking the reciever almost immediately on 3rd down.
A good play by Foster on the punt coverage
A good play by Palmer on the pass to Kelly.
Has hell frozen over?

loving the D so far
i would have liked to have seen that first play bootleg on O, lets see if they go back to it. Optimism is higher than I thought it would after 2 OU offensive series.
I concur
Very proud of Palmer's play so far!

Damn it
Colt can't recognize a simple corner blitz? That pinched nerve KSU gave him last year gave him brain damage.
When they send BOTH safeties
We have to have a hot read in the middle.
They pulled back an LB to help cover Sweed, but Colt just has to get rid of it.
hey
every once in a while could one of you guys post the time in the game at which you're posting?
it helps those of us who aren't actually watching the game to figure out what your reacting to.
Corn Nation - Graduating more of our players than you are!

no way
we just need to make scheme adjustments
one on one deep isnt working for us
we're going to have to use our safeties more
that score didn't come off bad plays
we just need to adjust the defense
we have a good game plan going
that's why they had to change away from the run
no we need to adjust more for the deep ball
Secondary
We can't leave these guys on an island all day. We will get burned burned burned.
We killing the run but giving up the pass
as a result. ON the deep ball to the goal, they also had a receiver open on a crossing route. No deep safeties, one trailing the crossing pattern.
I like stopping the run but you gotta get to Bradford if you make that commitment.
Guys, don't worry,
those passes long passes are damn near impossible to defend. The touchdown pass? Great call. It happens. Honestly, how many of you guys though that the score would only be 7-0 at the end of the first quarter?
yes, it was a cheapshot.
if i were tony hills i wouldve just been ejected for beating the hell out of the guy that hit mccoy.
O-line?
How about getting in that guys face O-line? Man up and get your QB's back!!
Completely agree and
Did you hear Colt talking about his leadership before the game, he just sounded scared for some reason, do these guys really rally behind him?
Those f****in okies are just as dipshit as aggies
Didn't hear the whistle? F-that. That's Stoops-ball. I hope it bites them in the ass.
I'll forgive him...
because he doesn't have a TV in front of him (I don't think). Anyone watching the replay could see that the ref was 4 feet away from the defender blowing his head off on his whistle. There is ZERO excuse for that, and it should have been an automatic ejection. The fact that it wasn't should mean this crew is fired the moment they walk off the field.
I'm more pissed that the guys in the booth didn't point out this obvious fact. They pushed back at Maguire, but not enough.

http://radio.woai.com/main.html has the game live with craig and keith... in case anyone needed it.
Hit shot
There wasn't even a penality! What the Hell!

Yeah, Big Tex
is there to sell corny dogs. I wonder if ABC had to pay a licensing fee for the voice over?
Offense, punts again.
Better than a turnover, and we are punting well, but we have to get the third and two's.
We're going to have to go play-action
to pass comfortably. Our O line can't give him the time, so the Horns must run and pass from that. That's the hard facts on the ground.
First Quarter On the Fly
Offense:
O Line: B-. Decent run blocking and fair protection on passing downs.
Running game: B. Penalties are putting us in the hole here. I think Charles can break a big one.
Passing: D. Where are the receivers? Colt's reads are miserable. He doesn't match up to Bradford.
Coaching: B+. I like the play selection.
Defense:
D Line: B+. There're doing all you can ask.
Linebackers: A-. Best part of the game so far; they are stuffing runs. Nice showing by Norton, Muckleroy, and even Bobino before his ankle got him.
Secondary: C-. After some early hope, they just don't have the size and speed to match up with OU receivers in the schemes they're being given. Safety help is marginal; is Jackson on the field?
Coaching: C. Need some creative blitzes, even on 1st down.
Special teams: A. Great punting and punt coverage.
Still have hope.
Dear Lord, how long have we been waiting for that
Finley, 55 yards.
That's Vintage Colt
The touch pass to Finley, and the shifting over to the left, with the great lob play to Ship.
I love it when a kicker makes a good tackle
It's like when a pitcher hits a homerun.
SACK!!!!
there you go! Great pressure that time
Where was..
this fucking defense against K-State
minus that one drive, they've been incredible. murray and patrick havnt done shit.

Orakpo has made a couple fine plays so far.
Good to see the big guy back.
Hey, there was holding on that third down play but they didn't call it. You could see the hold spinning the Texas player around on the backside. That's a good sign the D-line is starting to dominate.
let's open up that playbook
like the first two series
we got a touchdown
but please let's not go in a shell
i don't care about our record
if we play this way
with these play calls
and with this intensity and smartness the rest of the season
it'll be a fun season
we're playing like a good team today
This is where Texas Needs the Killer Instinct
Last week, in the third quarter, we had control of the game, and we got lax on offense, allowing K State to take over on special teams.
Mack. Go for the Killshot.
Win or lose...
I'm excited to see our team play hard, and what can you say about Mack blasting the ref! About time! I think that's going to help keep this team going this game.
by HookeminOKC on Oct 6, 2007 3:36 PM CDT reply actions
Orakpo = the difference
We may have a chance if Rak keeps kickin ass
Finleyyyyyyyyyyy what we've been ordering
someone's been peeking at BON.
JMike's doing...
what Malcolm Kelly had been doing.
I love the play calling
This has been there for a long time.
J Finley
Thats my man way to show up baby.
by longhorn4life on Oct 6, 2007 3:41 PM CDT reply actions
About time we have a TE
It seems like decades since we had david thomas. Finley is definetly better than thomas already. Keep giving him the ball.
Lets just hope we have could kickoff coverage.

God YES!!!
Where has this team been all season.
by RemiMagnus on Oct 6, 2007 3:43 PM CDT reply actions
Call me Effn Crazy, but had Greg Davis managed to
Exploit a defense's weakness? OU's linebackers can't cover J Fin and he has milked that for 134 yards in one half!
Is it snowing?
What the fuck
Who the fuck is our specials team coordinator. Every fucking time i have to hold my breath during a kickoff. What the fuck. I am sick of this shit.
by longhorn4life on Oct 6, 2007 3:45 PM CDT reply actions
Special Team, what the hell Mac Duff?
How can we be playing so good and have this happen? Just kick it out of bounds and let OU have it at the 35!
Getting nasty out there
which is exactly the way it should be. Can the okies take it as well as they were dishing earlier?
we have to get to bradford
he has way too much time. needs to feel the turf a few times
Our D is tired
Notice the hands on the hips. Heat and humidity. I'm sure the okies are feeling it on their D, too.
Alright Foster
Good coverage. Can't afford to get beat by the deep ball all game
coaches need to manage this game better
too much confusion...leads to stupid mistakes
yes
yes he did. They should have known he would passed on that one. Where was the coverage.
by RemiMagnus on Oct 6, 2007 3:55 PM CDT up reply actions
Penalties
are the difference in the game so far. UT has 5 - OU has only fucking 2. Should be 3 with the free hit on Colt.
Are you kidding me??
A draw play??

Why does the ref
smile everytime he's calling something

and kindle comes in and makes the stop.
The writing is on the wall.
by mmoore02 on Oct 6, 2007 4:07 PM CDT up reply actions
It would be nice if we had timeouts right now..
Might be able to get a field goal shot if we hold here.. but we pissed away all three timeouts...
nice stop
by imissderrickjohnson on Oct 6, 2007 4:06 PM CDT reply actions
I don't like that OU has established the run
by HookeminOKC on Oct 6, 2007 4:06 PM CDT reply actions
a return would be great here...
by imissderrickjohnson on Oct 6, 2007 4:08 PM CDT reply actions
Huh?
Not that it matters, but if that was the ruling we were just really close to completely losing the momentum.
by mmoore02 on Oct 6, 2007 4:11 PM CDT up reply actions
Special Teams Strikes Again
I think I remember us bringing in a coach from the San Francisco 49ers, who was supposedly a great special teams mind... what was his name?
not having timeouts at the
end of the half is just stupid.
NO shit
McCoy gets flattened 4 feet from a ref blowing a whistle, NO Flag. The kicker flops after barley being touch draws a flag. That was the same ref.
Some dubious decisions by officials
- Late hit on McCoy (lack of call makes it clear this isn't NFL). A questionable late hit on Bradford by E.Jones WAS called to extend a drive for OU.
- Several holds HAVE been called against OU, but a lot more have been overlooked.
- Running in to the kicker at the end of the half. UT player barely brushed kicker...followed by a beautiful flop.
perhaps...
we should have rick barnes manage our timeouts. then we wouldve managed to have 4 timeouts left.
Great first half...
I knew they could do it... now they just need to keep it up for 30 more minutes.
TEXAS FIIGHT!!!
We've had five hot games
so we should be acclimated as much as we can be. The humidity looks horrible. It's the O line I'm concerned about, but they played a ton down in Florida where there were comparable heat and humidity. I think we can make it to the fourth quarter OK.
Tough for both teams, but if football has been anything through its history, it is an endurance contest. That's the factor that separates the men from the boys in the long run.
Game on the fly - halftime
Offense:
O Line: B+. Great 2nd quarter; Colt had time and they weren't the problem with the running game.
Running: C. I still think Charles has a chance to break one. Went vanilla in the 2nd quarter, but with passing success, that was OK. Slip in Chiles some more!
Passing: A. Colt woke up, but great play calls helped. If OU's safeties and LB's adjust to the middle in the second half, our WR's might have some success on intermediate routes.
Coaching: A-. Nice scheme. Let's see some run creativity.
Defense:
D Line: A-. Doing all you could ask. Great pressure from the young DE's, and there is no running up the middle.
Linebackers: C+. Echo the comments on Derry; get him out of there. They are our weak link today.
Secondary: B. Better 2nd quarter. Come of the pressure on Bradford is coming from coverage, I think.
Coaching: B. Schemes a little better, but will they out coach Stoops and Heipel in the 2nd half?
Special teams: B. Punt coverage excellent, but kickoffs make me verrrrry nervous.
Officiating: FFF. Where did these idiots come from?
Competetive 1st half. The longer we lead or stay close, the more the pressure is on OU. The Horns season could turn on this half.
at the game....
i am guessing PB is at the game, i know i would be if i still lived in texas.
probably not getting a 2nd half thread.
Statement time.
A score on the half's opening drive? Sounds good to me.
Lets take this thing by the horns.
by mmoore02 on Oct 6, 2007 4:33 PM CDT reply actions
Gotta...
Hang on to the ball. Put in McGee if Charles can't protect it. It cost us seven.
Their nathan vasher moment
